Author Topic: Hemstrought PT-19 Ready For Paint (Read 2585 times)

Here's the latest from the Buttafucco Stunt Works.

When I think the plane is perfect and ready for paint, I'll mix up some Brodak white primer and Sig polar grey, thin it down(a lot) and apply one light coat, just enough to cover it. At this point, its surprising how many minute flaws turn up. Flaws are then repaired and touched up with primer, and the plane will be set aside for a week or two to let the primer out gas and shrink up. I'll then wet sand with 600 paper, removing all the primer, but what has filled low spots. It should be then ready for paint (hopefully)

I'll post more pictures through out the paint and finish process.

Larry, are you using Polyspan and do you sand the primer off of that also?

I thought about that, but after winning best Mono-Cote job at the AMA convention for that plane, I decided to try something different.
I hear that silkspan and dope can be made to look pretty good.

No Milt, I have been using K&S Medium silkspan on all of my planes.

By the way, are you the Milt that I met in San Diego back in the late seventies? I think I bought an orange Sig Chipmunk from you.
We used to fly at Vacation Island with Charlie Johnson, Greg Hill and the San Diego combat posse.

It is amazing how many flaws show up when the primer is put on the plane. Still working on mine.

Looking GREAT Larry! You might just get the hang of finishing these models before long!

It takes me back to about 1966 when I built mine from a Midwest kit.

I am the same Milt. I remember Charlie Johnson. But, man I was trying so hard to convince everybody on this forum how young I am. That's all gone down the toilet now.

I have a Midwest kitted PT-19 that my father built in 1970 hanging in my spare bedroom. I also built one in 2005 that came out pretty cool. It flew great with a Johnson Stunt .33 until it got dorked from a ball link comming loose. It never flew the same after it was repaired, and now hangs in Warren Walker shop. I gotta find a way to get it home. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the PT-19 as my father and I built a real one together.

Oh, uh, Larry...the back half of the PT-19 fuselage is glued to the wall next to your (former) Still Stuka in Warren's shop. You hadn't heard that? Eric Rule & Antone think it looks pretty good there...

Larry, I would so much like to go for a hop in that PT-19. I have always thought if I ever learned to fly I would have one. Still have the kit plans of the Hemstraught PT-19 that Midwest kit many years ago.
