We have .35 and .40 Redheads. (complete)

Does the 40 red head have same case as the 35 ?

I'll have to go out to the field tomorrow and look at the engines; they haven't been priced yet. Then I'll send you a private message about the prices.

Mickey was a student of mine back in the late 1960's.

Just to answer the question -the .35 and .40 are interchangeable in an airplane and I have to look for the number to know which I have in my hand. Pretty sure the .29 is too though I haven't thought to try it. You wouldn't tell much difference running them though the .40s always seemed to be fit a little better and so seemed more consistent one engine to another. The center plug .35s all seemed as good. Most all the .19s through the Series .21s seemed to be fit way too loose. IF you can get them started they run well but they are definitely in a smaller case.

So whats the difference between the center plug and the slant plug, anything other than the head. Seems like the ones I bought as a teenager for $5.95 were all the slant plug.

I believe the difference was the involvement of Dick McCoy. The center vertical plug engines were made under his ownership and supervision to good tolerances. He sold ownership to the Duromatic corporation who slanted the plug I presume to distinguish the change. They chose looser mass production standards and fits which led to slightly inferior engines though they can run very well if they will start for you. The 'Custom' series came with another change in ownership with even worse results. Finally Testor corporation took over with the original design numbers internally but ditched the cintered iron piston and went with an aluminum piston and Dykes ring along with an entirely new case and called them Series 21. These are actually very good and long lasting Stunt engines except for the .19s which suffered the poor dimensional fits that all the .19s did.

Many years ago, Wild Bill Netzeband told me That He was working at Testor's when the series 21 engine was designed. He said that he designed the innards ( a slight redesign of the Red Head McCoys), and the people running Testor's at that time hired an industrial designer to do the outside of the engine. It was supposed to look whoopy, and no consideration was given to weight. The result was the Series 21 McCoy. It ran ok, but was heavier than it should have been.

A lot of Lightning Bolt McCoy Red Heads have been modified with Series 21 Pistons. The Lightning Bolt Redhead cylinders are used because they have windows on the ports. Without the ports, the Dyke ring would get stuck in the wide open ports on the earlier Redheads.

I went out to the field today and found that we had contestants who had arrived yesterday, John Blanchard, and Brent and Jackie Rogillio from Louisiana were out at the field trimming airplanes with Joe Gilbert. Tom Martin showed up with a whole lotta airplane stuff. He is selling out , and the stuff is cheap! Before I left, Joe told me that he got phone calls from Dale and Linda Gleason, and Don and Sheila Cranfill. they were getting close to the field.
I left after 2pm, and passed Elwyn Aud as He arrived.

As I will not make it again this year I have been looking at the Web Cam. So far nobody flying on the main circle but a half dozen vehicles sitting there. Also shows 85+ degrees and 14+ mph wind. Any way you all have fun.

Doc it's pretty windy here. They are going to bring dinner out here to the field tonight so everybody can hang out here when the wind lays down. So far aside from the local guys Dale Gleason, Don Cranfield, Frank McMillin, Bob Brookins, Lou Woolard and ourselves are at the field.

Fast and Furious! After a pile of nachos and deserts for dinner the wind broke at 6:30 and we had one hour of Stunt weather. Everybody ran for the planes to get one flight for the day.

Glad to see you guys are having what seems to be a good turnout for your contest. The third weekend after Labor Day has been the traditional date for the Carl Marchenke Memorial contest here in Tucson and is again this year as last year and so forth.
Turnout this year and last year has been very poor and it would seem that the contest held there on those traditional dates could be part of the problem.
It would seem that we could do a little better job of coordinating contest dates in the Southwest area so as more could attend both contests. I'm sure after this the Cholla Choppers will be rethinking contest dates even though this has been a traditional contest for this club for approximately 30 years or so!

The web site shows stunt heaven but every body must be eating. Will check again later as have been helping/hindering the wife with new dish washer. She doesn't like the way I do dishes and I don't break any.

Finished the profile and yes it's lunch- soup and sandwiches at the field. Here's the scoreboard. The wind picked up some and is at the go-no go point. We'll likely try to get some practice in then I think it's the Mexican restaurant tonight for many of this herd.

Looks like the 'Dobber's are again hosting a superb contest. I didn't have the available time (vacation days) to be at this event along with the upcoming Combat Legends weekend in October.

Thanks for all the great pictures. Sure miss being there. I am hoping to get off of the Prednisone in a few weeks after almost a year. Hoping my back will get better then. Congrats to Gary Mondry for wining old time.
