Ukey 40
« on: May 23, 2006, 11:55:32 AM »
At long last my Ukey 40 has been shipped.  Ive been told it is an excellent training plane.  Because of that Ive been waiting for it to make my first flight in 30 years.  Bill Little will have his hands full helping me but Im sure he will be glad to have another local NCer to fly with.

I have been to the Glue Dobbers site and seen the mods to the plane that they recommend.  I do have a couple questions for you all though...on another forum :-X it was discussed that the Ukeys are pretty light and that a 40 engine would actually be to much power.

I'm curious to hear from those that have a Ukey...what do you recommend to power a Ukey 40...what length lines...what fuel tank you use...and any other advice.

As always, your comments and recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks...Thomas

Thomas,
I chose the Ukey 35 to return to CL with. It was recommended that I use the OS 20 FP and the Brett Buck setup. I’ve been very pleased with my set up it works really well. I’m not too sure that the 20 FP will haul the Ukey 40 with the same authority. If it were me with the Ukey 40, I would try the 25 LA control line engine.
When you set up to put the wings on your Ukey, don’t toss out the wing packing, it’s actually what’s left when the wing cores are cut. They make perfect cradles to hold the wing while gluing them to the fuselage. Just make sure your board is dead level and your good to go.
You may want to replace the metal bellcrank if it comes with one. Mine did not last 8 flights before the pushrod hole hogged out.

Thomas,
I got back into control line flying with one of Jim Pearson's Ukey 35s.  It gave me a lot of handle time and it was easy to fix after  my many major crashes.  I used an OS 40 LA with a FP back plate,  a 'Just' NVA and an APC 10x4 .  The venturi was built by Scott Riese.
I have given my last Ukey 35 to a friend who is having a ball with it powered with a Fox 35.
They are great trainers and are capable of flying the pattern.
  Have fun.

Mine is a 40 size and I fly it with an OS 25 FP.  apc or tornado 10 -4.  Stock muffler, 3 oz tank.   A little ballast to help it in the turbulence was an improvement.  Mine has two wheel grass gear.  Will fly a pattern in the mid to hi 400's.

I think on .015" x 62'   around 5-5.2 sec/lap.

Sig Champion 20% 50-50 fuel,  When it get hot out, go up to 12 or 15%.

I have flown them also with as much as heavy Fox 40's on them--I like the smaller motor better--less nose heavy altho they do well .

Dont spend any time making it look good cause it will probably get trashed several times along the way!

I added a little tip weight, and also a way to adjust the leadout position.

FWIW
