Phil Granderson and I years ago....were watching some  of our beloved stunt grunt brothers fly their pattern and were commenting that WATCHING THE PILOT can actually be a LOT MORE INTERESTING than watching the pattern that the flyer is performing.

I see so many photos on these websites that show the antics and body language..that border on as much fun as watching programs like DANCING WITH THE STARS and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE?

How bout posting and attaching some of them here when you find an interesting one?

I think Elwyn Aud has posted photos on here before of people in the center.  If I could find it was one of me.  Red shop rag in hip pocket.  Shirt tail hanging out.  Gut hanging over the belt line.  Suspenders doing their best to keep me from insulting myself and also keeping the ladies from going into hysterical laughter.  DOC Holliay

Yeh...Although I knew it was the "FOX HURL" I can clearly remember so many flyers "IN THAT SAME POSE!" JUST AFTER THEIR STUNT MODELS..."HIT THE TARMAC" trying to show THE FOLKS JUST HOW LOW THEY COULD FLY THE INSIDE SQUARE CORNERS..

At the 67 Olatha Nats......one of our competitors had a couple of six packs of coke and pepsi...and after that INFAMOUS FIRST ROUND FROM HELL WAS OVER...
The wind was still blowing and I can't remember exactly who....but his name was Jimmy J.Van Loo...
He took those "M-T!" POP CANS...GAVE EACH ONE OF US AN EMPTY ONE....
INSTRUCTED US TO LINE UP ON THE TARMAC STRIP! 
ON HIS COMMAND "READY-SET-GOOOOOO!!!!
We were to release our empty "POP" to start the race.

(actually I substituted my beloved old RAINIER BRUUUUUU BEER CAN, instead. It was one of those old Steel one that weight a tad more.. )

Mike Stott and Tim Dunlop were standing two tar strips down wind.... waiting with an old red wiping rag to determine who's can crossed the finish line first, thus winning a free drink of his choice and would not have to pay his share of the Pizza tab that eve.

The last can to finish would have to buy the first round of beer or "POP!" As luck would have it...THAT OL' STEEL RAINIER BEER CAN DID ME IN...due in part to the extra weight...the Kansas Winds...just wouldn't let it FLY LIKE THOSE OTHER LIGHT WEIGHT ALUMINUM POP CANS.
The first can to cross the finish line...was a Pepsi can....but a few of us...forgot to ink pen our names onto the cans. 
The REAL DOWN SIDE WAS...THAT THE NAVY FOLKS....DID NOT appreciate that because the winds were so strong MOST OF THE CAN WERE LONG GONE DOWN THE TARMAC, FLYING FASTER THAN MIKE STOTT OR TIM DUNLOP COULD RUN to retrieve those runaway POP CANs.
As luck would have it...only a few cans were retrieved...(including my empty steel beer can) which I was sternly reminded that this was a BOOSE FREE ZONE that our POP can contest was conducted was totally illegal and WOULD NOT BE SACTIONED BY EITHER THE NAVY OR THE AMA?

AHHH TO THE MEMORIES OF "POP CAN RACING!!" GEE, HOW THE STORY GETS BETTA EVERYTIME SOMEONE TELLS IT? 

"READY? SET!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I'm not sure where the picture is Doc is thinking of but here's one of Doc at VSC 17 that I could locate easily. I found one of Doc's granddaughter flying in beginner with an assist from of John Bender. Here's another pic I got recently in Dallas of Dale McCord that I especially like.

Here is one of me at Topeka in 2005. Guy on the ground with camera is taking pictures for the Topeka paper. I must have been in the overheads in this shot. When I am flying it is sometimes hard to tell just what I am doing. .  In the second picture I was giving the hand signal to the judges, and this picture was put in the paper with the caption that I was waving to the crowd while flying.

Uhhhhhhh? That guy on the ground shooting up at you.....looks like the guy that was caught last year at the county fair in Enumclaw...that was shooting under the skirts of the Cheerleaders demo...and after a complaint was filed from one of the teachers...he was hauled off to the POKEY and had all his film deleted.
I hear that photographer moved his operation to California...to reopen his Website.

Elwyn....HOW DID THAT SHOOT OF YOURS TURN OUT?  I would have loved to try that on that Ski run from the 10,000 ft level of Mt. Hood in the "crazeeeold days?

The one at VSC wasn't that hot but I had several at the home field that turned out fairly well. You have to have the camera zoomed out quite a bit in order to keep the aircraft in frame so the plane isn't a very large part of the overall shot. It does give the plane plenty of room to move within the frame.If you were zoomed in very much the image was start to get jumpy anyhow. Maybe I'll dig out the tapes after Brodaks and transfer a few to DVD for a few of those interested.
