Title: Vector 40 Tip weight box
Post by: kevin king on May 04, 2025, 01:38:23 PM
I've always found adding and securing the Brodak tip weights in the box an exercise in frustration. Is there some kind of trick for it? I have limited experience with brodak tip weight boxes.
Thanks.

Hi Kevin I usually use the stick on weights and I stick them to the sides of the box so that the bolt still goes down the middle then I use a piece of foam on the screw and press it down the centre which keeps the tip weights pressed to the outside of the box then just align the screw with the blind nut by feel and tighten the lid down I hope this helps

I use lead strips.  They fold into squares and mold to the sides of the box easily.  You can also wrap it around the center screw if you don't need much.  It is also fantastic if you need to add nose weight.

I center the amount of weight needed on the bolt (Brodak 1/4 oz weights w/ center hole) and use a small piece of fuel tubing on either side of the weights on the bolt, then bolt the assembly down. The fuel tubing secures the 1/4 oz weights on the bolt so they don't rattle around in the box. Easy to add/subtract weight as needed as the model is flight trimmed.

Brodak shows it this way on their plan drawing for models that use a weight box.

Has worked great for me, and simple to install.

I think the problem with those weight boxes is trying to thread the bolt back in to secure the lid in place.  Once of the things I have considered doing is gluing a short piece of brass tubbing aligned with the end of the blind nut to help guide the bolt in.  By doing this, you can center the bolt within the piece of tubing as you set the lid in place and it is not such a blind reach.

Good luck

Stop considering and do it.  Works great.

One thing I do on carved wing tips is don’t hollow out the OB tip. I stole that idea years ago from someone. Why remove weight only to add it back. I on my last box I added a recessed cup to guide the screw into the blind nut.
I have always wanted to build larger boxes like the ones Windy has shown on his building videos. Might 3D print something like that on the next build.

Works well for me too.
I never have a problem getting the screw into the blind nut...
Dunno why...
