USA World F2B Team Trials 2019-Tulsa
« on: August 28, 2019, 02:20:56 PM »
I hit town just after noon today and once settled at the hotel, got out to Gluedobbers (Reeves) field.  Here before us are Orestes and Jose.  Elwin Aud is getting his camera tuned for a hard week ahead.  Russel Honea greeted me as I drove up.
Jose is doing some electric repairs,  Orestes and I each got a couple flights up.  It is VERY warm in that sun and hardly any wind right now - light and variably deadly......  cooling our heals under the ceiling fan mounted under the outdoor awning.....nap style...

New shows for the day were Frank McMillin and wife and Joe Daly and son.  Looks like we may have a shootout in the Junior division coming!  The field action was mostly Orestes and myself going for the practice flight derby.  I think we came out about even.  Pretty much non-stop for six hours.  It kicked both our behinds.  Joe Gilbert flew the lawn mower on a couple of the circles.

Early morning report.  New arrivals are Howard and wife,  Wes Eakin and Eric Taylor.  This morning we have a pretty stiff southerly breeze.  The last report I saw (yesterday) said 9 mph with gusts today and tomorrow.  Bob Reeves says maybe a short very early morning rain Friday.  The weekend is supposed to be more like yesterday-5 mph to calm.  Everyone took one or two flights in the wind but are now sitting it out.  May need to wait till evening for a break in the wind.  The flag here is straight out.  As people arrive today there should be plenty of open circle time for obligatory first flights.
I’ll get a few photos soon.

I wish I didn’t have to crop these photos down so much to upload but in this shot I wanted to show the Tulsa treatment as to how they mow the circles.  There are three.  I copied this for my own circle at home.  Across the way is the church where the pilots meeting and weigh in will be.

Came from the Web Cam and it looks like a few people flying.  Sure miss the Tulsa contests and the great people.   Shouldn't you let Elwyn take the pictures while you practice? D>K

Doc the answer is yes but practice is sort of a relative question in this wind.  When you are holding on to both cheeks you run out of hands to fly.  I wouldn’t say that to a stranger, Doc!  Elwyn is fussing with his camera- can’t get happy with it but I’m sure he’ll have it well tuned by the weekend.  As it stands we have nine Sr entries and two Jr.  I think one more is considering getting in but not totally decided yet.  Rich Oliver is on the way and unfortunately Chris Rud won’t make it this time.

Starting to get light outside, rain should be out of here by noon. Another chance in the morning but thinking it will only result in a late start. Looks like our T-post markers held up to the 42mph wind gust we had overnight. Can't say the same for Howard's wind sock :)

As long as Howard didn’t leave his toolbox and his handle at the field overnight, he should be okay.

In case anyone that is here sees this. If you drive over to the church do not drive over the grass area between the two driveways. With the rain we have had it will be soft. Worst case you will get stuck best case you will make ruts that I will have to deal with.

Thanks

A bit wet early in the A M so practice didn't get very active till closer to noon. Unusually cool here for August. In the 60's early on with the high around 80. Here are a few Friday Pics.

About to head for the field.  The forecast seems to agree with what we saw back on Wednesday's projection,  Sunny, low 80's and a light and variable wind maybe 5 mph.  It will come from what is to me an unusual direction at this site-from the north northeast.  Maybe not enough to matter but that puts it over and through a group of trees and the buildings on the north side of the main circle.  Could be interesting.  In a practice flight there last night I got a great full-bottom view of my airplane going straight down on an outside square.  Typically the breezes here come from the south and mostly unobstructed. A bonus to this though is you aren't flying maneuvers into a backdrop of buildings, trees, tents and vehicles which can be rattling when you are used to flying in open spaces.
Good Luck to us all!!

Round one (of four) is done and the judges are taking five.  Few scores posted yet but I will show them from time to time.  It pretty cool out this morning and grass is very wet.  Rubber socks would have been great.  We have a gentle north wind with few surprises.  I felt a little funny stuff in the upper loop of the vertical eight and in the overheads with the breeze coming over the buildings but not too bad.  Richard Oliver is firing up to start round 2.  Joe Gilbert is heading into the other circle.

Hey Dave, if they have any bread, hot dog or hamburger bun bags, slip those on your feet then put your socks and shoes over those. We did that as kids before going out in the snow, works well for wet grass also.

I’m just glad there’s another generation coming up and I may not be the youngest one at contests as a 25 year old  LL~

Hey Dave, if they have any bread, hot dog or hamburger bun bags, slip those on your feet then put your socks and shoes over those. We did that as kids before going out in the snow, works well for wet grass also.
  Have fun and be safe,
   Dan McEntee
Thanks Dan.  I think everyone wished they had waders out there.  The sun just came out (after we finished) so nothing really dried the dew off today.  It was nice being able to fly without the hats and sunglasses.  The clouds and lower temps were a good break.  More sun but still light winds tomorrow.  The only real issue I saw today was for Joe Daly.  He found himself doing a couple maneuvers with the wind in his face suddenly.  He backpedaled and got through.  Don't know if anyone else had wet line trouble.

The number of flights flown on this site over the last 3 days must be staggering. Other than a couple hour break Friday for weather and today after the contest we have had someone in the air from dawn to dusk usually on all 3 circles. These guys are a pleasure to watch and totally dedicated to what they are doing. Hats off to every one of the contestants.

We are underway.  The first round of the Seniors is complete and Juniors are flying.  A really nice sunny morning.  My normal run of TT luck has struck with the wing on my new ship cracking in the middle on my morning warm up.  Using an old Desperado that last flew a couple years ago.  Anyway here are early scores:

Bravo to the four outstanding members of the United States of America's F2B team!  A huge DITTO to Derek Barry's cheer for the four very competitive junior fliers.  How great to see growth in the number of fine young and talented fliers who show up to compete for the great privilege of representing the USA in competition with the best from around the world. I know you will all represent us well both as competitors and as kindred spirits with those against whom you'll compete.

Well the 2019 USA Team Trials are now in the books.
I sincerely hope that all of the participants and crews who made the trip, had a great experience while here in Tulsa.

I wanted to thank all of those who came from out of town who volunteered their time to help make this a successful event.

For the 3rd consecutive TT John and Stella Hill from TX ran scoring for the event. Working alongside John & Stella was Edie Oliver,Kathleen Patterson and my wife Patty Honea.
Running scores was Colleen Gilbert, Marilee McMillan, Maggie Blanchard and Ronda Tipton.

Taking care of pull testing and pit duties was John Blanchard, Bob Hesskamp, Brent Rajillio and Tim Tipton.
John, Brent and Maggie came up from Louisiana on Wednesday to help us get ready for the weekend.

Our judges pool consisted of:

Mark Overmeir ( Head Judge )
David Fitzgerald
Keith Trostle
John Simpson
Doug Patterson
Bob McDonald
Gary McClellen ( Alternate )

( David and Keith also served as our Jurors )

In regards to our Friday night dinner for the Pilots, Judges and volunteers, Patty and I hosted a fish fry at our house for everyone. I fried over 40lbs of fish and several pounds of hush puppies. The rest of the side dishes and deserts were taken care of by all of our wonderful District 8 ladies. It was quite the feast with very little left over to put away.

One bit of excitement for the evening was when David Fitzgerald seen sparks flying at the end of my house and let me know he was concerned that we were about to have an electrical fire. After I got the tears wiped out of my eyes he was informed that I had merely turned on the bug zapper to provide additional southern entertainment.
I am still giggling about that one.

All in all a great time, thanks again everyone,

Russell Honea
