All day yesterday the ringmaster forum was down. In the evening I sent an Email to Dee asking if there was a problem?

The hardrive crashed on the server. An attempt to recover data and transfer to new drive is in progress.

Same question I am asking myself.
Even with a backup, if it is NOT kept at a totally independent (secure) location, you can loose the farm.
Let us hope for the best.

The server/site is donated. Moderators don't have the administrative rights/ permissions needed to perform backups, hence the problem.Keep your fingers crossed that a partial recovery can be made...

I was involved with a voice mail system that got sold to a hospital, with a RAID array. We left with instructions to "call if the disk controller shows a fault light".
About a year later (this was in the early 1990's, when hard drives were not reliable), the second hard drive in the array crashed, their voice mail was gone, and they called.
But that's not why I'm posting in this thread today. Today, I just want to whine: I want my BOTR fix!!
I hope it gets back up. Even if it comes back up nekkid with no pictures or past threads or anything, it'll be lots better than not there!

Not a member yet. But, the new card in my camera says it will hold one thousand+ pictures. The other cardhad amax of 400+. I noticed that my picture file in the computor was getting large and taking time to locate pictures. Had the wife down load all to a disc. Before I would go to Wally World and down load the card to a disc. So far the hard drive has been dependable. That is because we disconnect power supply during lightning storms. The first one was one in by lightning while I was not at home H^^

I got the same message John. Everybody sit back and relax. They are doing all that can be done at this time. It may take some doing but the "Brotherhood of the Ring" weill be back better than ever. Kudos to all who have worked so hard.

No Chuck. That is for the site owner to reregister if he wants that server. Someone will get to you as soon as we find out what to do. Do as John says for now, join the chat room. ASll info is being passed thru there when we get it.
We apologise for taking up the space with this Sparky but this is the best way to let them know right now.

There is nothing new to report, other than the drive is in the hands of a data recovery facility in Dallas.It will be shipped to Houston afterwards. We should know something within a week.Hopefully...

The second disk was probably the voice storage disk the first the system disk. SCSI drives of the day were quite reliable. That is if they used SCSI. By yoir description it was not a mirrored system (raid 0). Wonder what crappy or under optioned VM system it was.

Richard is correct. All updates will go to the old address when they are known. If you wish to know faster, well I don't think there is a faster way. You can always do what I advised above and get your email address to Dee. We are trying to get all the addresses we can so no one gets left behind.

No it was not. I built the PC it was in. It was RAID 1, using ESDI drives in some controller. And I was part of the team that instructed the customer about looking at the status display on the controller (it wasn't integrated into the program in any way). The drives we were getting were _not_ reliable, although we started using SCSI drives shortly after that and reliability went up. The controller clearly showed that a drive was defective when we picked up the machine, so whatever fault is due a non-technical customer that doesn't understand how to keep the magic in the box, it was their fault (we won't go into what team of techno-geeks decided that a receptionist was qualified to look at a little LCD screen every day and verify that it said "DRIVE OK". Other than to say that it wasn't me -- I didn't have the seniority).
The system was primarily designed as an easily customized voice response system. I honestly can't remember if the customer was using anything more than voice mail on it, however (we often ended up selling VM systems "and you can move up to custom solutions later"). The programming "language" was bizarre, being a mutated offspring of a spreadsheet and BASIC. The chief software engineer ended up leaving the company to be a salesman at a bookstore, if that gives you any clues as to the nature of the beast.
It was my first job out of college, it was 1991 and Portland was flooded with the engineers escaping the sinking Tektronix, so I was happy to get a job that paid a living wage and occasionally allowed my to do circuit design, even if what I really did was (in descending order) build PCs, QC PCs, select PCs, and in any remaining time do the afore-mentioned circuit design and the occasional systems engineering.
I had an MSEE, I was wrenching on PC's, and I was happy to get the job. On my first day my boss pointed to my technician's desk and told me to learn everything I could from him, because that Friday I was expected to fire the guy.

Well, Dee Rice says that they have pretty much given up on recovering anything to speak of from the original site. They are planning on getting something going again maybe using the same forum software that they used before. They still do not have a host for the forum and they want to be absolutely certain that any new host has a 100% backup going to insure recovery from future disastrous crashes!!
That is about as much as I know (as of Aug 10th).
Meanwhile, start thinking about the 4th Annual Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon!! It will be October 1st and 2nd and a flier of informatio0n is attached.
