The assistant to the assistant deputy commissioner has decreed that henceforth the fox 15 hurl east shall take place on Saturday, September 17 promptly at 1 PM in the afternoon records are expected to be set for ideal weather conditions and the bounce on the hurl! Field conditions to be assessed.
-
Does “Unsanctioned” in this case mean that the event can approve the use of a uncertified (no standards related to weight, aerodynamics, oil coating, etc.) Fox 15?
-
When they're all gone you'll be sorry. ;D S?P
-
Since it is unsanctioned ,is slingshot assist allowed? Are we hurling towards the water or towards the cemetery? If the fox 15 climbs over 200' high in the hurl, do we need FAA clearance since we are less than 2 miles from a major airport? Or have you obtained pre clearance in writing from the tower already? Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer these very important questions. Oh, and is the west coast ringer (we all know who that is, no need to mention names) going to be allowed to participate as he may have an unfair advantage?
-
Yes we have FAA clearance and yes even though unsanctioned this hurl shall be in accordance with the full 10 volume set of rules
-
Each hurl article shall be weighed and measured for compliance. No foreign substances allowed
-
All engines must be free of any internal or external paint, since doping is not allowed! >:D
-
How about plugging all openings and filling the Fox .15 with helium? Is that allowed per the rules? Helium is a natural substance, after all. Inquiring cheat..., er, minds would like to know.

I have it on good authority that there may be a 'sheep in wolf's clothing' showing up at the East Coast Fox 15 Hurl. This individual is well known for his underhanded shenanigans that must be carefully watch and monitored. Said individual will try to circumvent the Hurl Rules as laid out by the Fox 15 Hurl Committee.
This individual is know to make use of certain illegal substances. One such substance currently under review by the "Maximum Leader of the Hurl" (self appointed) and the Hurl Committee, is the use of Cap'n Crunch's Peanut Butter Crunch. The evidence of use will be the dripping of milk from the sides of the mouth and down his chin. Other signs to look for will be milk stains on his shirt. But this will be difficult to determine, as he tends to wear white shirts.
If said individual show up and participate in the East Coast Fox 15 Hurl ---- BEWARE!
Dennis
ps: We are also aware that this said individual will be in attendance at the Fox 15 Hurl in California that takes place in Napa on Sept 25, 2022. Hide the women and children!

What "will try" are you talking about? How about "already has"? It is perfectly obvious who is behind this completely unexpected, and unsanctioned, Hurl.
However, in consultation with the commissioner and after extensive discussion between the Hurl Committee members, we see absolutely nothing wrong with people deciding to hurl Fox 15s in any circumstances, and hurling them (off the pallisades, or into the Jersey flats) is perfectly fine - as long as no one attempts to use them to fly a model airplane.
We will of course notify the local authorities and, er, our "associates" who dispense "enforcement" to ensure that all local, state, and Federal laws are adhered to.
Naturally, any distances recorded will not be official, as neither have the Hurling Ground been certified nor were the engines issued by Hurl Technical Services, but otherwise, and notwithstanding the "unnamed individual" behind it all, we encourage everyone to experience and enjoy the gala celebration of The Hurl! I expect to see Snooki and The Situation hurling Fox 15s on a TV screen near you, check your local listings.
In other words, have at it, gentlemen!
ps: We are also aware that this said individual will be in attendance at the Fox 15 Hurl in California that takes place in Napa on Sept 25, 2022. Hide the women and children!
Will he? Attendance, probably, but participation? Rule 69, paragraphs C and G, loom.

Peanut Butter Crunch and hurl in the same sentence? A coincidence? Me thinks not...

Make it super simple. Provide one Fox .15 that every one must use. That way the only cheating will be trying to sneak in another Fox .15. Also the event director will/should provide said Fox. S?P

One must remember that the Fox 15 Hurl is an international event. To be an official and recognized Fox 15 Hurl event, several rules must be complied with. Just off the top of my head are these rules that come to mind:
1. All Fox 15's used must be certified by the Fox 15 Hurl Technical Services for compliance.
2. The Hurling Grounds used for the Fox 15 Hurl must also be certified by the Fox 15 Hurl Technical Services in order to be classified as a "sanctioned" event.
3. The Fox 15 Hurl Event Director must be a member of the Fox 15 Hurl Committee or appointed and assigned by this committee.
That is why this event held on the East Coast is entitled as an "Unsanctioned Fox 15 Hurl" and as a result any official distance records are invalid.
Dennis
ps: I would provide the actual quote from the official Fox 15 Hurl Rules, however I currently do not access to the various scrolls at this time.

