All,
Thanks to all the photographers for capturing the day. I put together a quick video just to remind everyone of the fun we have every year at this event. The comradery and support for everyone sometimes can't be captured in a photo or video. It is one of the highlights of the year for me and I'm looking forward to having a "Blast" or maybe a little more!
Tom
EDIT: Kenny Loggins Danger Zone(Top Gun) was the culprit. Lets hope this one gets by.

Very cool, some sharp looking planes there.
-
Looks like the copyright police don't like one of my songs. Normally there isn't an issue if you include in credits at the end. I'll rectify this evening.
Tom
-
Nothing like copy right police. Blocked at my end.
-
I hit the share arrow on the upper right and it seems to be playing on my end. Let me know if it's still blocked on anyone others end. The credits normally insert themselves in, for some reason the Jim Croce song didn't. I'll leave it alone if working, if not, I'll correct.

Tom, this is what I'm getting
-
I'm getting the same screen as Dane is getting. :'(
-
All I see is that good looking guy in the white hat then blocked. H^^ must be the other guy.... y1
-
I guess I was lucky I got to see it before they blocked the content. It was pretty neat.
-
I believe we are good to go! Making the video got me jazzed! #^
-
Nice piece of work. Thanks!!
-
Tom:
Nice work !
Jim Croce one of my favorites, too.
No doubt, the NITRO JUNKIES will be out in force...and we know who you are !
-
What a great video. I still remember meeting Larry Scarinzi at the 64 NATS at Grand Prairie NAS. And Tommy I'm still trying to remember when I first met him in racing and carrier. I also think I have met a few others along the way. Now if all goes well I will get to meet the gentleman from Sooner country(Oklahoma). Thanks for the video.
-
Wowee!! Thanks for taking the time to put that back up. Amazing video.
-
Thanks for the compliment guys.
Doc, if I ever hit the lottery, first thing I'll do is send a G5 down to pick you up for the Vintage combat festival. That's a guarantee!

Fun video! Refreshes some great memories for me.
I will definitely treasure getting to be with the East Coast Crazies and just for one day... being Andre Mingliano!
Sharon still chuckles when we start talking about that meal we ate after the event with the East Coast Crazies! Laughed 'till our sides hurt that night! Great times!
In all likelihood, I will be retiring June 2018, and on my "Must Do" list is to make the trek to New Joisey again to see all the guys. Be sure to tell Larry to stay healthy and I insist he continues in good health and live long enough so we can all get together again!
-
Andre, If you get here we will make time for some of our favorite junkfood delicacies. Ran out of time last year.
-
A winning combination : Gastro delights on Saturday followed by high Nitro on Sunday.

I just looked at the video again during my lunch break. A couple of pictures really are quite powerfull in how this event really brings out the best in everyone. The thumbnail picture of Frank and Paul starting the Killer. Their smiles tell the story.....The other is of Shawn helping Larry with his planes. He's a good kid and it's great to see the bridge of the generation gap at events like this.
Hopefully, some younger viewers stumble upon the video and get hooked on the thrilling flight of combat planes. Maybe I'll have to kick up the music with a little Eminem, etc. I'm sure you guys would love that!

I can still remember when I joined the Flying Eagles of KCK that there were two main types of planes flying, combat and rat racers. This was before paved circles.
-
Tom, I think it's fabulous that you put this together. My wife liked the picture of me with the Half Fast. It's a great time, great guys and it just makes the day not want to end. Shawn and I have missed flying this season. Once Shawn started work, he's had to do many weekends. I miss him on the days he's not home. Were always together and we equally enjoy the fun on that day. Were making it a POINT to get there this year. I'll be seeing you and hopefully all the others. Thanks again for a great job. Ken and Shawn

WOW. Only two weeks to go before we get a chance to wring these old kites out!!
-
One week away!!! #^
Getting my 36xBB dialed in per Blitz article circa 1964. I'm pumped!!
Tom
-
I would put my money on Scarinzi still flying faster. Anyway, I hope you take lots of pictures for this old guy that still can't find the field using Google. Besides Jersey is too far for a one day drive. H^^

Loved the video...I remember when...well let's say it was a long time ago...I remember when.
Thanks.

