Trivia Question
« on: September 12, 2024, 12:31:08 PM »
This photo was taken at the Western Kentucky/Southern
Illinois Champs at Paducah Ky in 2007. The gentleman in the photo all have something in common as related to flying control line. Anyone care to take a SWAG? ( Scientific, Wild Ass Guess)

I know Allen and Jim played musical instruments. Not sure about the others. 🤓

Don’t think they taught school. I know Jim tried to teach me how to put on a good finish but I always got a -C minus for getting heavy with the paint.

I would think everyone has flown a RM, but not sure that Walt did.

I do not recognize the man on the far left, in the blue shirt and blue pants, next to Mr. Brickhaus.   So, my guess as to commonality is that each man designed a CL plane and had an article about it published in one of the magazines.

My other guess is that at one time, each man won a contest, such as Old Time or Classic, at maybe VSC.

Well, I think I know all those guys. The man on the left in blue is Walt Brownell. He was also a second place finisher in "B" Team Race at the Plymouth Internats. We found his trophy in his basement, and I verified it by the results published in Air Trails magazine in the 1953 Annual, I think it was. Walt was from Alabama originally but went to college, worked lived, retired and eventually passed away here in the St. Louis area.
Next is my twin brother Alan "Darrel" Brickhaus, ( an inside joke between he and me!) and I knew he won all sorts of stuff, but was originally from Southern Missouri, so that takes being from Alabama out of the mix. Charlie Reeves I think was always from the Paducah, KY area, won lots of stuff in several disciplines from free flight to scale to stunt and carrier. Charlie introduced the world to the MO-1 design for carrier I believe?? Jim Lynch was well known by the stunt community and a friend to us all and also won a bunch of stuff.
Next is one that no body got, and that is John Simpson, who designed the Cavalier I first met John in the early 1990s when I went to a contest in Southern, Indiana and he was there spectating. I was flying my new at that time Shark 45, and since that was from his era when he designed his Cavalier, he fell in love with it and I think that is what got him back into building and flying models. I believe he knew and was good friends with Lew McFarland, who designed the Shark .45. John was from Alabama also so that was 2 out of the six!!
And lastly is Kenny Stevens, who was also a long time friend of Lew McFarland's and grew up going to Lew's hobby shop and going to contests with him. Kenny was from the Lexington, KY , same as Lew McFarland, and of course Kenny has won all sorts of stuff and been a member of the FAI stunt team.  John Sunderland isn't in this picture.
So that's two from Alabama, three from Kentucky, one from Missouri that transplanted to Illinois/Paducah and also played trombone, I don't think John Simpson played any instruments, don't know about Kenny, Jim and Charlie, and i didn't see any instruments in Walts house either.
So it must be because they all won something significant!! Or that they all knew ME!!
  Type at you later,
    Dan McEntee

PS; Do I get any points for know that John Simpson isn't John Sunderland??

The second photo shows the answers. They all won a title at the NATS.
I know John Simpson and did not pickup on the error.  I saw John at KOI last year.
