ARE YOU READY?!!!!
The team selection trials for the 2014 World Championship in Poland are Labor Day weekend in Muncie.
This is the hardest, most exhausting and challenging contest but also the most rewarding. It moves at a much faster pace than the Nats due to shorter flight times and a compressed format. Here you place a $100.00 bet on your skills and go for it.
I and I'm sure others will try to report the happenings. I plan to arrive about dinner hour Thursday and will get to the Lpad. Friday is practice and the pilots meeting. The shoot out begins Saturday. Good Luck and safe travel to us all!!!!

Best of luck to all the guys/gals trying for the team. I say gals as I know of one young lady that could make the Junior team.
-
So we keep her fingers, because looks like F2B circle is last without girls ... even in speed circle (and it is for strong hands) this year ECh bronze junior medailist was young Claudia from Italy :- )))

So we keep her fingers, because looks like F2B circle is last without girls ... even in speed circle (and it is for strong hands) this year ECh bronze junior medailist was young Claudia from Italy :- )))
Perhaps she could arrange a "Go Daddy.Com" sponsorship and become rich and famous!
-
hhihihihihi : ))) :D
They had a little star in Italy, i see celebration in all Italy - news papers, issue ; )) magazines ; ))) tv ; ))) that's great motivation for young people! She is only 17 and probably very hard for her knowing that it's the only one female!
However pushing forwards a young people is great idea. All in control line world need that I think not only in F2B class. So really hope to see young girls and boys in World Champ next year :)
Greetings to all in USA : ) team, see you soon guys : ))
-
Dave, are you commentating for the Team Trials?
-
Yes Randy , between my own flying.
-
Dave,
Thanks ahead of time your reports (and pictures) ... looking forward to them.
Dallas Model Aircraft Assoc. (DMAA) will have Richard Oliver, Frank McMillan, Joe Gilbert and Mike Scott competing. Hopefully we a a chance of having a team member... Good luck to all.
-
I'm sure we will all be "glued to the screen". Your reports at the Nats was really wonderful.
-
Hey Dave,I'll see ya down there.I have volunteered to help out again and I can't wait to see the festivities.Trax
-
Who has arrived??
-
I am sure that Orestes is there, he and I spoke yesterday. Bill Rich is probably there, I talked to him Monday. I think Howard is either there or still on the way. I will not be there.
Derek
-
Derek,
You will be missed.
-
Orestes is there just checked in. Josias will arrive tonight, Richard Oliver is also present.
Electric Sharks are in attendance.
Jose Modesto

My engine still doesn't run steady.
I guess I'll have to stay home!

I will be at the DMAA contest on Sunday morning. I am going just to see the Expert\Open cats rock. Hopefully, I will get to meet Bob Gieske for the first time in my life. And maybe even Al Rabe, (I like seeing the "stars" LOL). I will have to leave about 6:00am to get there by 9:00am. I am really hoping the Moon brothers will be there because, I am sick and tired of being the only tall skinny guy.

Put more blood in your alcohol and it will steady out.

Anyone have a list of the entrants? It will be interesting to see who's going to have a go. Thanks.

Wow. That comment even from our distinguished African friends!
Keith............Does this mean you aren't going either?

Proparc, you should have been there last year. Most of those folks are in Muncie.
I had lunch with Bill Werwage at the 12th Street.

That's too bad but, I am going to go anyway and check out the Dallas scene. Were slowly getting it together down here in Austin. If I do get to eventually meet the Texas "big guns", I will be somewhat unique in that, I would have met the "stars" on the East Coast, West Coast, and the Midwest.
-
On site now. In attendance today: Bill Werwage, Bob McDonald, Bob Hunt, Frank McMillen, Keith Trostle, Howard Rush, Rich Oliver, Joe Gilbert, Jeff Traxler, Bill Rich.
A little breezy but most are working the kinks out. Billy tells me he is ground crew this time.
Dave
-
Please say "HI" to Bill for me!
Good luck to all.
-
Dave,
Sounds interesting, so who is actually going to fly for a spot on the team? Seems like we have a lot of "helpers" available there. When do they start official flights?
Has there been any discussion of the "drug testing" and how it will be done at the Worlds?
Best, DennisT
-
Howard here is pitching some props.
-
Dennis, most all us old men would fail with our isms. However we are watching for the strange guy in the dark suit with the Swedish accent and specimen cups. Should he show we'll duct tape him the porta-potty.
Dave
-
Hard at work. Bob shows us his technique.
-
Billy and Bob McDonald.
-
Paul, Bill and all send regards.
-
Bob Hunt brought this nice piece.