Advanced forecast looks great. With gas around $1.85 in these parts, consider coming out to this amazing one day gathering.
Guys, this is primarily a fun fly , but if the desire exists for a "gentleman's match ", that can be arranged.
Please see my post in the Combat section and try to make this one.
Scarinzi promises to have his unreal fleet.
The anticipated speeds are guaranteed to be quite impressive.
-
Thanks Tom, I think I have it located, at least a big open area behind some trees. Now if my benefactor will come through with my fortune. LL~ LL~

Nice video Tom, Thanks for sharing! Sure brings back some memories ...

Had my Hornet out this past Sunday for a test fly with my new power plant up front, McCoy 35 Red Head ⚡️Bolt. The old McCoy really ran strong using a passafire as a fuel tank and 10% nitro. The Hornet was really hairy on the hand launch by going inverted as soon as it was released and I was lucky to recover from it both times I flew it. Once in the air it really flew well and hit a top speed of 91mph. There was quite a flew spectators that got a charge out of the spectacle and the launcher survived. At the Vintage Fly In we will try to put up two Hornets in the air at the same time and up the NITRO n~

I was going to attend the vintage combat fly in but due to family obligations ( Grand Daughters christening) I can't make it. I was looking forward to attending the event and I built a couple of planes over the winter, since I can't go I'll post a picture of my combat fleet which consist of a Super Whipsaw, Scrapper, Super Voodoo, and a Scrambler. Hope all have a great time. Dennis Ps. hope picture post
-
Dennis :
I had heard that you were building my Scrambler design and I'm honored.
Hope to see at a future event . Good luck !

Oh, way out east in this favored land, the silk will be shining bright,
The combat guys are playing there, and combat hearts are light;
And over there they're laughing, and over there they shout,
But there is no joy in Soonerville — the mighty Andre must sit this one out.

Andre, well there is hope in the Tulsa get together. The old Suburban was having cooling problems and when I went to take it in for inspection the break system went out on me.
-
Great video thanks for sharing
-
Thank's Sparky!
We had a small warm up tonight. Got 3 old dogs in the air. 2 more to ready. Just 4 days to go!

Great forecast for tomorrow in NJ.

Finished the Lancer. It's ready to go for tomorrow!

This years winner of the Larry Scarinzi Speed Challenge at the Vintage Combat Plane Fly-in was Al Ferraro with his 36X powered Super Satan. 127MPH. A new record! Here's a picture of Larry presenting the award to Al.
-
Way to go Al! Super looking Super Satan!
Hope you all had fun.
-
Back in the day I was trying for 100+ pulling a streamer. Way to go and congrats on the win.

