First pattern flown on my new Oriental

After months of on and off work on it, I finally got it trimmed and flew some patterns. It's using an OS .40fp(ABN) with an APC 10.5x4.5 prop and a tongue muffler from Eric Rule, pressure tapped to the uniflow vent.
Here she is:

And it looks like for the first time I will be prepared. In the past, I've always showed up with unknown quantities in either equipment, skills, or both. I think you pitted for me on the best pattern I ever flew up there, in Profile on Saturday last October. Profile is my favorite event. I'll probably bring a Ukey for that one this year, since I've destroyed both of my Skyrays, your old one, code named DirtyBird, and the beautiful but poorly trimmed Osprey. DirtyBird met its demise on the one year anniversary of when you gave it to me. At Watt's field after the contest. I still feel sick over that one. I just had to fly. Dumb decision. It was my most competent stunter until now. I'm really pleased with this Oriental.

I'm looking forward to the contests at H'ville and two Saturdays later, Triple Tree on the last day of Joe Nall.

Very nice, looks brilliant and flies great. Just a question on the engine, how do you get it to go like that? I've a good condition FP40 which runs away every time. I'd love to know how to get it to run like that.

Nothing like a maiden pattern! That Oriental had good corners and I think is going to do well for you and for sure improve the pattern. Great engine run too. Good to see you uot and hear Wayne too.

Dan, thanks for the compliments. My cool black spinner just arrived in the mail today, and I hope it doesn't change anything to do with the engine cooling. That FP is an ABN version, but I don't know if that is relevant to your question or not. As mentioned above, I'm using an APC 10.5"x4.5" prop, an Enya #3 glow plug, tongue muffler from Eric Rule, pressure tapped to the uniflow vent. And Powermaster 10/22 fuel. I believe the venturi is about .257", small. My field at Fort Jackson is somewhere around 470' above sea level. This engine is fairly easy to prime and crank, though I'm completely new to dealing with inverted engines.

My setup came mostly from advice from a helpful couple of Philly Fliers. Between the two, they are very familiar with the power plant and the airframe. I can thank them for the great engine performance. I have listened to it in the video, and the engine really stays on song right up till I started freelancing stunts after the pattern. That's a bad habit I should probably be flogged for. The cowl on this plane completely exposes the cylinder, which could help hold off the runaway. We'll see how she runs when the temps hit 100. If it starts overheating when I put the spinner on, I'll have to look at cooling options. Beginners luck? Very possibly why it runs so good.

Hi Shug, good to see you getting out to the field too. I hope you guys can find a place to fly this summer.
Those bottom corners have always been horrible and bouncy for me, especially in the outside square. The Oriental has helped me with that. And this is the first time I've had a really competent stunter since I was flying Beginner patterns with a Skyray, so maybe a little consistency will smooth things like that out.

Definitely hope to see you in the Fall too. Judging from what I see on the tube, you'll be flying in a higher bracket this time around. That'll be good for me Lol.

Advice to runaway. Duplicate Rusty's setup. Good place to start. Sounds like you are setting engine too slow. Must be running Healthy 2-stroke on the ground. There's a false sweet spot sounds great on ground but engine speeds up in air and goes much faster. Runaway. Try setting engine faster. Run should stabilize.

Rusty, one great looking Oriental there, but I see you just had to put grass stains on it(top side).   Now you have something to work with and trim out.  Just remember to just do the two out side loops after the two level laps at the end.   I usually get about 10 level alps at the end of my pattern and I don't worry about the out side loops.  At least you didn't panic when the engine quit.

Yeah, there's one o' them guys I was talking about. The other one's name is Ken. I just did what they told me and I bumbled right into the sweet spot. I got a lot of help from Ken Cook shoring up the airframe. He and Dennis pretty much gave me the same tips on the FP. The hot Enya Glow plug is an odd little thing, and the APC prop was way off my radar.

Hi Doc. Yeah, I didn't panic, but I should have never gotten into that situation. I'm too damn cool for my own good. Wayne's been trying to straighten me out for some time. Okay, I'm getting the message. In the few years we've been flying together, I have never once seen him put a plane into the ground any other way than rolling. I've done it plenty of times.
