Title: U REELY HANDLE
Post by: Bob Disharoon on October 06, 2007, 10:08:09 AM
Quick question: How do you tell if a U Reely is the older bakelite version or the later plastic version. In spite of myself,I now collect them. Many of them have little differences from one to the other. I'm sure someone can solve this one..you guys have never let me down so far  H^^.....thanks, Bob

pour a little hot water over a spot on the handle if it smells lightly of formaldehyde is Bakelite .  Salty works too.

Thanks, guys. I think I'll do the water trick rather than lick it.

I have two reel up handles that say Shimizu Mokei on them, they come apart in the middle and snap together, can't figure out how to use them for both flyin and reelin. Anyone know of these handles? Guess i might try one just to reel up lines on, the handle part is a little small for my knotted up hands.  Looks like they could work on a fly rod! :)    Ray C

Did you buy em on Ebay last week?  Cause if you did the guy you got em from, got them from me on Ebay about a year ago.  I got em from some other guy on Ebay a few weeks before that.  They were with a bunch of other odd Asian origin stuff, props, tanks, etc.  I gave the reels a once over and decided that there are safer, more comfortable handles (even for 1/2a) and that they'd probably damage the lines pretty easily.  I ended up selling the pair I had with a bunch of other 'airplane graveyard' type stuff and saw nearly all of it back out on ebay last week, I'm still not sure which part the buyer was after.  Shimizu Mokei translates to springtime model, other then that I couldn't find anything on them anywhere.  Collectors item?  The ebay collectors didn't think so.

Yep, came from e-bay, along with some 1/2a handles and bellcranks. I think the handles i like are Testors brand, great feeling handle , just too thin and breakable, but give great action for small planes.  Why can't someone make something that suits me??    Thanks for the info.  Ray

Sweet.  I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure the bellcranks were in the batch of stuff I sold too.  Funny how some stuff goes in circles on ebay.

I remember a spool/handle combo kinda like that shimizu thingy from when I was a ute (I'm a fan of "My Cousin Vinnie"). The handle clipped in/out of the center part of the spool part. About a 10" diameter spool, white nylon. I liked the handle ok, but the spool was kinda big and bulky. I suspect it was Sullivan or Darr or somebody like that.
I'd like to see a picture of one like it, at least. Big Iron got some? De Hill? Who else collect CL handles? n~ Steve

I thought I had found something that was Bakelite one time, it tasted salty. I kept on tasting it. I began to feel funny. Finally someone told me it was  margaritas.