The aches and pains will fade away but the smiles and memories will last!
We had a perfect weather day and a good turnout for yesterdays Vintage Combat Plane Fun Fly. The atmosphere was very laid back and everyone got to fly as much as they wanted to. All of the action took place on one circle at the legendary GSCB field. We don't keep records but it seemed like there was greater diversity in the types of aircraft that flew this year compared to past years. Among the 'never seen before' planes were a Berkely Lancer, two Hornets, Count Clipper and something Ken Cook had that I can't remember the name of. Other notable planes were two WOW's, two Half-Fast's, a Ringmaster, Up-N-Atom, Combat Cat and several Voodoo's. I have probably forgotten a few. Since many of us are disciples of LS there was no shortage of his planes in the air! No fewer than four Killers, three Super Satans and a Blitz were wrung out. Although most of the powerplants came from Fort Smith there were also two McCoy .35's, an OS .35S, five ST .35's and my G-15 powered Jr. Satan. I didn't get a speed timing on that one but, on 52' lines it certainly had me wishing it would run out of gas sooner than it did! It also handled very well. The Fox representation was excellent as almost all of the Combat Special series motors were either flown or on the field. This would cover the range from the 1957 CS right through the 36x BB. The Brian Gardner ABC engines made a good showing with at least four of them in the air including Al Ferraro's 127mph Super Satan!
We were all a bit disappointed that Jim Vigani's Double Diamond was not able to challenge Al's run due to a loose elevator. Next year Jim!! Another letdown was not getting to see Roy Glen's new Sneeker/ .36x ABC get properly thrashed. The maiden flight revealed a bit of a warp so he wisely decided to fix it first. A similar case was JimVigani's Lancer. He did a beautiful job on it and powered it with a nice 36x but the maiden voyage revealed a modest but noticeable warp so he also did the 'mature' thing and decided to take it home to the lab for trimming.
The speed challenge was informal as well. Anyone who held their plane down and level got a watch, or several watches, on them. Here's the rundown; Al Ferraro Super Satan 36x BBABC APC 8x8 40% 127mph
T. Schaefer Voodoo 36x BBABC APC 8x9 50% 122.4
T. Luciano Super Satan 36x BBABC APC 8x8 ? 119
F. Imbriaco Scrambler 36x BBABC ? 117.5
A. Ferraro Hornet McCoy .35 Tornado 8x8 10% 93.5
T. Schaefer Killer Fox Rocket .40 TF 9x7 93
J. Vigani Up-N-Atom 36x APC 8x7 91.25
E. Evon Hornet OS 35S 9x7 76.75
This has been a super fun event for 4 years now and we hope to keep it going as long as there is interest. Since it is difficult to fly this type of plane at many fields we are really grateful to Tom Hampshire and the GSCB for hosting and providing the perfect venue. The Fun Fly is a fabulous opportunity to come out and fly or just watch/listen/smell these hot rods of 50 years ago do their best to screw a 50 year older pilot right into the ground!! Till next year, C.T. Schaefer

The Toms( Schaefer and Hampshire) came up with this event four years ago and it has rapidly become a participant and fan favorite. Just for the record, we had entries from control line stunt , carrier, racing, scale and sport flyer types along with a few serious R/C pilots in the mix .
The performance of these 50 year old engines and aircraft is phenomenal; to say nothing of the gray haired guys who pilot them. It was especially gratifying to see young Sean " Lefty" Cook from Philly come out and enjoy the same aircraft we did when we were his age. He puts on quite a show !
I'll fill in the blanks about my entry.
My Scrambler design circa 1971, 35% Nitro 20% oil (blend), 8X8 APC. The Fox 36xBB a recent refuge from eBay. Long neglected, stiff, stained and gummed up from long ago combat wars or sport flying ;whichever I'll never know.
Following a nice crock pot bath, a new ball bearing and a Brian Gardner P/L/R, she acts as though she's discovered the fountain of youth. No other mods.

Guys,
I only got 2.5 flights of footage out of the day. I know others were taping as well. They are more than welcome to send me their footage or post themselves. Also, any stills send my way. I'll make a 5 minute video of stills to post. t_Luciano at comcast dot net.
Thanks,
Tom

I want to show off the beautiful engraved trophy Jim Vigani made. Having it presented to me by Larry Scarinzi made it all the more special. Larry was and still is my childhood idol (I'm still a child at heart).
My Fox 36x BB was really singing, inhaling all that Nitro, pulling the Satan to 127MPH y1, I still can't believe how much power that engine makes (I heard the Duke was smiling). This event is one that I really enjoy attending. Seeing all the different vintage combat models and engines performing like back in the day! Nowhere else will you see a variety of McCoy, Fox, Torpedo, Tigre, and OS engines in action!
Tom, nice recap of the day.
Andre, wish you made it, maybe next.
Thanks, Doc.
