Hey, Folks!
In an attempt to promote CL and create a benchmark for the most Ringmasters(any type) flown in a 48hr period, check out and participate with us! Here's the link to the calendar and rules info:

My son and I just wrecked ours in a mid air collision the other night. I have one partially taking shape, while the other is quite damaged

We should have both planes in the air in the next 2 weeks

Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon 2008

The Brotherhood of the Ring is sponsoring its 1st Fly-A-Thon event the first weekend of October-

October 4th & 5th, 2008

Matt Kania’s beloved Ringmaster control line model has been built and flown by more modelers than any other control line model airplane,maybe ever!

This is not a contest! There are no entry fees or prizes! This Fly-A-Thon is to honor the most popular CL model ever!!
Our goal is to make history by having more Ringmasters fly, and to make more Ringmaster flights in one weekend than ever before. This event is open to all participants-worldwide!

On October 4 & 5, we challenge you to fly any one or more of the many Ringmasters,old or new, and report your flights to: ringmasterflyathon-2008@yahoo.com

Deadline for reporting is 12:00 noon Eastern Daylight time (USA) Tuesday October 7, 2008.
Location: Wherever you are!

Please report how many different Ringmasters flew, how many total Ringmaster flights were made and the location of these flights.

You may also report how many different pilots flew, how many Ringmasters were flown at the same time and what type of Ringmasters were flown.

Also, if you get someone new to solo on a Ringmaster, that flight will count as 2 flights! The more, the merrier!Let us know how many new solo flights we have too! If this will help promote new flyers by flying the same plane so many of us started with, this would be a bonus!

Let's keep the spirit of C/L alive!

Hi Richard,
Ken is a member of the Philly fliers. Between Ken, his son Shawn and the rest of us we have lost (we always fix Ringmasters, so lost may not be the right word) 6 Ringmasters in the past two weeks. Here is the carnage from our Labor day picnic. Look carfully, there is four airplanes in that pile.

Anyone have advice on putting together my first Ringmaster, a kit from RSM. No instructions with kit, just a layout. Where to start or little changes? Any advice would be helpful, just now cutting the parts out. Thanks,, Ray

Tom,
Fixed is a relative term. We should specify they need to be flying models, not display models.

Tom upped the weight to 42+ oz after he repaired it the last time, even though he tells us he took weight out.

It also came back with a Corsair inboard wing and a Ringmaster outboard wing. Oh well, it made for some funny flights? and even more good stories! I am going to stop talking now or I may never see my (Jack Westons) Ringmaster again.

Palko is a fiendish Ringmaster wrecker. Three line flat spins. Violent full power wingovers with no pullout. He gets that gleam in his eye, laughs uncontrollably, shortly after kerpow. What can I say? We all know that you're the one with the problem. The first step to recovery is admittance. When your ready to put away the sponge nose ARF's let us know! I am worried about you Dennis! Your suffering from over exposure. Your hands shake like your airplanes. It may be to late? Part of the reason your so upset is because deep down you know the shiny round cans on the nose's of my airplanes can fix your problem. If you can't give up ARF's maybe we can convert you? Electric isn't all bad......

On a more positive note we flew more Ring-A-Dings today. The result was the same as last weekend. Four pieces! The really bad part was that Tom refused to take it home this time.

Here is a picture of a trim problem that showed up after Tom's repairs. It now flies KNIFE EDGE!!!! Who knows........

Admittedly, an S-1 is badly engineered, flies poorly when built from a Sterling kit, is homelier than a home-made mud pie, etc. but the S-1A answered everything other than the homeliness, and various specialty kit versions available now are still better (mostly) than that one was. What's to hate? Its looks? Its inefficient airfoil?

Not sure how many Tulsa will be able to get together that weekend, would guess 4 or 5 at least, probably more. Think most everyone in the club has a Ringmaster (or two) and if not we can probably come up with a couple loaners.

You can bad mouth the old Sterling kits all you want, but, in the day we were in seventh heaven until we saw a Firecat. The down side was it cost a dollar more. Also I don't remember Ringmasters coming apart when Sterling instructions were followed, The other thing is we only had Testors, Comet and Ambroid glue to work with, also no fiber glas. As far as the flight capability of the Ringmaster S1, I've seen them place second or third in Old Time at Brodak year after year. Jack Weston, Dan Banjok and others have demonstrated these Sterling kits are competitive. Usually flea market specials at that. At times even heavier than the usual Sterling kit, since they've been crashed and stuck together (often by Mike Palko) so many times. Could have been the lucky chicken bone used to locate the tank. But I doubt it. Last year I think Dennis Truxal got a first at Brodak in Intermediate Classic, flying an S1 powered by a stock Fox 35. Dennis' corners were shockingly square. Got me how he made the thin airfoil plane simulate 90 degrees. Many of us in the Philly Flyers have thought about building a super light version of the S1 that conforms to the original outline, but so far the S1 iron wood Sterling birds seems to work well enough.

And Patrick Gibson won senior at the NATS this year with a Ringmaster! It sure is still doing it over and over again, for such a poor design, as some "experts" have said here! Have fun!

Why try to misrepresent the S1? Just about any other popular kit for a plane roughly the same size can be made to perform equal or better to the S1. Sure a Ringmaster took first in Senior, but then it was the only plane flying in that class... Any plane could receive the same praise under those circumstances.

At Brodak 2008:
Dennis Truxal was 4th in Intermediate Classic using an S1. Finishing ahead of many accomplished fliers flying much more sophisticated models.

In Old Time Expert:
Ringmasters finished 1,3,4,8.

Some of those no doubt were Ringers, built light. Some were not. At least one was a flea market purchase. Heavy, but straight, powered by a stock fox 35. In any case a light Ring-a-ding that fits OTS rules doesn't require brilliant design and expert craftsmanship.

I couldn't access the results of past Fly-ins. But trusting my untrustworthy memory, I believe that in years past Jack Weston and Dan Banjok finished 2nd or 3rd with regularity in OT Expert and Advanced. Their weapon of choice a flea market special Sterling S1 powered by a stock fox 35.

The Old Time pattern is of course suited to the thin winged early 1950s wonder. Most of the the maneuvers are round. They're also big. An Impact or Patternmaster would be overkill plus. Nevertheless OT Noblers (with the excess wing offset), Smoothies and the like are legal. John Saunders won OT Expert at Brodak many years in a row, flying a HUM ONGUS. A more versatile model, with a better airfoil and full fues. In this class, nevertheless, S1s are usually good enough.

On the other hand Phil Spillman was an annoying pain the butt for years womping most folks in Advanced at Brodak, flying a legit Sterling Mustang. An S1 contemporary. Also, legal in OTS.

No one's misrepresenting the S1, Brother Drew..The point is that the S1 is still winning contests after 57 years. New kits come and go, and sure, you can turn almost any bummer into a hummer; the point is that it's still winning, and also at the NATS- somewhat.. The plane that won the Senior NATS was actually a foam wing/ modified airfoil(Pat J.) on a S1 fuse/tail group. Not a S1 RSM or Sterling version.I hope to get a great report from you on Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon weekend!

I've got a Baby, Jr. and a S-1 ready to go, and a "probable" for participation by my buddy Tom. Tom has a S-1 also so we may get 4 different Rings up total. If he can't make it I'll rope in somebody to launch, and maybe even get their 1st flight in.

Just got back from the garage- found a Beginner Ringmaster buried at the back of the 1/2A shelf. Looks like it has tail feathers from a CG Lil' Toot Biplane, but i'll find some 1/8" in the scrap box and knock a set of correct shaped pieces. I'll get a pic of all 4 before / after the fun begins.
