Vector & T-Bird II Finished!
« on: August 31, 2008, 06:15:09 PM »
Well after summer fishing trips, tropical storm, flying field search, helping daughter move, and a million honey doo's, I finally got back to working on my two projects, Vector 40 and Thunderbird II.  I put the base color coat on both today.  I'm trying to get both done and trimmed out before the Clanton, AL shindig.  Oh well if I don't I'll go back to struggling with the FanchTwister and stay out of classic....I guess.  Can't wait to fly the Tbird tho.

Hey Phil!  Yesterday was a good day to build ..... Gustav winds kept our field pretty quiet. I'm sure yours was too. Looking forward to seeing your planes finished and flying .... especially the Vector. I finished a club members TF Score the other day, so my bench was clear and had a decision to make .... start my Vector, or the 38 Special. The 38Special won out.  I love biplanes. The ribs on the first wing are all done .... hopefully it will move right along and not take 3 months to complete.  ;)

Hope to have 3 of us flying today ..... its been great that I haven't had to use my stooge on 2 weeks. LOL!

Keep up the good work!

Well it is sort of a hybrid.....the wings are covered with $kote and the fuse is covered with silkspan and dope.  I have not gotten to the clear phase yet.

In the past two days I finally got the last coat of clear on both .  Not front row but good 'nuff for a retread like me. Vector has a LA40 and the Thunderbird has  McCoy 35.  I made provisions in both for other engine options. They both came in at 46.5 oz dry.  If IKE will move on so the winds will give us a break later this week in Florida, I'll try 'em out.  I wanted to bring them to the Central Alabama event but I don't think I can have them trimmed out by then.

Phil - I have just finished assembling an ARF Vector, and am in the process of building a Vector from the Brodak kit. My question is: what provision is there for air to exit the cowl? There is nothing shown on the plans, and nothing in the instructions about this. Obviously, the opening in the front (intake) has to be opened up for air intake, but even this is not clear. Regards, Ed

Phil - Looks like you've got some real good finishing skills there!  Those look great! I need a whole lot more practice at finishing to even remotely come close ....

Yup, hope the "IKE" winds get outta here soon .... would like some calm conditions for saturday. On sunday I'm leaving for a week to visit some family in Massachusetts, so I need a few flights to carry me through the vacation.  LOL!

The Vector looks like a OS .40/.46LA. What's in the T-Bird? And how do you keep your garage so uncluttered?

Naw! It's neat and beautiful! And a canoe, too. Mine's outside. My garage is handicapped with a low ceiling.  HB~>

PS: I thought some about what engine I'd want in a T-Bird 2.

Hope to have my shop looking that good one of these days.  The airplanes look great and compliment each other.  I like the colors and the simple scheme, if there is such a thing.  Hope they fly as well as they look.  DOC Holliday

Phil,

That's a great looking pair of airplanes.  H^^

Love the color and trim! Simple, but elegant.

Phil,

Nice work, and your finish looks beautiful. And you seem to have a very organized
and well equipped work area.

Good job!