Considering our demographic, you must mean cholesterol tests! :)

Trax providing background.

Josias and Orestes are here now.

Bob Hunt brought this nice piece.
I remember this plane of Genes. Does anybody know if I can get the plans to this ship or a pdf?

Matt Neumann on board.

I think it's an homage, not the actual original design (Stunt Machine, probably). Still, given Bob's track record, worth inquiring into.
Brett
-
We were fortunate to have the original model. Bob was able to use existing( Genes) model to create an accurate set of plans. The model was named USA-AMA Gene flew model at the 1970 NATS.
The modeln is currently owned by Ray Moore's wife and is in great condition.
The USA-AMA preceded the stunt machine

This is same the USA-AMA that Gene wind-flew,(amazing) at Flushing Meadows. I remember this ship. Figure eights without the engine! His Stunt Machine came later with the hopped up OS 35S and the flexing landing gear.
Is this guy Classic Legal or just N30?
-
Orestes and electric Shark.
-
Josias putting up one more before dark. Electric Shark.
-
Dave,
Thanks for the updates.
-
Wow. That comment even from our distinguished African friends!
Keith............Does this mean you aren't going either?
Hi Paul, it's more like "ex-tinguished" these days! I'm still thinking about going, but will see if I can make enough bucks to go again. I don't think that Poland will be much better organized than Bulgaria, but I enjoy the seeing all of the people. The US team is always a pleasure to see and of course they are always in contention for the top spots as well. This is why I'm curious to know who's doing the team trials. Thanks to Dave Trible for the updates and pics like those from your Nats!

Is Hunt flying or just hanging out?
Derek
-
Hunt is assistant ED. Not flying, making fun of those who are. Orestes.
-
Thanks for the great pictures and commentary, but are you getting yourself and the plane ready?
-
John I got here about two yesterday and got around 10 flights then. Have 5 in this morning. The airplane is hum min', the pilot......still adjusting. Usually have to draw out tons more fuel here than at home. Did that yesterday on first flight and quit after the verticals. Full tanking now and getting pattern + 8 laps. Haven't had to do much with the needle. Somebody let the oxygen into Muncie for a change.
Did find my take-apart wing flexing too much yesterday- epoxied on to keep it together for the weekend.
-
Bill W. and Bob Mc in consultations. Kenny Stevens has arrived.

Allen and company.

Other than a bit breezy, looks like the weather is cooperating. Looks like fun.
Good luck to the competitors.

A fire just off AMA property. The joke here is somebody was charging their battery packs and........
-
It's gotten a bit warm and windy here. Most have left the field for lunch and rest. Maybe we'll have a little more practice time tonight after the meeting....if not then we are as good to go as we are going to be. The scale masters thing is going on over at site three. We've been getting some bothersome flyovers. Oh well.
-
Hope Joe Gilbert got his engine run issues worked out, everyone in Tulsa is cheering for him.
-
Looks like Howard will have to carry the flag for the west coast. Good luck to him!
-

Joe solved the tank problem-he's fat & sassy. ( well sassy anyway)

Last time I saw Howard we were in Auburn, WA, and I was loading he and Marilou up with fresh veggies from my garden. Alas, no vegetables from outer space (kohlrabi).
I only got to see one flight but thought the new model looked PFG. How it was (temporarily) knocked out of trim is beyond me unless a Brandywine tomato fell on it.
While this is probably not the place for it, be careful in comparing IC engines to electric motors when it comes to best balance point. It would be more accurate to compare balance between two-strokes and electrics.
We came across a similar issue back when fiddling with the Saito 56. The balance point had to go quite a way forward although an inch sounds like a lot and I don't have my setup notes with me.
As far as I know nobody fer-sure figured out why this might be the case although I can assure one and all that a Saito 56-powered Impact set to PW's per-plans balance is not a particularly effective weapon for CL Stunt.

