Title: Triple Tree Was Triple Amazing
Post by: Vincent Judd on May 19, 2019, 03:13:06 PM
One of my very favorite model airplane experiences ever.  Sensory overload, from the minute we pulled through the tree lined entrance until the moment we closed the door on our motor home and hit the road to return home.

Stunt camp was a blast.  Thanks to everyone who helped to set it up and support it, especially Mark Weiss.  Derek Barry was coaching me and gave me some tips on improving my patterns.  David Fitzgerald was also helping all of the trainees and had some suggestions for me.  David even took the time to find a discarded soda can that I cut up and used for a trim tab. On my second camp flight Wednesday, my outboard wing gear decided to collapse.  I was ready to pack it in, but Derek took one look at it and decided we could repair it.  He spent the next hour and half digging into my wing and repairing both landing gear blocks.  A huge thanks to Derek, can't say enough.  I would have never been able to fly in the profile contest the next day without all his hard work.  Randy Smith was also very helpful.

I participated in the profile contest on Thursday and had a great time.  Messed up my 2nd flight, but still enjoyed it very much.  Thanks to all the organizers, and a special thanks to everyone who sat out there, constantly moving due to the shifting winds, and judged us.

Mark Weiss, what a guy.  Thank you, I'm sure you put in a ton of work to get this deal organized and it couldn't have been better.  What an awesome flying site.  Like flying on the 18th green at Pebble.  I've never flown on grass like that, ever.  Got my first 40 point takeoff, it was that smooth.  Thanks Mark.

Those of you who are die hard CL stunt flyers and refuse to accept any other form of modeling, can stop reading here.

The rest of Joe Nall, from a RC standpoint was just incredible.  The flight lines were packed every day, you just pulled your plane in line and waited your turn.  Jets, WWI biplanes, pattern ships, warbirds, scale DC-3's, all flew together.  There was a noontime demo every day.  What a sight.  I've never seen so many jets in one place at one time.   Each one more beautiful than the next.  Most everyone was pretty well behaved, but I did see a couple of knuckleheads.  Some planes were lost in the trees, some crashed, some collisions, but considering how many flights went up every day, the carnage was minimal.  I flew my electric 3D plane down in the designated area and had a blast.  I also tore up the lake with my RC racing boat one afternoon, trying to avoid the lines of the guys fishing on the bank.  The float planes shared the lake with boaters and those planes were out of this world, so beautiful and majestic taking off from the lake.

If you were to ask me my favorite 2019 Joe Nall memory, it had to be the night we went down to the crazy 3D area and watched a bunch of guys put these 105" 3D planes through some amazing flights in total darkness.  OK, in complete fairness, they had lights on the planes.  Two brilliantly bright lights on top and bottom of each wingtip.  Same on the stab.  Lit up the entire sky.  Watching these guys come down the runway at high speed, rolling the plane as fast as possible, as close to touching the runway as possible, is something that you just have to witness for yourself.  The airplane with the lights was just a blur.  One guy got so low rolling down the runway that he actually knocked the lights off of one wingtip, but kept right on flying.  Now, I fly 3D and I can tell you my entire vocabulary during one of these demonstrations consisted of mainly....."holy crap, how did he do that"?  If you're there next year, just go over to the 3D flight line area and watch, I think you'll be amazed at the talent that these guys have with these big planes.  You'd have to be pretty hardcore not to enjoy that show.

That's it.  Thanks again Mark Weiss, you did a great job.  Triple Tree 3 thumbs up.  Hope to fly with you again next year.  My advice to anyone planning on attending would be to plan to stay on the property.  There's so much to see and do, if you have to leave to go back to a motel every evening, you miss a lot of it.

You're very welcome. I'm glad that you were able to compete Friday.
