In SoCal for a long weekend what to do?
« on: August 16, 2015, 07:07:42 AM »
I will be in Long beach area Sept 10- 13 visiting friends.  Some time to kill looking for Model aviation/ full scale related stuff to do.
Will be up in Beverly Hills area on  Sept 11.

Always used to got up to T&A hobby and spend some money there, have been up to Chino, but may go back, its been a while.

Looking for good Hobby/ surplus (test equipment, electronics, machining)/ swap meets/ Aircraft museums.

Since I go to Oshkosh every year, looking for the good museums, not 2 jets parked outside.

There are two museums at the Chino airport, Planes of Fame and Yanks.  Yanks has improved greatly in the past few years and has a great display of 30's and 40's light aircraft in addition to a modern section.

For hobby shops, Tony Naccarato now is holding down the fort at Smith Brothers Hobby in Reseda.  There is also Covina Hobbies in West Covina on Citrus, about a mile north of the 10 freeway. Finally, Pegasus Hobbies in, either Clearmont or Monclair (they are next to each other, and I can't remember which one it is)

Flying sites are Whittier Narrows (most active on Friday, these days) and the Sepulveda Basin.  Whittier is at the intersection of the 60 freeway and Rosemead Blvd. in El Monte. The Park is in four sections. The flying site is in the Southwest corner of the Northwest section. It is visible on Google Maps.  The Sepulveda site is between Burbank Blvd. and Victory Blvd. west of Woodley. There are both RC and CL sites at both places.  In addition, on Sundays, people fly lightweight FF gliders and rubber power at the Balboa lake site known as the "Grassy Knoll" (actually, just north of the lake itself).

If you want to see some slope soaring, Point Fermin is spectacular and very popular.  It is in San Pedro at the intersection of Gaffey St. and Paseo Del Mar.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Just expanding on Larry's comments...Yanks museum does have some light aircraft such as the Beech D17S Staggerwing that was the U.S. embassy airplane in England during WWII but their focus is on warbirds from the 30s & 40s.  They also have some jet fighters from the Korean war era up through the F-14, F-15, & F-16.  Outside they have larger airplanes including a Lockheed C-121 (L-1049).  Interestingly they have two F-104 Starfighters.

Pegasus Hobbies is on Moreno Street in Montclair.  Central Avenue offramp from the 10 freeway, north one block to Moreno, turn right & it's on the right.