While killing a little time I took my pilgrimage to the museum. I know there many who have never been here or it's been a while so I took some photos for you to enjoy. When I get to the hobby shop I like to see how many of these I've built in my life and boy the memories of each. It's like living it all again. Hope you like.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the pictures of the museum and Hobby Shop. MAN, how I wish there were shops like that still around with those items in stock! LL~
Thanks, also, for the shot of Bob's T-Bird. That was the one used in the WC's. Many years ago I decided to do all the American entries along with the winner from the 1960 and 1962 WC. I still need to do the T-Bird. I did one, but I didn't really know what the real one was painted like. I will have to do a new one of those.
Bill

Thanks Dave, I have been to the states but didn't get the chance to get to Muncie. Really good to see those great museum shots. Regards , Noel.

The pilots meeting is breaking up and the judges meeting getting ready to start. There are 13 brave souls in the herd. We each fly four flights tomorrow on circles 3 and 4 at 8:00 am.
-
Any predictions Dave?
-
Paul, very dangerous territory. Can't say it looks like anyone's cakewalk. Lots of good flying but many have had one issue or another. The weather report I just saw says tomorrow will be near perfect- if not a little dead air at times. Did look like some rain tonight. The last practice tonight was dead air. We'll see. I think there may be a surprise or two.
-
Our pull tester/ pit boss Jeff Traxler is offering bellcrank insurance. He has a rate chart based on pounds pulled.
-
Who are the judges?
-
Mike I don't have a list. I know Mark Overmeyer is head judge. There are a number of qualified folks around but I don't know yet if they came to judge. Denny and David Adamisin are here. ? A number of others. Maybe someone else will chime in.
-
Dave,
Do you have a list of the fliers?
Best, DennisT

I'm trying to figure out who these folks are, since I only recognize Howard from seeing him zip by in his Prieus on the 405. Is that Sparky in front of Howard, or a lookalike? Is Howard the only West Coast persona? :o Steve
-
I'm here as a observer.

Dave,

Dennis I'll put the flyers soon.
-
Today's flight order. Scores will be posted AFTER the flying is complete.
-
About to get underway here. The air is still, bright and sunny. Flyers will be back pedaling thing morning. No matter the outcome today we'll all be able to say we had a great time among friends doing what we love.

Everyone needs to give "Mark O" a great big "Thank You".
He has taken on the Head Judge job at the Nats for quite some time and he knows what he's doing. FAI is even more complicated but I have every confidence in his ability that things will run smoothly and fairly.
Please give recognition to Mark and the judges for their hard work and effort.
(To avoid controversy the thanks should be given at the end of the contest!)
-
I hear that the sole west coast contestant is doing us proud!
Keep it up Howard!
-
Every year I would attend the NATS the museum would be one of the required stops. If we had a hobby shop like that in every town, you think CL would be dead?
-
Today's flying is complete. Not all scores are posted yet but I'll show what we have and update when complete.
-
Some of the other judges, Bob Gieseke, Curt Contrata, Gary McClellan are on circle #3 Mark Overwire and I can't remember the rest.
Perfect weather.

-
And now we have it. Top ten are now drawing for flight order tomorrow.
-
Looks like Orestes is doing his thang.
Howard, Kenny, Matt, Rich and Bob look like they are doing good too. This will be one hell of a contest for the top three spots.
Derek
Edit: and Frank!
-
Go Bobby! You've earned it...
Ward-O
-
The field has cleared. A storm looks to be approaching. Perhaps it will do its thing and we'll be back out for evening practice.
-
Of the 10 qualifiers how many are using electric or 4-strokes ?
-
You go Howard! As Paul said, he is doing us proud!
-
Of the 10 there are no four strokes. The others are even split 5 electric, 5 IC. The remainder were all IC.
-
Frank McMillan is kicking ass TX style! Go district 8!!!
-
Pretty nasty little storm came through. Power out on hotel alley about 3:30 and still out now at 7:00. It layed off enough so now some are venturing back out for practice. Richard, Orestes, Josias, and Joe are out. Sparky, Ron O'Toole and Darrell Harven are out helping?
-
Power back on about 28 minutes ago.

