I just got a virus when I clicked a link from Ted's Email. I thought it was a picture link, but it was a virus.

This virus could be spreading from a computer that is not Ted´s. Virus often use an email from the email list in the infected computer.

I got that E-mail also but did not click on the link...it has no subject line so I did not click on the link.

I received the same email, but my computer blocked the link from opening, and informed me of the virus. I sent an informational email to the same address, tho I know Ted has another/different address also. Not sure which is current or most used, or whatever. My advise was to 86 AOL, because their security seems lacking.

To all of you who've received whatever this was (including Shareen), rest assured I didn't send it. Bob Kreuger over at SSW sent me a link to a malware remover program and I ran that today. It found and fixed 16 "issues". I'm not savvy enough to know whether that found the source or not. I understand it came from my old AOL address which I haven't used in years. Not sure why I kept it except all of a sudden they said it was free and ....well...how can one turn down anything "free" even if you never use it.

I apologize for having my name associated with anything like that and have no clue how it happened. Hopefully it has been taken care of.

I have now received a very similar looking e-m allegedly from Steve Wilk. "Have some fun with this interesting site...(+ the address)".

Well today was the third day it showed up in my spam mail. When I seen there was no subject matter I blew it away. I did that accidently when Ty sent me an E-mail and it came up on my spam mail.

Did you, by any chance, note the time it was sent? I'm trying to keep track of the success of the malware program Bob suggested for me.

Hi Ted, it has shown up twice on my e-mail. You are not alone though, one also came through from Thomas Wilks, I I notice them late afternoon. No damage, just technology gone bad. $:-\$

I got it severl times, but it has not appeared in the last couple days. 'don't remember the exact day it last occurred.

I got two from Ted and one from Steve. I set up a containment (linux does have it moments) and followed the link. It tries to set up a retrans of email turning your box into a background zombie. I'm not sure what else is does because I killed it when it started randomly trying to hack my user account. It's pretty nasty. As others have said, just delete the email.

If you received and opened the virus email, your address book may well be the next one used to distribute it, from your computer. These things can be malicious.

I recommend SpyBot and MalwareBytes, two freebies that can keep you out of trouble. Install the SpyBot resident called Tea Timer, which will watch your registry and intercept attempts to install software on your computer. It warns and gets your permission, constructs a "white list" for valid stuff.

A weak spot on any Windows computer is the Internet Explorer itself, it has some special software "objects" that are particularly vulnerable to hiding these critters. Again, Tea Timer can help keep you out of trouble plus it is best to keep your Windows software updated, a continuous process (!).

I use Firefox and recommend it over IE as a primary browser. I'm sure others can recommend other preferred alternates. Of course, you cannot uninstall IE as it is at the heart of the Windows desktop and user interface.

Once you get things cleaned, try deleting all your cookies, then go and visit ONLY your regular sites to reload just those cookies. Then set the browser to allow cookies, but discard them when you close the browser. Also, install Firefox add-ons NoScript and Adblock Plus.

Good luck on getting rid of your virus. SpyBot may find a worm or trojan your main firewall (say Norton) didn't catch and doesn't get rid of. If you can't get SpyBot to successfully fix it, contact Safer Networking (SpyBot's creator), read their procedures then get help. It may take a few days to fix it, but it you follow their instructions, there's a good chance of killing it. (Ask me how I know all this, and why I donated money to Safer Networking after they rescued me..)

I foolishly opened that email this morning - from Terry Fancher, no subject line, and a link to a supposed picture. When you try open the picture a message pops up, saying your computer has numerous virus infections and wanting to run a scan. The options are such that you cannot easily escape.. If you do and try to open your browser again, it does the same thing.

I rebooted and immediately ran Spybot which said I wasn't infected. After the reboot, Firefox opened normally and I don't seem to have a problem now. But I'm running some deep scans to make sure.

Anyway, this critter looks like it still has a firm grip on Ted's address book. I suspect that Safer Networking may have a fix, it's worth looking into, Ted.

GADS...JUST TO THINK THAT FOR SOME REASON...I TOO E MAILED TED a few photos that I posted here on STUNTHANGMAN' just yesterday and this MORNING!

Gosh, I had forgotten all about this thread. Well, lo and behold, an email showed up in my Inbox, and it was from "Terry Fancher", who I remember was actually "Ted Fancher". How neat, I thought, to get an email from one of my heros. It must be a bunch of new photos of his planes or activities.

There was no attachment, but a link in the body of the email. I clicked it, and Internet Explorer said it couldn't open the site. "Norton 360" popped up with a window telling me that it had blocked an "...attempt to attack my computer...", and then it dawned on me, that some 'digital smuck' had gotten his claws on Ted's Address Book.

Man, these people are a PITA. It would be great if these people could be charged and convicted, and then sentenced to 5 years of sanding filler coats!!

I've only been playing with pcs about 15 years and I still dont understand rhem very well. I always liked Kaspersky virus best, faster downloads and no crap ever not even hackers can get ya. doesnt let you oprn anything bad. but it is expensive Second and i think best overall is " microsoft secuity essentials

its free, gratis bueno!! a lot of you may know this,but some my not. this is for them. ted get some protection. nothing more annoying than grtting viruses from friends. by the way theres a nrw guy coming in now thatactually did work at dynamic models in vanuys 60-61 jim

I got it to. The simple fix is to change the password. That is how they get the account to send the stuff. Password change is the only way to fix this. Trust me I know.
