Uhhh..... it's hailing.....
« on: November 15, 2010, 06:32:52 PM »
It was a semi nice Michigan November day, high 40's, sun, not too breezy. I say "hey Mike, (my son) lets get the prop test we've been thinking about in". "Heck yes" says Mike..... he's very agreeable. We toss the electric Hellcat in the car and run out to the field. Roll out the lines in the warm sun, push the button and I'm flying. All of a sudden Mike shouts to get my attention to let me know he feels rain....... no wait I realize, it's hail. I'm a minute into a 6 minute run and it's hailing...... wth??? Well it only lasted about a minute or two and the sun came back out. We even got a second flight in. But now I can actually say yes to that question about whether I've ever flown while it's hailing. Don't tell Dennis, it's his Hellcat......... Oh the prop didn't work...... too small

Guess you didn't get hail like we have in KANSAS once in a while.  Cars covered with dents and windshields knocked out.  Now the other H**l was a word in the lyrics of a song  my daughter was learning to sing for Church.  I hd to explain to her that in the song it was part of the song not being used as a cuss word.  Anyway it sounds more like what we call sleet here.  Even, sleet, does not feel too good. Well, we only had rain. Oh, and WIND. About 50mph last night. Power went out about 9pm and is still off. 100' fir trees + 50MPH winds usually equals no power around here. Hope it's back on when I get home from work. It was cold this morning.

I agree on the hail size. It was just big enough to sting a bit and make the mono coat ping VERY loudly.. %^@

I flew an "I" beamer in hail many years ago. Fortunately it was covered with Poly Span, and didn't break the skin.  However, it did crack the paint at every impact point  (OK, pun intended). I knew it was going to be bad, so I turned it inverted and sustained most of the damage on the underside of the wing. I waited as long as I could before it ran out of gas, before turning upright, but still got some damage from that time upright.

That plane survived, and allegedly flew into a tree later in life. It even survived that, allegedly....

Randy,,
50 mph, thats all? sheesh,
the airport here saw 80 to 85mph,, Normally we are a few mph above the airport because of the way the hills around our house funnel it,, it was FUN. had to pick up the scattered shingle tabs from theyard today, but no trees thankfully,,

Dave, good job on sneakin in a flight,, I went out last week with my friend and his RM 526 E power to help him get some rough trim in,, it was about 40 degrees,, but the sun was out so it felt warm,, He commented on how good I fly, I was so relaxed I flew tricks with my hand in my pocket, I didnt have the heart to tell him that was to keep warm lol,,
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Sounds like you need a portable generator.  My son brought us one several years ago so we could keep the furnace, refrigerater and a light going.  Still don't have one myself as we a had a mild winter last year except for the sub zero temps.

Mark,

I have 100' fir trees all around. Anything above 50mph gets dicey. A couple of years ago we had 90mph wind come through. That was exciting. Power was out for most of 2 weeks. Back to the stone age, man.

The local power outfit claims it's working on installing more underground power lines. But that sort of went into the can when the economy tanked. Hope they get back to that eventually.

Wow. I like the inverted part. I did about 60 lazy eights so I could keep my face down wind.. Hail, trees nothing can stop a well built stunter.

I left to go to lunch today and, yes, it was HAILING. I blame Dave for the bad mojo. Now it's just pouring buckets of rain and the wind is picking up again.  Joy!