Way ahead of you there, Doc! For sanctioned competition or record trials, engines have to be drawn from the (extensive) collection maintained by Hurl Technical Services, and issued for each event - and, needless to say, returned afterward. This is straight from Rule 3, it is not hard to understand and completely definitive.
The purpose of such a rule is obvious, even from this thread; to preserve the integrity - and I will just say it, the majesty - of The Hurl. It is very tempting for those lesser-versed in the history of the hurl to view it as a simple athletic competition, rather than the solemn and serious recognition of its formative principles. We like to have a good time, of course, but one cannot deny the deep historical and philosophical underpinnings upon which is based. It's out of ignorance, not stupidity but does nonetheless undermine the legitimacy of the competition.
So, these individuals may attempt to increase their score by altering the engine aerodynamics or mass properties, effectively increasing the ballistic coefficient. Typically, this means breaking off protuberances (glow plug electrode, needle valve, etc) and/or filling the engine with some massive material, depleted (we hope ...) uranium* and gold being particularly effective. Naturally, this cannot be tolerated as it undermines the integrity of the competition. So engines for sanctioned competition are issued for each event by Hurl Technical Services to ensure that they are as Duke intended and have the same aerodynamic and ballistic properties.
So, while we always encourage the the Hurling of Fox 15s a fun way to implement an serious moral imperative, we do have to ensure that official records are not sullied by malfeasance or ignorance, so sanction competition, supply appropriate engines, inspect and certify the Hurling Grounds, etc, before a competition is recognized. We would be happy to discuss with the organizers of remote-site Hurls any requirements they might have and are willing to entertain alternative competition sites and events.
Unfortunately, due to the typically and stunningly obvious machinations of one individual, this particular "activity" may result in the desireable outcome of Fox 15s being Hurled, but cannot be sanctioned under the current conditions. In many ways, the participants are victims of this individual, and I certainly hope that everyone expresses their opinions on being innocently embroiled in a controversy that could easily have been avoided.
We hope everyone enjoys themselves, and we hope in the future to work with the people involved to bring their event up to standards. Our most important goal with The Hurl is to *bring people together* in a joyous celebration! In that spirit, this unfortunate incident has suggested just such a special event that would be ideally suited to our New Jersey friends, and may turn this negative into a tremendous positive and create a unique "hands across the water" event. It will require EPA and Coast Guard approval, but expect an exciting annoucement on the details soon through the usual Hurl Committee channels!
As always, of course, thanks for your interest in the international phenomenon known as The Hurl!
Brett
*note that either U235 or 238 has nearly the same mass and are about equally effective at increasing the ballistic coefficient - that's why they are so hard to separate, For our purposes, U238 is slightly better due to the extra three neutrons, so naturally, one way to improve your score/cheat is to separate it out, extracting pure 238 and discarding the useless waste product U235. Here is one photo demonstrating the lengths to which some people go to cheat at a Hurl:
These young ladies in Tennessee are operating the separation equipment.
I would also note that after extensive experimentation, we have discovered that even a worst-case combination of geometry and moderation (i.e. throwing it in the Irrigation slew at the former Woodland Site, or this year, the Napa River) cannot result in a critical mass and thus is not a concern for a criticality accident, at least not using Uranium or plutonium.

Rumor has it although not verified. There has been a new world record Hurl in Flushing. The ole Fox traveled 235' before finally resting on the famed flushing meadow park turf. The Fox 15 was completely checked out by the event director who will remain anonymous fot the time being.

Naturally. However, you overlook the obvious possibilities of overhead surveillance.

See, this just shows that some people *have never even done a wind tunnel test on a Fox 15*, if you can believe that!

The assistant to the assistant deputy commissioner has conformed that a fox 15 actually was hurled 235 and 1/4 feet.

I would say you are associating with a pretty questionable individual, there.
Brett

Also to make all aware the hurl plugged with no roll at 235 and a 1/4 feet.
-
I should say that individual has a new career path ahead of them. Full scale aerobatic world champions have struggled to attain such distances.
But on another note. What is the penalty for attempting to fly with a fox.15 at a hurling event? After today's dismal engine performance, the akromaster suddenly comes to mind. Last in lunch line, one year suspension, or lifetime ban?

Check state and local statutes, since it may well be illegal in some localities. Federal, too, if HB 22-146 passes (and we all pray it does!).

The first picture depicts, possbly, the surveillance that Brett eluded to. Could it be someone checking the legitimacy of the east coast hurl? Hmm

Second photo is the official measuring of the world record hurl. Gps was also used to back up the commissioner's findings

That's just the helicopter you *saw*. It might have been a decoy...
I also note previously-mentioned "questionable individual" in the second picture.

