Union Model Airplane Club Video 1966
« on: December 26, 2014, 04:54:16 PM »
I finally converted my Dad's 8mm home movies from 1966 and uploaded it to youtube.  This is a Union Model Airplane club picnic at the field behind Elastic Stop Nut in Union, NJ.  I'm the skinny kid flipping the prop, without a glove, on the yellow twin model with two Fox 35 stunts on it.  I recognize a lot of the faces but can't remember the names. Help me put some names to the faces because I'm sure some of you are still out there.
Enjoy,  Al

Not being from that area I would not recognize any body let alone know them.   Be nice if the film was a little lighter.  Need to find my old super 8's.   I do have a cassette that the Chamber brothers gave me.  It show the old Swope Park circle and us trying to fly F2C.  Were we really that skinny back then?  Thanks for the bit of history.

Probably taken during the Spring  club picnic. Some of the faces, besides Al,  are George and Paul Rizkalla , Wayne Colgan, Frank DeCicco and Bill " The Butcher " Stauback  who was manning  the grill.
No doubt Scarinzi was on his way there. I recall another member mentioning a sighting of Larry,  head out the window, nose to the wind , speeding west on Route 10  Whippany on his way towards Union, breathin' in the burgers and eats...

No doubt, the earliest type of navigation.

Just took another look ... and I stand corrected. Club President  Vernon "Mr." Davies at the grill, Larry eating and walking with Al Needleman, (his fuel guy  by night and  a pharmacist by day), and the inseparable/irrepressible team of  George Schnebbe and Howie Boutiliette. Some others- Greg Cerillo, Mike Hotra and  I think maybe Don Shulman( Leon's son/ Jason's Dad).

If Al can brighten it up someway, we might be able to i.d. more.

Rest in peace George, Howie, Vernon, Bill, Frank ...

Thank you very much for the trip into C/L Yesteryear.  Though I was born/raised in the Midwest, (I was 14 in '66) the "look" of the film, the attire, the action, et al, was very evocative of good model airplane based memories for me, too.

Looks like it was a great day of just having some fun n' fellowship with your flying buds.
Searching to find my new place in this hobby!

I spent many Memorial Days up at Union with my fellow Flying Dutchman of Lancaster, PA flying Combat! Harold Brown may well have been in the mix certainly if Don Schulman was there Harold was as well! Frank's memory is more likely to be keener since he's so much younger now as he was younger then!

Al-great video and great memories!! I remember that yellow twin like it was yesterday! It was Jerry Luckys. I was 7 in that video and those are still some of most vivid memories of my youth. Thursday night flying followed by dogs at 5-Points-Petersons-Galloping Hill! Here is one of my all time favorite photos of me and my dad at ESNA. Not sure if anyone remembers this bird but yeah it's ukie and dad used to load it up with streamers and 2-3 others would fly with him and yes I have video! Quality isn't great but certainly a keepsake along with my Fighting UMACers memories!

What airplane is that reddish/orange one?  ;D That might be a good classic to build.

That burgundy stuntship is a George Rizkalla "original". All of my dads planes were scratch built original designs.

The yellow twin originally belonged to Jerry.  He crashed it and was going to throw it away, so I took all the pieces home on my bicycle and resurrected the plane.  I still had it in 1976 until it crashed from the bell crank letting go.  In the video my best friend, Richie Hollywood, is holding the twin while I started it.  Sadly, Richie is no longer with us. We used to ride our bikes almost everyday in the summer to go flying.  The guy in the white hoodie, winding out the combat ship, is the Butcher.  I think that's Don Schulman drinking a cup of coffee at 4:35 in the video.  Paul, my Dad always talked about how much he appreciated your Dad's craftsmanship and enjoyed watching him fly his beautiful models.

Agreed on George's building. To this day, I use his building standard as a  benchmark for my own building.

Happy New Year!