The other judges are Dennis Adamisin and Jim Lynch.
-
Looks like a real shootout! Wish I could've made it, but getting an education is more important...
Good luck to everyone tomorrow!
-
Any juniors flying?
-
No juniors, just geezers.
-
Best of Luck to Joe Gilbert from all the Tulsa Glue Dobbers!!
-
Go get em Howard!
-
Alas,
My current "US dream team" for FAI pleasing flying appears to have abandoned the lists this year. Mssrs. Moon, Barry and Buck are all among the missing. Derek is flying "tons" better than he did in Hungary three years ago, Doug has the whole thing really figured out and Brett has been my personal choice for an FAI contender type for years. I've never done well myself at these affairs but these three show me the sort of precision and style that has beaten me every time I have competed. Maybe if if I tout them loud enuff...oh, wait...it's too late.
Not to worry, we will get a fine team as a result of this weekend's competition. Lot's of talented fliers with the capability of doing well. I'm just disappointed these three gentlemen were unable to join the fray.
Ted
OK, before I go, here's my "wag" based on who's there. Orestes is a lock based on past performance. Howard and Matt, if they're on, have what it takes. My dark horse is Joe Gilbert who showed me a ton of good stuff at our Nats. Frank could also finally earn a well deserved trip across the waves; if he puts all his good stuff together in enough flights he could be a factor. Is the Colonel actually competing? What are the odds of the Bearcat living another year if he should make the team?
Best of luck to everybody. Wish I still had the energy and the right stuff.
-
Ooops. Forgot Bob McDonald who's flown well for as long as I've watched him. If he doesn't get "official flight nerves" he could be there too.
Hmmm. So much for picking the top three. What have I got so far, six? seven?
-
OK, so I didn't see the results of qualifying were already posted before I drank wine and typed the two above. I think my picks are all in the mix so I'll stick with them. Going to be quite a shoot out it looks like.
-
Goodmorning and welcome back to the 2013 US team trials. We just got under way with Orestes first up on circle 4. All flight today will be on this circle. Weather is cool, overcast and near calm wind.
-
The board.
-
Joe Gilbert up now. Had tank problems a couple days ago. Got that fixed. Smokin right along. ROJett .67.
-
Frank McMillin up with Keith Trostle holding. PA .65.
-
Josias up now, electric Shark. 5.19 inverted.
-
...
-
Entering the circle now is Bob McDonald.
-
Bob cranks, Bill Werwage holds.
-
Pretty rounds. 5.44 laps. PA .75.
-
Wind a ferocious 1.3 mph.
-
The intrepid judges panel.
-
Howard on the line. Matt Neumann launches.
-
Got Howard at 5.21. The LED on the fuse side gives an interesting look. Flying smoothly. Absolutely nailed the H8 intersections. Ditto on the V8.
-
Kenny Stevens comes onto the circle. SVE22/ electric. Eric Taylor is his pit man for this flight. Launching downwind. Pressed the juice button and heads to the middle.
-
Kenny a smooth 5.5.
-
He's using the same pretty plane he had at Nats. Great triangles. I see a little more handle movement from Kenny than most. He's got about 5" handle spacing so he's got the throws pretty slow in the plane.
-
Eric Taylor next. Matt again the pit man. This gentleman has come a very long way in a hurry. Expect great things.
-
He's got IC but I don't know what engine.
-
...
-
Eric at work. This pit marker cone is in an interesting place.
-
For you Tucker Special fans, Mr. Ron O'Toole.
-
Richard Oliver up now. RO .67. (What else?). 5.25.
-
Wind at 3.9-5 mph now. Building.
-
Rich another solid flight like all week. Matt now comes on with Ken Stevens the pit.
-
Matt clocks 5.13. This EStuka flys nice. Moving along a little faster than at the Nats.
-
A solid round for Matt to start the day.
-
Round one in. Judges are taking a short break. It's a little cool in the wind. Some are donning jackets.
-
Credit where credit is due.
-
...
-
Matt up and going to start round two.
-
Frank burning in a nice flight with the veteran Cauldron look-like.
-
The sun breaking through for the first time today.
-
Frank not real pleased with this effort but he's got another go.
-
Mr. McDonald up now. The ApogeeV is flying well this weekend.
-
Bobs rounds and squares on the money says me.
-
'Marked' the V8 intersection very well.
-
Back-stepping hard for clover turn 1.
-
Josias armed, Orestes holding.
-
Anticipation.
-
Josias seeing some vertical bobble on level laps in the breeze. It's not bad but maybe getting thermals breaking off the pavement as the sun is warming it.
-
Eric Taylor next. Fires and launches.
-
Well executed wing over. Getting that level flight bobble.
-
A nice flying SV 11. Guessing PA .65.
-
Howard again. Spool up and takeoff. 5.3.
-
Maintained a nice groove inverted, looking for a little lower bottoms. Finding them most of the time.
-
By the look on his face not sure he was pleased with his hourglass-wasn't bad.
-
Joe Gilbert comes on. Colleen is his able helper. Starts inverted. Immediate fire.
-
Exit reverse wing over.
-
H8 over Denny's shoulder.
-
Bob calls the score, daughter records.
-
Curt Contra and Jim Lynch jots it down.
-
Orestes on real-slow start up. Prop turning, Josias already
walking away, airplane hasn't moved yet.
-
Orestes has probably the cleanest corners here today. I don't have the number but this Shark must be very light. I'm jealous.
-
Kenny signals.
-
These overpasses from across the road have
been a little bothersome all week.
-
On one occasion Friday one flyer on 4 found a scale ship at the top of his wing over- maybe 15-20 ft. clearance if that.
-
Rich up again, his lovely bride doing the pit work.
-
...
-
Maybe Richards best all weekend.
-
Howard comes on for his final flight today.
-
Judges pit stop.
-
Shots for Wynn...
-
....
-
...
-
Howard just touching down.
-
Eric turning.
-
Frank and Keith await.
-
Any chance of a peek at the scoreboard?
-
A Kenny's eye view. He's up now.
-
Any chance of a peek at the scoreboard?
No. Thanks for playin.
-
Frank now goes.....just a few more flights Paul....soon.
-
What we have left, Joe going now.
-
Joe's # 2 clover turn.
-
Josias now for his last flight.
-
Josias reverse wing over.
-
Sq. 8.
-
He runs her out of ions and Richard approaches.
-
Rich and reverse wing over.
-
Into the overheads.
-
Nice landing and Matt comes on.
-
...
-
Topping the insides...
-
H8s
-
Entry overheads.
-
Bob McDonald again.

