« on: August 07, 2011, 03:47:16 PM »
This is to inform everyone that the "New York Controline Stunt Team" will in fact be having the "Joe Ortiz Memorial Stunt Bash" on Sunday, September 25th at the "Flushing Meadows Corona Park" Model Flying Field. We hope to have the pilots meeting at about 9 AM with the flying immediately after that. We will be having PAMPA Stunt for Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert with trophy plaques to 3rd Place. There will also be ARF Stunt with all classes combined. The pilots will also vote for a "Concourse de' Elegance" trophy for the best looking Stunt Ship there. The entrance to the Park for the Fling Field is off the Van Wyck Expressway. The flying field will be to your left with the Meadows Lake in the background. There will be Porta John facilities for the contestants use at the field. Safety things will be required for all contestants.
If yo have any questions please give me a call on my Cell: 1-646-288-6634.

Looking forward to seeing you all there on the 25th of September.
Thanks and Happy Flying,

Is there an exit to look for off the Van Wyck? Finally I found the flying site on a satellite map. Two concrete circles and two grass circles? Guess this means field is on the left if we are going North on the Van Wyck. What's the access road to the field? I see the Van Wyck clear enough on the Satellite Map, but do not see entrances and exits. Google estimates an 18 minute travel time from the apartment where I stay in NYC on Grand and Essex in Manhattan. Guess that means a good 45 minutes anytime other than 4am.

Going north you would take the College Point BLVD exit. Follow that and at the first opportunity take a left to go under the highway and head back in the other dierction back towards the site. Once heading back in the other direction there will be a ramp on the right that takes you into the park. Make a right onto the ramp and then a left at the T that road will take you right up to the circles. College Point Blvd is the exit after Jewel AVE if I remember correctly. I can see it in my head, but it's been 20 years or so since I've been.

Thanks. This looks kinda clear and makes sense. Circle Burners. How did folks get there before Satellite Imagining. Besides it's often said that Golem live in that River. No telling what lives in the lake.

I remember my dad and I driving around in circles for a while the first time we tried to find the way in. Back the you had to park in the lot and walk from there. You were not allowed to park along side of the road. As far as whats in the lake ask Tony Soprano.

Hey Dennis,

The directions that Peter Nevai gave you are correct. When you get off at the College Point Blv'd exit going North, a few hundred feet up on the left you will see a feed in bridge ramp from the park and right after that also on the left is a "Turn Around" which will take you Sough on the Service Road. Stay to you right and the entrance to the Park is on your right. Go to Stop Sign and make a left and the Flying Circles are there surrounded by an 8 foot cyclone fence. Look forward to seeing you.

Cheers,

By hook or crook I will be there, I am hoping to have my Pathfinder LE done in time and may try my hand at beginner. Been over 30 years since I entered a competition. The biggest uncertainty is if I'll have a car up here by that time. Planning to ship a vehicle up from FLA. but that may not happen until October. If that's the case I am at a loss as to how I'll be able to shlep all the stuff to the park. The model is not the biggest concern as I can get that on the LIRR. The gallon of fuel may be a whole other issue as I do not believe that carrying highly flamable liquids on public transportation is allowed, besides fuel is heavy. The rest of the stuff I can jam into the pockets of my ACU's, or back pack.

Of course this is all contingent upon not being shipped out to some war zone or other distant country on company contract.

The Joe Ortiz contest was held today and was a great time, with a good turnout. The NYC Parks Dept.did an outstanding tune up on the field, we have blacktop where grass was growing, a new bench, and new USA flag.    Thanks to all especially the judges as when the sun came out it was hot. :) :) :)

Had a tech proposal that had to be in COB Monday. Worked through the weekend to get it done. Besides the planes not done yet. Good looking group there BTW. Glad the weather held out for you.
