Title: VHS Tape player - Anyone still have one?
Post by: Paul Taylor on October 11, 2017, 02:14:39 PM
I'm asking for a little help. I'm in need of a VHS player - does not even have to be able to record. Just play tapes without eating them.
I have 4 office boxes of Windy CL tapes I would like to share with the stunt community but my VCR is at a hunger stage where it's starting to eat tapes. 😒

Let me know if you have one laying around collecting dust.

Thanks
Paul

You can still buy them.

Hammlecker-Smekleburgers (or something like that) still sells the Toshiba for around $500.

Check out the Goodwill stores, pawn shops, yard sales and resale places. They are still out there. If I can scrounge one up I'll let you know.
  Type at you later,

Did y'all know that if you take a long streamer of VHS tape and tie it to your plane, if you fly it at near dusk, it develops a corona along its length and glows blue in the dim light. I expect a good dry winter day might be best, but I have yet to experiment. I'd like to try one about 50 or 100 feet long. Or maybe just unload a whole spool behind it to see how many spirals I can get before I cut it.

Downstairs connected to a a CRT-type TV we have an old combo DVD/VCR player.  Not even sure they still sell DVDs these days.

Our club meets at a nearby EAA building and they have a small DVD player (which I think we own).  If I look hard enough, I'm sure I still have a bunch of floppy disks laying around.

I've been known to cut reed valves out of floppy disk material.

Not to get sidetracked on the original topic but I found the Mylar reeds to be great!!

The semi-oval mylar reeds from Bernie and Matt have been my best performers, especially for the plastic slip-on cup type retainer. They work with the circlip spring retainer too if you make sure it's free to rotate around to whatever position it likes. They will eventually get misshapen, sort of dome shaped, after a while, so they don't last forever, but that's why you buy them in quantity. They seem to be the fastest moving of all the different materials.

I have not tried the star shaped mylars.

The original copper beryllium star reeds were shaped for their foot tabs to be trapped under the edge of the circlip, but none of the new star reeds are made that way. If you flatten an old style one's foot tabs it may not work well or at all.

The Teflon ones suck.

In my opinion, the steel ones are slower cycling due to their mass, and will beat any anodizing off of the face of their seat. For non-anodized seats with slip-on retainers they are good for sport use and not high rpms. They may(not 100% sure) be a little thick for circlips resulting in restricted motion. I've seen them become domed too.

The clear stiff plastic backing to medicinal Lidoderm pain patches looks like a good material to cut oval reeds from. The floppy disk reeds I think are too flimsy, but they'll work in a pinch.

Tape rewinders are cheaper and cost less in postage. Lots on eBay.

Rusty:

Who are Bernie and Matt?  How do you get their reed valves?

Thanks (sorry for the re-hijack)

Sorry, I act like everybody flying 1/2A automatically knows.

Bernie is the owner of Cox International in BC, Canada
https://coxengines.ca/

And Matt is the owner of Ex Model Engines in the USA
http://www.exmodelengines.com/

Both are customer-first business guys and will do everything they can to get you what you need. If they don't have it, they'll try hard to find it for you.

A few years ago, they bought all of the remaining Cox inventory after Estes ran it into the ground, and currently pursue whatever hits the market, and are having other bits and pieces of it manufactured. They also work together when they can to make sure we can find whatever we need for both Cox and general 1/2A parts and supplies. I think they are both listed in the Stunthangar vendors section.