I talked to Tom Knoppi (former F2C team member) the other day, and he said that the WC he went to in Poland was a good contest and well run with a nice facility. But F2B is certainly a different event with different issues (turbulence and judging being critical).
Can hardly wait to hear of Howard's building program plans. #^ Steve

Congrats to all on the team, and to the rest of the top ten for a good competition. Kenny buddy, WAY TO GO!!!
And to you as well, Howard, great to see you make it! Must modify (edit) this as I neglected to also congratulate Orestes! Not an intentional slight, I assure you!!

Congratulations Orestes Howard and Kenny! Best of luck in Poland next year!

I also have enjoyed Dave Trible's play by play at the team trials, and at the NATS. The big problem now is figuring out how to send him to Poland to cover the World Champs! y1 y1 y1 Dave, if I win the lottery, you are going to Poland!
Type at you later,
Dan McEntee

Congrats to Orestes for such good flying, and congrats to Howard and Kenny Stevens for doing so well. Thanks so much to Dave Trible for the coverage and pics. That was great and I reckon that he is now stuck with the job. Going to Poland Dave?? #^

Thank you Keith and all who've sent well wishes. I wish I were going to Poland but as competitor. Alas I didn't get it all working this time for that. Mighty congrats to those who did. Well earned and deserved. In making such a long trip out of the country it could come down to choosing that or my job. I'll make that choice when I actually make the team. Might be the right time then to retire or do something else. For me it's about getting
the parts to my puzzle put together (now that I've finally got them identified) and make that team for Australia. I'll likely make that trip even if I didn't make the team. Have to do that once. I hope someone will substitute for me in Poland and keep us all in the loop. Hope everyone made the trip safely home. Sure glad I once again got some 'family time' with everyone.

