Just anothor boring old Cessna
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:56:32 AM »
I picked up a Fox 40 from a Craigslist ad yesterday.  $8.  It has good compression, and now that I've put the piston back in the right way around, it should run pretty good.  So I'm thinking that I'll build a plane for it -- because even if it's not the World's Best Stunt Engine, it's kinda hard to beat $8.

I'd mentioned the Cessna Agwagon article in the October 1979 FM in another thread, and John Stiles wanted a picture -- so here it is.  I'm going to dig out my Impact article, and if the numbers on the Agwagon differ too much I'll jigger it around until it matches that, while still looking "Agwagon-ish".

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I bet it sounds ferocious with that exhaust stack bolted up. But I'd rather see you with a .46LA.  H^^ Steve

All things being equal, I'd like to see me with a 46 LA, too.  Or better, an electric setup.

But they cost more than $8.  I figure I can build the plane, fly it, and if it's too much trouble to make work good I can give it away (or see just how badly John wants that engine :)).

Take the Cessna Agwagon - look at the impact article and make the following changes.

Alter the wing - to use the IMpact wing,
Build a full depth built up Fuse as to Impact plan
Modify the Agwagon tailplane to an Impact stab Dimensions and chord.
Keep the existing canopy shape.

Fox 40 is good - Id change it out for the VF 40 on pipe - that should be all you need to change.

PJ, your input is noted.  I was thinking more along the lines of retaining the Impact airfoil, tail volume coefficient, and possibly the wing aspect ratio.  Profiles are in for me right now, 'cause I'm still "Sir Crashalot".  Once I get past that I'll start doing full fuselage planes, and work on my finishing skills.

OK ok,,, so joke telling isnt my forte'  So - on a serious note - Dan Rutherford has a Wimpact which is a profile Impact.

Perhaps you could converse with him on the design / plan?

Quick and dirty - get a SIG Banshee kit and alter the fuse profile to Match the article, redo the tail feathers, move the wing   Fwd for balance and see how that Fox runs.

I've had the same 45 R/C as yours in a .60 size R/C plane, it pulled that plane with good power. It would swing an 11X5 no problem.

Tim, if that is the Agwagon I think it is, the wing appears to be almost an exact copy of a Twister wing, with deeper flaps to match the trailing edge planform of the Agwagon. Both have almost exactly the same span. I was thinking to use the plans and a Twister kit to put together an Agwagon of my own. Cheers!

Tim,

I'm coming down there on the 14th. I'm bringing you the plane and I can easily bring along a spare OS40LA I have hanging around. I also have a spare 46LA that you can have for less than $8.   ;D

Build the AgWagon just like it is and when you fly it make sure to have fuel with as much castor as possible. With the resulting smoke it should do really well in the scale class! Good looking plane do you have actual plans for the plane?

Quit that! If I spend any time at all discussing the Wimpact or W500 you-know-who will be all over it and I will have to cut my throat in order to get out of the looping circular logic.

Until PJ posted above picture--Thanks! Not!--I was safe as one had to pull a search of SSW archives in order to find information on either model.

Now that really is funny! Especially when I have always made it exceedingly clear this is merely the greatest film-covered profile CL Stunt model powered by a piped 25FP (an aluminum pipe at that!) using a plastic clunk tank and flown on .012" "StayTwisted" lines.

Mark,

Clearly there is a conspiracy here. Besides, above only applies to my Wimpact. The W500 is now the greatest blah-blah-blah plus having a stressed-skin fuselage using Spyderfoam as the core and packing 500 square inches instead of 450.

As to having either model painted, your services would clearly be preferred, even though as you note your experience is severely limited. Still, it must be stated that I am not a big fan of shooting color through the discarded undergarments of wimmen...

My best,

Bit of advice.  Just because you got an engine for $8 doesn't mean you have to build a plane for it.  Best idea is to run it on the bench to see if you are happy with how it performs.

You could spend a lot of time and a lot of money building a plane for that engine, only to find out that another, more modern engine, would be much better for stunt.  Then, you have to juggle the motor mounts and a bunch of other issues to swap engines.

It's best to listen to the advice of others about engine choice, rather than using whatever is in the junk box.

I'm going to try as much out of curiosity as anything else.  It certainly looks like it should be a dynamite engine if I treat it more like an FP 20 than a Fox 35.  (I.e., go fast and use a flat prop).

There's a free plane on it's way to me; if the engine will go in that without major surgery I'm using it, otherwise I'm going to knock something together that's almost (but not quite) too ugly for combat, just to see how it all works.
