Title: Video needed of someone doing overhead 8
Post by: Paul Taylor on April 05, 2007, 10:08:16 AM
Anyone know of a web video of someone doing an overhead 8. I would like to see more of the pilot then the plane.

Someone once told me that the magic happens in the center of the circle.

Thanks
Paul

Paul;

Go to "Getting All Amped Up" under "Interesting".  There is a video of an electric indoor doing the whole "Pattern" It may be what you are looking for.  Happy hunting.

"Somewhere", in cyberspace, there's a video of Paul Walker doing the pattern at the World.
Anyone have the location?

Question: Does everyone do the overheads (let's see if can explain this!) while their body is facing the "pull-up"?  ie: facing the point to where you go vertical then turning as you exit the maneuver?

When I begin the "Pull Up" as you call it, the plane is at my left shoulder. The only reason I have for this is that for me it is easier to follow through with the entire maneuver. I know it sounds odd but it works for me. remember I don't fly compitition so some things will be a little unorthodox. I am also right handed and fly with the handle in my left hand for the same reason.

No...Rolland McDOnald used to turn and do the 8 facing downwind instead of upwind.  He taught a couple of guys here to do it that way as well.  Helps them not fly it "in front of them" as the judges say.

I've tried it that way a few times but can't seem to get the inside/outside on the right side LOL!!

Somewhere there is some video of Paul walker doing the manuevers--watching him.  It is enlightening.  I've learned WAY more watching the pilots than watching the planes.

Hi Curt, I always watch the "good guys" at least one time each, just studying their body movements, hand positions and movements, and such instead of watching the plane.  It DOES have a very positive benefit for me!  Of course when you're around the Chrysler "number series" weight (that might be the reason Derek named me "Big Bear"! LOL!!), there ain't a LOT of guys with my body type out there!

Oh, yeah, are you gotta suck it up and come to Huntersville for the BOBFG Combat "Death Match"??  I gotta know if I am going to build a plane for it or not! LOL!!

OK so shoot me already, it works for me and my father flew the same way, worked for him to. There is more than one way to skin the old kitty.

I've got one of Paul Walker that shows him in closeup doing the overhead 8 - just his torso, arms, and hands - very enlightening.

It is a 3MB file so I don't know if Sparky will let me post it or not.  I'll ask him if I can and where it should be - then I'll let you know.

Hey Paul,

Check out the Aeromaniacs site.  Heman Lee has some great videos on it.
My favorite is the Meet and Meat 2003 video.  It has a bunch of close-ups of the pilots.

Hi Bill:

I'm gonna try hard to make it down this fall.  I'll definitely bring the Combat SL planes.  I actually flew and got my first cuts last fall.  Had Pat and Ivan McKenzie pit for me--go figure.  What a hoot!