Congratulations Orestes, Howard, and Kenny. Well Done!

Congratulation all, see you in Poland :- )))

Thank you Dave for the reporting and making us feel as if we were there. Congrats go to the team members for their effort. Also I don't want to forget those that did enter and compete. A lot had to be learned/experienced from just that. And I agree with Dan if I win the big one Dave would be going with the team so he could keep the world up to date from Poland.
A side note, I have known Howard Rush how many years. Since the days of Swope Park in KC MO. Then he left the area and I only seen him at a Nationals every so often. His event was combat and when I seen he was taking up stunt I knew he was on another trip to fame. Wish him and the team the best in Poland. H^^ H^^ H^^
-
Congratulations to the whole team. We will have to warn the world about Howard though. He might forget where he is going and bring combat ships by mistake.
Looks like a great team that will fine ambassadors.
Richard and Joe came close too.

Thanks to Dave Trible once again, for his wonderful reporting and photos. He is rapidly becoming our "Walter Chronkite" of stunt. y1

Thanks to all well wishers. Every one at the trials this year flew so well . I am so proud of Eric Taylor finishing 9th in this crowd.I was in 7th on Saturday and did not practice because of thunder storms and power outages at the motel Saturday night.I felt like it was not going to happen for me this year and resigned to think about life with out a trip. Bob Hunt wanted so badly to tell me what the scores were during the flying but I did not want to know.I was blown away to see that I was even close. Now for the hard part, for me at least. Choosing a take a part system, building the plane and the box, making it fly well and plan a trip in about 9 months . Kenny P.S. Any thoughts about take apart systems.
-
Congrats Kenny! Very Well done.
Good luck to the entire team.

Great reporting! Good work Orestes, Howard & Kenny! AND... hat's off to my buddy Bill Rich for running the show. As Bill would say, good job, now go practice! LOL!

Kenny.congrats
Talk to Dallas Hanna he has the take apart system for the SV-22 wing. I have two take apart planes that use this system.
If you have any challenges with take apart model you could borrow a Shark from me for the worlds (Electic)

I agree with Jose, the Dallas Hanna version of the Yatsenko hardware looks the best to me. Paul has used the Tom Morris type and his obviously works, too.

I agree with Jose and Brett. If you do decide to use the Dallas Hanna system there are a few changes that I would ask for. I have used his system twice and I do like it. I just have a couple ideas to make it better. Shoot me an email.

I neglected to give a BIG thanks to Dave. Your reporting kept us on the edge of our seats. Great job!
-
Thanks for the coverage, Dave. My phone doesn't have enough G's to follow the news as it happened, but I caught up later.
-
Thanks guys. Howard I really enjoyed your company this week. Congratulations on your finish and look forward to flying with you again next summer.
Dave
Now you are going to have to get wings off that bird. I'm thinking the next time I try that I'm going to make it like Paul did on early Impacts, removing an intact wing with the controls in the wing and cutting the wing just out side the landing gear (in my case) on the outboard panel. I think it will be lighter and less garbage in the middle.

That's an interesting approach. It might enable you to meet the current airline size rules and still have access to the bellcrank and flap controls. Folks tell me, though, that the rigidity of a fuselage that doesn't have the wing cutout helps their score.

I'm sure that's true but I'd hope a good layer of .5 carbon would help. I did a Blue Max like that years ago and it wasn't bad. Didn't use the carbon then.. Not sure but I'm going to try it.

Howard, if you have big knife home, we have big glue here ... you can make something like screw-less take apart system VD~

A little late, but for those who would like to see the scores in Excel ... here you go.

Hi All Dallas had a tree fall through his shop so he is down for a month or so. David Fitz. has a spare for a Thunder Gazer that may work. We will talk tonight and check measurements .

