Update on Tempest/40

Here is a update on the Tempest/40 It is a reworked ARF Vector. Finish is all touch up auto spray can.I used the paint theme from my 1987 KOI winner. 44 ounces so it will be abour 46 ready to fly after clear coat. Randy Smith has the plans.

Here is latest picture 10 minutes after the clear has been added. Dupli-Color clear in the quart can. I took about 6-7 ounces to do two coats and that was with a conventional gun. I used it as it comes out of the can no thinner needed.It is lacquer so there is no shrink and it dries tacky in 5 minutes.No blush unless shot in very humid conditions. Goes on much easer than dope.Recote in 10-15 minutes. All the color is Dupli-Color spray cans. They have pearl and that color that changes in the light.$20 quart

from my experience - dupli-color is not fuel proof

Ed,

Really looks good, nice paint job, and the nostalga adds a nice touch. Was this the premixed Dupli Color. I have not used any , thought I would give it a try for trim colors.

If it is anything  close to Dupont Lacquer , it should be fine with the lower nitro stuff, I use 10 % , but have to watch raw fuel, good paint remover .

Great looking job, hope you have fun with your new baby. What power plant are you using? I guess you did all the bench trim. If you don't get raw fuel on her, she'll be just find. Give us some reports on her. Have a great day Gary.

I used this same paint on my Cardinal three years ago and sold it to Ty who also had no problem with it.Also had it on my old time plane that sprung a leak in the tank and filled the wing with fuel.Finish was OK. I will be careful and if I have problems I will let you all know and I will add another clear over it.

Forgot to add the power set up is for any ST/35-46 or even a Rustler 40. I have a ST/35 with the ABC set up from Brian Gardner that I am going to use.This is the motor that Brian used as a model for the conversion parts.I have had it in two other planes and it is a very good running motor and very powerful for a .35

I was equally impressed with that equally with that pattern overspray that is sitting UNDERNEATH that great looking model.

Talk about modern art! Any chance that you have thought about having that over-spray matted and framed? :! :!
Often when cleaning up my  display model spraybooth at my studio at Boeing....co-workers would often say.."Wow Shultzie!" That spraybooth table pattern looks RAD-DAD!" What a great piece of artwork that would make?
I would bet you my old ST 46 n' uh  handbasket...that would quickly sell at a fancy gallery that I visited a couple of weeks ago at Cannon Beach? H^^

That piece of foam has sat under a lot of planes when I have  painted them. It stops overspray from bouncing back onto the plane.

Duplicolor spray cans are great.  I used them exclusively before switching to auto paint.

Got first flight on Tempest today and it flys fine. The ST/35 is OK but not what I want so one of my ST/40-46 motors is going into it. I think the plane was a slight bit tail heavy but it did not hunt and flew pretty much like a SV-11. It goes around corners like it is on rails and stops level when leaving the corner. It is smooth but quick. NOW the big question everyone wants to know. The finish is fuel proof. I got plenty of raw fuel on the plane and it had no effect on the finish.The paint can be bought in almost any auto parts store. I used the spray can for color and sprayed the clear that comes in  quart cans $19.95. I did not thin the clear. I have no fillets on this plane and there is no pulling of the fillet area.Very sharp corners at the body wing joint with no lifting or pulling. This was a very quick paint job and it dries very fast.You could go from a clear base coat to a full paint job in a very short time using this method. I will fly it later in the week with more power.