Lastly a picture from the world record hurl banquet honoring Steven Daly as the world record holder and East Coast Champion. Rumors are circulating that Steven will be attending next weeks meet and meat to unify his championship by winning the west coast hurl and being our national champion. How could this happen? First go around for the east coast hurl and the kid sets a record! The "commish" is still being a bit camera shy and refuses to be photographed. As there may be some razzing from his fellow west coast contingent
-
This just came in. I just obtained a uncropped photo from the New York post identifying the east coast commissioner. Maybe some will recognize him.

All I have to say is that he might just as well stay on the East Coast at this point.
Brett
-
I probably should add, the subject engine supplied by yours truly was analyzed by the commisioner and he was quite impressed with the engine and period correct Fireball glow plug.
For those out there concerned, all safety measures were executed to the fullest extent and the Fox 15 survived the event with no damage whatsoever!
I repeat no fox 15's were damaged in this event.

I see the east coast was bamboozled by this "said individual". And no wonder, look what they were using!
This is a tragedy of the greatest kind. However, the remarkable thing . . . This Fox 15 never ran and flew so well!

Tom
That is the real tragedy.
This surprise offensive launched on Fox 15's by the salty vanguard of the East Coast Contingent could have been humanity's chance to have reduced worldwide Fox 15 numbers by at least one.
With greater effort and constant vigilance we can prevail over this vile, six decade plague that is known as Fox 15.

Mr. Nunes,
There were no turbulators, Vortex generators, or Do-Dads used in the East Coast Hurl. Quite frankly, the commissioner is appalled by this accusation.
That's just the helicopter you *saw*. It might have been a decoy...
I also note previously-mentioned "questionable individual" in the second picture.

Developing news:
Please note the perfect positioning of the helicopter in photo 2, now deemed Exhibit A. Also, there has been photos/video of the passenger now deemed exhibit B. However, we are only allowed to release a file photo(shown below) and obtained a copy of the charter showing the signature of one of the alias's this individual uses. The signature and check used was signed by one BB BELLCRANK. Seems a bit fishy to me!
I have now been advised by legal counsel to not partake in any future discussion in this matter.

Oh the things that the "said individual" will do to deflect attention from the real perpetrator. To use a forged signature and a fake photo of the "Maximum Leader (self-appointed)" is a travesty. Just to set the record straight, attached is the official surveillance photo from the files of the CIA, FBI and local yahoos of the "said individual" behind this tomfoolery.
Now, for the advice you received from your legal counsel, you really need to find better legal counsel.

I was just informed from the assistant to the assistant deputy commissioner that there will be a special investigation on what took place on September the 17th at the world Flushing Meadows Park. I was also informed that Brett Buck will be the lead investigator.

I am glad you mentioned that because the retrievers are a critical part of the process. The Hurl Official doing the measuring or his designee are responsible for returning the Hurled engine to the center of the Hurling Grounds, and generally here is also a retriever or catcher, if you will, receiving the returned engine. When the Commissioner is capable of fulfilling the measuring duties, I have traditionally been the catcher, using a McGregor open-web outfielders glove and my ever-diminishing baseball defensive skills. I make some good snags on engines in the air, they are very hard to predict once they are skipping on the ground due to the asymmetry and tendency to take bad hops.
Of course you can also use the return throws to intimidate your rivals, if they do their best and you go get it, then casually toss it back in the air for the entire distance of their throw and roll, it shows how much more macho you are than them.

As a Free Flight Nerd I certainly appreciate retrievers.
I was really interested in the catching aspect. Hearing that using a glove is allowed was disheartening. Some would think that an overt display of toxic masculinity would necessarily demand bare-handed catches.
I certainly appreciate the subtle aspects of intimidation there. At the FF field we just ask " that all you got?"
-
Well the East Coast Hurl Commissioner was almost killed from a stray Hurl by, yours truly. For best safety practices all should keep their distance. My forward rotation with a slight bit of right hand rotation, didnt work so well! It caused a almost deadly hook and absolutely no rollout.
Happy Hurling

Not to worry, as the participants in this (unsanctioned) Hurl undoubtedly discovered, some of the long-time participants are unbearably obnoxious in other ways.

It most certainly IS Sanctioned. While we are happy to see engines Hurled under almost any circumstances for sport, there is one and only one sanctioned Hurl this year (or any previous year, I might add). This weekend's event is a mere 10 miles or so from the sainted Original Hurl Site at the Nut Tree Airport in Vacaville, and therefore, arguably, even more trancendent than normal.
I do find it unfortunate that some individual is going around claiming to be a Hurl official - when he is most certainly NOT - and claiming sanction for other sites and Hurls. We do not hold it against the participants, again, we celebrate their joyous experience.
But we most definitely DO hold it against the person violating rule 17 "Impersonating a Hurl Official", and rest assured, if he is so interested in a sanction, boy oh boy, is he going to get more "sanctions" than he ever expected to!
Brett
