Southwest Regionals in Tucson
« on: January 25, 2013, 08:59:24 AM »
Given the weather conditions does anybody know if the Southwest Regionals are still on for this weekend?   If you know something please respond before we hit the road from So. Cal.

I just got off the phone with Warren Tiahrt, he is the CD for the Southwest Regionals and he reports the contest is still on.  Uncle Mikey thanks for the email, your information was a great help.

The weather in Tucson today was warm 70's and mostly overcast with little to no wind.  Flying was good...

The forecast for tomorrow is warm with periods of light rain.  Sunday is pretty much the same.  I personally doubt that the rain will severely interfere with the contest except for some periodic delays.

However...the weather has been a little unpredictable eveywhere lately.

At 6:45 pm Fri, TV News says it's going to rain buckets on Saturday -- scattered showers on Sunday -- but then they also say the US Economy is improving, so who knows?  ???  ???  ???

It was PERFECT on Sunday, couldn't have been any better. Saturday only had a few showers but they were impressive. For about a half an hour after the last one, it was also PERFECT, then in the space of 2 minutes it went from that, to "pack it in" winds. But today was just fine pretty much all day, wasn't too cold or hot, and we got the entire contest in (including those events deferred from yesterday, all before 3:30.

More people need to come to this contest, it's been great every time I have been here.

Well Tuscon can't gaurantee the weather for each contest.   I know as I have attended VSC numerous times.  One year did not even get an official flight.

. . . One year did not even get an official flight.

That would've been VSC-10 ... the 'El Nino' year ... rain, wind, sleet, snow in the hills.  Total wipeout.  We spent most of that weekend sitting inside a local IHOP.  Ghastly!

Normally, though, mid-March here is sunny, in the mid-80s...very pleasant.

Of course, there are the vagaries of the weather no matter where you go. It was 65 degrees and mostly sunny, and very pleasant. That's a lot better than it was most places today.

Unfortunately, I needed to leave early today, so don't know "who won what".  Hopefully, someone will soon post results: Stunt, Carrier, Combat.

The 2013 Southwest Regionals,in Tucson, are in the books and we got it all done on Sunday. As Pit Boss I want to thank all the contestants that were so helpful and willing to co-operate in order to complete the contest on Sunday.

The veiled threats of physical violence for failing to cooperate was also of immense assistance.

I'm not going to try to list the placings etc., because I know I'd get it wrong.  I will say that Bret Buck put in some very impressive patterns with an excellent flying airplane (Infinity), and very consistent engine runs.  He won Expert but did get some competition from a local or two.

Not only is Brett a fine modeler and stunt flier but is a truly fine gentleman and is very welcome in Tucson anytime.

It was very nice to have you here Brett...now if we can just get you to fly Classic or Old Time and come to VSC...

Chip Hyde did very well in his very first CL contest flying in Expert.  Not sure what his final standing was but his scores without appearance points were in the 540's or higher.

This guy is serious and can fly!  Also a fine gentleman!

Thanx, Randy.  I had to leave early, before final results were known.  Hopefully, those will be posted somewhere soon.

Agreed about Brett!  A real gentleman, and I was glad to see him again.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I'm trying to get them to post them Tim.  I had to leave before the presentations and didn't get a picture of the scoreboard.

Hopefully I'll get them soon.

Thanks Randy for posting the score board pics. You guys really put on a great contest. I had a great time flying the slow combat event for a third place finish and beginner stunt for a hard fought first place. I was the only entrant in beginner but it was hard fought just the same as you can tell by my score... We flew the slow combat event on Saturday in between the rain storms with the field heavily puddled and the pilots circle 2-3" deep of water.

You guys really shine a bright light on control line and have an amazing event not to mention a darn good Saturday night party! The Cholla Chopper events are a hard act to follow and run by the best of the best folks in control line flying.
I'll look toward to seeing all you guys again next year and hopefully much sooner at the Palmer Memorial hosted by  The Knights of the Round Circle in April 27 & 28 at Whittier Narrows.

Thanks guys for hosting such a great event and welcoming us out-of-towners to your events. Hope to see you all again soon!
