« on: September 04, 2008, 05:38:49 PM »
I have been flying Park flyer's for severalyears. When I was a kid I built a ringmaster. Only got to fly it a couple of times.Got a sponsor and went off motorcycle racing for a few years. Never made it back to c/l. Short story, Ive got thebug to try again. I would like to find a group to fly with. I will need a lot of advice and guidance. Thanks for looking. Dennis

Not sure what side of town you live on, but on the east side, the Rocket City R/C club has a well maintained grass C/L flying circle that supports up to 70' lines.  Stop by on a Saturday morning and see what we've got.  For info, go to the link below (Bob's Hobby Center) and find Rocket City R/C.  To my knowledge, we're the only aeromodeling club in the area that supports C/L flying and is accepting new members.

Hi Dennis,

Did you try to use the AMA Charter Search for clubs in your area? It should tell what club is in your area and usually give a phone number e-mail address and sometimes a map of the area. Good luck, sometimes its hard to find a good flying field. Gary

Dennis,
Chuck is correct re the Orlando area.
However, IF you want to drive toward the coast, Cocoa,FL-
The Indian River Kontrol Society (IRKS) has a new site which accomodates RC, gliders and CL. We maintain three grass circles and can add more for special events.
Check the "Find One, Teach One" section on this site and scroll down to Central Florida, East Coast for more info.

Dennis, The "Find One, Teach One" section on this forum will help .... theres a listing in there for Central Florida. Theres also Phils group in Lake Wales, and mine in Mulberry (south of Lakeland). Both are R/C clubs with dedicated flying circles. The AMA website is the place to go to find all the chartered clubs in your area, then contact them to see if they fly C/L.

Both Lake Wales and Mulberry are a good 1 hour travel for you .... weekends you may make better time. It depends on you and how far you'd like to go ..... but you'd be more than welcome at either.

Dennis,
I used to CD the contests that we had at the flea mkt. in Sanford. Its been a number of years ago though. There are still 2 or 3 guys that fly Stunt out by the old Navy base exchange on Saturdays. Its about the only thing I know of in Orlando. I have been flying R/C for a number of years now but sorta loosing interest. I have been following this forum for sometime now and think its about time i got off my butt and got a plane together. I also live in Winter Park.

.... and I think thats a great decision on your part! y1

Tom, I heard about this LHS over in your area ... Graves RC. Do they carry alot of C/L stuff?  Their website shows a few things, but might not be tellin' the whole tale. Sometimes its nice to look around and 'touchey-feeley' stuff, but its quite a hike for me. Buying stuff online and paying shipping is cheaper than what it would cost in gas to get over there.  Just inquiring .....

Hope ya build a plane soon!!

Larry,

Graves has a few things in stock...lines, tanks, fuel, and bellcranks.  But I get all my stuff from Brodak...better selection...quick service.

Thanks Phil!  Its nice to know they have some stuff there .... in case of emergency and I need something fast.  Hobbytown is the closest LHS for me, but they have no C/L.  I've been testing the waters for a couple months now with different online C/L suppliers. Brodak, AeroProducts, SSHobbies .... they've all been great from start to finish. No complaints on any of them.

Supposed to be a great weekend w/6-8mph winds.... hope you get some flying in. I'll be at my field by dawn. Got a new tongue muffler to try on the Score/ST51 (had to get rid of that behemoth stock muffler), and retrim one of my FS's for a new handle. While I'm at it, I might try a tongue muffler on the same Streak.... we'll see how far I get before I'm kicked out of the circle. Its different now that I'm not the only one flying C/L .... LOL!  Its a 'good' different ....  <=

Hi Dennis

I am one of the guys that Tom is talking about that fly by the old Navy base exchange on Saturdays. This is a good site, but the stick ball players take it over on Sundays. Jim and I have not been out to fly there for over a month due to various reason including high temp and humidity.

I also fly with Chuck at Rocket city RC site out by Christmas. The club put in a nice circle for CL that does not interfer with the RC planes. It is shared on occasions with the helicopters. The one challenge the RC field has is it is lined with trees on the south side of the circle and gets interesting when the wind is out of the south.

Is the Navy Base exchange the one on the west side of the Intl airport? If so, do you fly on the ball fields or at the paved square at the Valencia driving school?

Curt,
The exchange is on the west side of the airport. The site is a paved area on the east side of road from the ballfields. Its just large enough for one circle.

Tom,
That is the one, glad to hear it is still available for flying. Maybe I will run into you sometime soon, the KOI is coming up and I have not put in a single flight for several years.

Hi Dennis,

Glad to hear another re-tread is wanting to come back to the circle!  I live in S. orlando and have flown at the Navy Exchange site and at Phil Coopy's home field out in Lake Wales. I used to fly on a piece of grass by Bear Creek Park on S. Orange Ave-but the park board crew shut us down, said it is against park rules. I asked if I colud fly a kite- no problem. Can I fly a 2 line stunt kite? Don't see a problem. I guess the issue is the engine- he said it wa a fire risk.

I travel too much to be of any real 1 0n 1 help, but feel free to ask anyway. Graves does have some stuff, and they usually have Powermaster fuel in the GMA 10 / 22 blend that works pretty good for C/L.

It has been so long since I flew ( I think last time was out at Phil's Fly-in 2 years ago) that as I type this I am assembling a Flite Streak ARF in a hotel room. in Portland , OR. I plan to fly it at the Jim Walker field at Delta Park in portland, and hopefully at The Evergreen Aero Modelers Field at the Evergren Museum down the road a bit.

Good luck and welcome back - I am always scouting for possible flying sites- if a find a new one I'll let everyone know.

Glad to hear there are a few CL flyers in the central Florida area.  I mostly fly RC with the Central Florida Sport Flyers west of Sanford.  I recently got back into CL with a Ringmaster and would like to teach my son, who has learned RC, but has not flown CL.  Unfortunately, finding a suitable CL flying site is difficult.

Anybody know of any CL sites up near Sanford/Lake Mary?

If you go to Graves hobby and ask he does have a few CL kits. Last time I looked they were in the right hand corner as you walk in the store.

As far as a place to fly all of central florida is welcome to come up to paradise field about 20 miles east of Ocala very near Forest Corners. I live in Zellwood and it is about a 45 min. drive for me. We have a paved circle see picture and a brand new grass circle which the grass has just about filled in. We fly all disciplines of control line stunt, racing, combat, carrier, and speed. Send me an email thru the forum for directions.
