Rescued Nobler
« on: March 16, 2019, 03:39:40 PM »
Found this oldie on an online site that a guy posted on with some Rc planes.

He was going to toss this but I offered $40 for it and went on my way to retrieve it.

Flaps are duct taped on. Needs a good bit of TLC.

Has a OS Max-1 .35 in it thats held on with a wood screw.

Should be a fun project.  But does anyone recognize the AMA number?

***** it weighs 51.2oz!!!!!!

Nose is covered in fiberglass. But least the motor has great compression lol. That landing gear tho..hmmm.

Well I can see where alot of the weight came from.

No tipweight box as the wingtip is solid block.

This aughta be fun!

Might fly OK without working flaps.  Your choice.

I hope the journey and effort are fun, but honestly, it looks like a lot of work for the eventual outcome.
Laser-cut, "Ted Fancher Precision-Pro" Hard Point Handle Kits are available again.  PM for info.

If that old nylon TF prop is any indication of when last flown it was before ca glue. Some of the old glues get real brittle over time so you may want to consider re-gluing to be safe.

Most old models  built like that have very very poor control systems that fail on the third flight after you rebuild it.

I believe it. Thats why Im considering just patching the holes, clean it up, and putting a busted Fox in the nose and hang it on the wall.

For the age it looks with that old of a AMA number. Id hate to smash up a piece of history.

For as old as it is. Who knows the history of it. Who knows if it may have won a few contests or maybe it was the only stunter of a pilot who only got to fly alone.

Just not worth risking a crash on something I consider historical and nostalgic.

I love this hobby :)

I just wish I knew who it belonged too.

I've kind of got the same addiction, the old "barn finds" are always interesting.

James I would take it all apart. Nobler bodies are easy to build. I started building the Nobler kits in 1957. The bodies wore out  and I had wings left over. You can check out the controls and build a new body . Keep it simple. Use cloth hinges and a ball link control system. I see people build new noses on crashed models but a new body is quick and easy to build and last much longer.

Hi Jamie
Hope you find the name of the builder or some history of the model. I have rebuilt many old models often to preserve memories of the original builder . Often it involves a silly amount of work where it would have been easier to start  a fresh but that would then be only a replica without that history. With old cars people often try preserve that aged look or patina to give the vehicle the look of a genuine old car and not a copy.

As has been said the glues joints have dried out and weakened, the wood is oil soaked and the original controls system was probably poor by today's standards but by the look of it it did fly (a lot) and bringing it back to life can help you experience how it flew back then and keep some memories alive.
One old model I bought came apart in flight (OS 35 power too) which was caused as I failed to spot a fatal error in construction and gave it a maiden flight about 40 years after it was originally built! Sometimes that old rescued model can be full of pleasant surprises too especially when the original owner/builder find its still alive and flying .

Regards Gerald

Ty is right on about the plane and the CD numbers.  I had 4234 or something close in 1955.I didn't renew for a couple of years and got 53308 in 1974. I became a CD for the second time in 2003 and got 8033. I think Bill Werwage number is 5 digits and it goes back to the mid 1950's

~^NOTE  ~^ Most models from around 1970 or earlier will have water slide off decals those look like vinyl