Dave T. I really appreciate your tour of the "new" AMA Museum! It has changed a lot since I visited back in the early '70s.
I hope someone can give more details on the model of the Yates "Madman" in the museum. (who built it. Who supplied the Orwick engine). I think I have color photos or Yates' original model, and my memory of flying with Yates is a bit hazy. I have tried to duplicate his colors, but maybe not accurately.
thanks Floyd Carter

There was a young European Jr at the 1994 WCs who had the division I liked best. The fuse, tail and inboard half of both wings were one piece. Only the outer half (probably more, as Dave suggested, just outside the gear mount) of each wing separated. It could be the fixed span was equal to that of the stab which would alter the planform depending on the AR of the Stab...of course, it could have plug in tips as well if you wanted Les McDonald style glider wing stabs!
I liked the fact that the highest stress areas were really solid, the control system never had to be disassembled and that no significant single screw was likely to result in a demolished airplane. IIRC, the outer panels plugged in like the Hannah, Morris fixtures and were held in place with fore and aft keys and a couple of 4-40 (or metric equivalent) screws and blind nuts.
I'm unsure on whether it would meet current airline regs but the max dimension was much less than the classic 60" or so span.

Floyd, I think the Madman was built and donated by Don Hutchinson but don't quote me...oh wait, I just published it. Alas.

Unfortunately, the 62" baggage allowance forces the wing to come in half at the root and the fuse must splice somewhere as well. Also, the stab must remove to fit in the remainder of the space that the fuse, wing etc don't take.
Or, if you are bloddy rich, just ship a one piece airplane by air. Won't cost too much. ;DAfter all, the F1 teams do it all the time to go to all the various world F1 sites. If they can do that, why not you?

I have seen 4 wakefields in a box 1/3 the volume of a stunt plane box, that makes it somewhat cheaper.
I still don't see how you get batteries to Poland (or anywhere past the TSA checkpoint)

Even later but here is Mike's table in rank order. Makes it a little easier to compare how the scores sort out.

Batteries, TSA, no problem!
I was concerned about that going to Bulgaria, and had 2 shipped ahead. Much $$$$$. I then took one in carry on. No issue with TSA as it was packed per their instructions.
Being bold, I brought all three back as carry on. They all made it home. I saw it on the scanner in Paris. No concern about a battery with wires sticking out of it!!
I would suggest that each team member ship at least one battery ahead and carry on the rest.
-
This is what I used which meant the box is as long as the fuz less rudder. Sorry about just the link to another forum but.!!

Was easy to transport to UK from OZ back in 2008 without any problems. Model is about 62" span.

In the 'good old days' did we ever imagine that international competition with model airplanes would become so @#$%&$ complicated?
It's a weird world out there...and becoming worse every day, it seems.

Floyd,
Tom Lay can give you the particulars on the Yates Madman at the AMA museum. I am pretty sure the colors on that model in the museum is close to what JC had on the originals. Cream trimmed in maroon.

Here are pictures of the F2B team and of Orestes, who won by a wide margin.

Because of custom and VAT. There is a way to order batteries here ... for example from european hobbyking store, then it comes without troubles and cheap. I can do it if anyone wants.

I think if it were me I would use Igor's idea.
I noticed just recently when I go to the post office that they are now specifically asking if I am shipping Lipos. They have always done the "liquid, perishable, flammable, questions. They just added lipo to the list. I have not asked what would happen if I were shipping one.

I believe they would restrict you to Ground Shipping.

The Madman in the museum at Muncie did not come from me. I think it was actually J.C. Yates model. I believe Bob Whitely had it for a while before it went to the museum.

Paul I'm still thinking it would work but would require a separate box for the wing. Maybe the extra box is cost prohibitive, not sure. Maybe you could cram your extra socks in there. Might make some cardboard mock ups to see. Guess you could part BOTH wings out a few inches from the fuse if that were any better. Thinking ......

You might want to ask the F3B and F3F (3-4 meter sailplanes) guys how they're doing it these days. When we went to Slovakia we used Hard case, length adjustable, Golf Bags. The wings on those are two panel or three panel and the one piece fuselages are 59" -65" in length. Weight is 60-85 oz. RTF (without ballast) depending on class and each pilot generally takes two complete airplanes (in one golf bag).
Just a thought H^^
