I made it to Tuscon, went out to the field, what a facility,, chose not to fly today after  driving, I will wait for tomorrow. Got my plane weighed, and registered,, so tomorrow I begin seeing how my plane likes the altitude..
Hey Shultzie, for the record people love your design!
On the down side, I did not see Powell, wonder where he is hiding, he probably knew I was going to show up so he bolted LOL
Don Mclave had a minor miscue apparantly as well,,

Mark,

Flew today and got some bugs worked out. I had to come back to the condo to fix some stuff. A little very minor surgery inside the rear hatch, tape the hingelines, fix some undiscovered crash damage (turns out one of the muffler bolts was busted - fixed) and did some very much needed bench trimming. Should be ready to roar tomorrow. After I got my flights in, watched the big guns fly and then headed back to do the work on the plane.

And Mark, I weighed mine too. I picked up a touch of weight in the repair. Came in on the scale at exactly 3lbs, 2oz. Not bad since I put an ounce and a half of lead in the nose.

Gerald,

All I heard was the Don had some problems. I didn't see him today. Guess we'll see tomorrow, but I did see The Ted flying that Ruffy. He looked pretty good.

Don got his pointer finger and thumb ( I recall) in the prop, it did some damage but nothing perminant. He was feeling emberassed as we all do when this happens... Not sure if he will be flying or not, its his right hand,, I think it will depend upon how bad it hurts tomorrow.
Randy, I will see you in the morning, I need to do some shake out stuff on mine, and I really want to have a couple glamour shots with our twins,,  8)

Well I lost my Madman today.  Got to the vertical eight and at the top of the third iteration the lines slacked a bit and when they got tension back something locked up in the control system and that was all she wrote.   Oh well! :'(  Now for the good news, the Humongous sparkey did very well for both myself and my good friend Stan Tyler.  Actually Stan did very well, I hope he got a decent score.  Haven't heard from him yet.  I got a decent score certainly in the range of what I flew.  It was funny many of the ignition flyer's were saying in the old days you just had to make it through the old time pattern to place well, not any more now you actually have to fly a good pattern.  The equipment, thanks to Don Hutchinson, is so much better now that everybody completes the pattern and good scores have to be earned.  Anyway two flights down and two to go for the Humongous, I got to keep the sparks flying.

I just talked to Don McClave.  He's OK.  He nicked an artery at the end of his finger, so it bled a lot, but damage was minimal.

Fun day. Got a lot of flights in and I've got most of the bugs worked out (if I can keep Gordy Delaney from saying "put in more nose weight" every flight). I'll get in a couple more tomorrow then live with what I have.

Mark looked really good. Got his engine really humming after the first, filter plugged flight.

Getting old is not for wimps!  ~>

I got in a moderately good flight with a really marginal engine run.  I am flying a Baby Clown with a PAW .061 diesel engine.  Haven't quite figured out how to set it on the ground to extract all the power in the air.  When it is "on" life is VERY good.  When not, you nurse it through.  Everyone thought it was going to die in some awkward place, but it hung in there.  Definitely a crowd pleaser!  HB~>

Had to leave before seeing my score as I needed to finish my Classic model!  And yes, it is done a WHOLE day ahead of time!  I may actually fly it before needing to make an official.  Wouldn't that be unique?  ~^

I had an interesting day. One sorta flight. I tried to pull a "Trostle" as I was told it is called. I hooked the lines up backwards. Ground the prop down to about a 6x4 and once again ground on the cowl and gear doors along with putting two holes in the bottom, cracking the paper on the bottom and breaking loose the head reast in the cockpit (vibration).

Maybe I'll just retire while I still have a plane.

 WHAT???!!!

Not good. I think I had even noticed color coded leadouts in the build photos.

I'd say it's time to park it until you get home for a proper repair. Just enjoy the weather and the rest of the contest.

Reading about "hookin line on bassaakward...brought memories flooding back to 1993!

Our 4 man duel line Choro kite team was in the staging area at the World Cup...A HUGE CROWD gathered at the board walk...THE WORLD BEST KITE TEAM was waiting for the music to start the routine..(this winning team had given many many performances ALL OVER THE WORLD to kite festivals all  summer long.)

THE HUGE SPEAKERS around the staging area STARTED THE MUSIC...AT THAT MOMENT ALL 6 KITES TOOK OFF THE GROUND HEADING TO THE TOP OF THE FLIGHT WINDOW...
SUDDENLY! ONE KITE IN THE MIDDLE WENT KRAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZEEEE..INTO WILD CIRCLES...SUDDENLY CIRCLED WRAPPING ITS LINES ALL  AROUND THE REST OF THE KITES--
-WHICH THEN  DRAGGED THE REST OF THE TEAM KITES--OUT OF THE SKY AND INTO THE SAND IN FRONT OF GOD-THE JUDGING STAFF-AND EVERY FAN WATCHING FROM THE BOARDWALK!
WHY???
THE LEAD MAN OF THE TEAM MEMBERS...HAD HOOKED HIS DUEL LINES UP BASSS-AKWARD!

Just maybe proving that no matter how skilled or well trained any flyer might be-----TO ERROR!! IS ALSO TO BE HUMAN? HB~> :! y1

Well, the old DOC is finally up and around after two days of travel and first day back at work, if you can call it that.  Took naps between sessions today.   Got to meet Mark Scarborough and his lovely daughter.  Also seen Randy Powell beautiful bird.   Both planes looked great sitting together on circle one during practice day.  Mark is well on his way to being a great flyer and congradulations on his I-Beam Award.  Too many people an so little time what with the family situation.   Great weather until the last day when the wind started picking up.  My self I sat and watched until the wife called to say keys were in the locked van.                 For those who haven't had the chance to meet Joe Dill yet, he is a class act!  I got to spend an evening with him his wife one night back in December.  I had one of his RSM Chipmonk kits for my dad for Christmas, and we spent the evening thumbing through it, and he shared the history behind it, and even autographed the kit and the plans. Very memorable night!  Also got to look at his BEAUTIFUL Crusader as well as a Ringmaster Imperial that he was building.  He had heart surgery last summer, and was working on fixing the Ringmaster up with a throttle so he could start flying again.  Saw him at both Tucson contests in January and February, as well as at VSC.  Really nice guy.

It flew very well, although Jim wisely omitted the Vertical Eights (telling the judges beforehand).  Other than that, it went very well.  Fox .29 power.  The model won the award for the Most Unusual Entry this year.

As many times as we've seen deBolt's ad's for this one, who would've ever believed this 1946-47 design could be made into a viable stunter?  Well, as he has demonstrated many times in the past, if anyone could do it, Jim Lee could.......and did!

Is the Wildcat wing even a built up wing?  Thats cool Jim was able to get so many maneuvers out of it.

Well it was fast and he kept the maneuvers big and open.   No 5 foot corners and he did a great job presenting it. H^^

Steve
The Super Wildcat wing in the kit is a big chunka leading edge and a small chunka trailing edge.  I built it up and sheeted back to where the leading edge would have been...   The fuselage is molded 3/32" instead of 1/4 " planking....
The pictures should help...
Thanks
Jim
