plans from flying models
« on: December 23, 2014, 11:24:18 AM »

I have seen blurbs saying that F/M plans are available, but not where to get them, and if the plans list is available from F/M with all the info, as to price, where to send money, and other info.

 Thanks a lot...

Thanks Ty, and Merry CHRISTmas, I am looking for the Pegasus by Bob Howard, the model came out in the middle sixty's if memory serves.
I don't have a plan number, but this is the mane of the model.
 Again thanks...

Hi Gil. What plan(s) do you need?  I got lots. Let me know. Ty H^^

There was a plan for a Spirit of St. Louis from around 1980 that I've always wanted to order someday.  You happen to have that one?

There are at least 2 sets of plans for the Howard Pegasus. The original from FM and the revised by Tom Dixon published several years later. Dixon has corrected some errors in the original plan so I recommend you get his.

There wasn't really any real problems with the FM plans.  I built mine in 2002 and the model was greatly received at the 2003 VSC.  There are some photos of my Pegasus in the stunt grunt thread on this site under heading about Bob Howard.  I don't know why anyone would think that Dixon's plans are any better.

Wasn't it Dixon who had a Pegasus at Brodaks a few years ago?  It is really a beautiful airplane.  Someday I want o build one.

I'll have to look at them when I get back home in a week, I seem to recall something about a wing rib, but I know there were a couple of little adjustments.

On Outerzone, a search finds about 300 plans with "Flying Models" in the description.

No Pegasus, though.

Howdy,

If anyone is looking for a digital image of the plans for the 1968/1969 CL Stunt Ship Pegasus, I can email that to you. It prints to full size and they are accurate so you can build directly from them. Pegasus plans may also still be available from Flying Models.

Thanks,

At the moment, NOTHING is available from Flying Models.
Carstens Publicatons, Inc. closed permanently on Friday, August 22, 2014.

In my opinion, the best one can do with any plan from them, now, is to ensure its preservation by submitting it to one or more of the sites that offer plans for free download.

Is this the same one Bob?  What year did it appear?  Someone in our group here built one last year but I can't remember details of it.

Thanks Bob for making your plans available. I still have that FM mag with the picture of you and your airplane. Tom Dixon flew one for several years and did well with it. He told me I was the only guy who new what his plane was. I also flew at FF contests with Fast Richard.

Yes that definitely is the Pegasus that got me 1st and then 2nd in senior in 1968 and 1969 respectively (the article is incorrect on that, lol  javascript:void(0);. I'll be happy to email the hi-res file to anyone and the free plan services. Since I'm just back this year, what are the services I should send them to?

Insofar as accuracy, there certainly may be an inaccuracy somewhere, though I've built from from these plans since then  and didn't find any myself. But I'm no Tom Dixon either, that's for sure!

Thanks All,

Bob

Just wonder if AMA would take over the plans like they did with Northrop's Model Builder plans.

Hey Eddy:

That's what Dixon said to me at Brodaks when I recognized his Pegasus!

I'd like to see Bob put his file on Outerzone so it is available to everyone.  AMA will just squirrel it away someplace and then ask a fortune for a copy.  Its a beautiful plane and I wish more people would get a chance to build one!

Hi John,

Nope, I just sent them over today so they are not up on their site yet I'm sure.

I also learned today from speaking with Tom Dixon about engines that he worked with Flying Models to republish the Pegasus plans as redrawn by Tom. These are not available thru FM any more but Tom does have them and sells them as part of his plan service. It may be that the stab on these plans is a bit longer, but that would have to be checked.

Thanks,

Bob

Found the article which mentions the accuracy of the original plan 11/69FM; left out the slots in the ribs for the d-tube spar and the side view and top view of the fuselage showed differing former locations. Corrected by Tom Dixon in FM 01/08. Still an impressive aircraft!

Here is the first page from the article. I had not looked at this magazine in 10 years but I remembered the name mentioned in the article Dick Mathis. I called him Fast Richard as that is what many called him in FF circles. Then I flipped over to page 23 and there is a FF article by Fast Richard. I hadn't remembered that article being in the same magazine. I thought the Pegasus article used the name Fast Richard but it was Dick Mathis, same person but different names.

Hello All,

Yesterday I ordered a motor from Tom Dixon and we talked about the Pegasus plans. Apparently I was wrong. I am so sorry. The plans that were originally published in FM DID have errors in the rib placements on the spars. I never noticed that before. The ribs should all be exactly the same distance apart from each other and both wings are identical, the only difference is that the outboard last rib is 1 inch closer to the belcrank than the last rib on the inboard wing. So outboard is 1 inch shorter but no other difference. Ribs should otherwise be the same distance apart between the inboard and outboard wing. There was also a comment about the formers being in the wrong place. That could be true. I don't know about that.

So I wanted you to know about the spar issue before building one. Your best option is to order the corrected plans from Tom Dixon directly. The plans I sent you are exactly the dimensions of the original as to the wing shape, areas, moment arms, thrust lines, etc. Its very true to the original except for the drawing mistake on the spar I mentioned.

My apologies to everyone for not looking into this more closely before sending out plans.

Bob

Yes indeed, the differences are subtle. I ordered both sets of plans from FM before they closed and also a copy of the
Tom Dixon article.
I didn't see the differences until after I read Tom's article, (and I have spent many hours searching out errors on the earlier magazine plans over the years as much of my building was from manually scaled up magazine plans.)
Still a great model!!
