Tyvek Hinges
« on: February 07, 2018, 12:10:14 PM »
Has anyone actually USED the Tyvek hinges that Brodak includes in their ARF/ARCs?

How about Failure rate?

Spoke with a RC guy with a 6' wingspan Biplane and he uses them....says the are real strong.
Just curious
Thanks

:) Yes, I've used them.  Can't tell you about failure rate since I've not had one fail!  ;D

Is this a special Tyvek or something?  Was just wondering, cause you can go to any job site and pick up fairly large pieces of cast offs for nothing. H^^

I am not asking about cut up Postal supplies, but rather the hinges that come in ARFs from Brodak...

I have been using them routinely for a few year now from several sources except USPS envelopes - work fine and are durable.  They are also very easy to tape or 'cote over for gap seals.

Are the Brodak Tyvek hinges the same thickness as USPS Tyvek envelope material?

All the various versions of CA type hinges I get in kits or deliberately as a package never seemed to me anything close to Tyvek

I know some have experiment with alternative hing materiel for 1/2a with Tyvek and other meteriels

But in this context and Peabody's other posts on ARC ARFs...I sensuously doubt the materiel is Tyvek...I have always seen them described as CA hinges

And truth is I use them some times but prefer pinned hinges...have no earthly idea what material CA hinges are tho

They may NOT be Tyvek....that's just what someone called them when we first encountered them...
The guys with the big RC planes call them Tyvek or fabric.

The hinges that came with my Oriental ARF were regular white CA hinges. Definitely not Tyvek. I have used the tyvek P.O. envelopes as hinge material on many foamies though. Works very well and is very tough.

Can't believe I am the only one with a "mic".  ;-)

Dunno about the Brodak parts, but I bought a Sig Skyray that came with the kit CA hinges, and they worked well.  They certainly outlasted the plane, but given that I was flying Beginner and then Intermediate at the time, that wasn't saying much.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.
