Tried something new today
« on: September 20, 2013, 08:03:04 PM »
I have been flying my Magicians on McCoy 40 Red Heads for the last 15 years, and decided to try something different. So I have a Super Tigre 46 that I made a .250 venture with a through the venture Tigre spray bar and needle. I started out flying it on my usual 58' .015 eye to eye lines with an 11-6 APC cut to 10-1/2". The Tigre is about an ounce heavier than the McCoy, so I was just a little nose heavy, but otherwise it was pretty good.

After the first two flights to see how it was going to work I went to 61' .018 lines to slow it down some. What a powerhouse. It does the whole pattern on 4 ounces of fuel and in a four stroke except for a two stroke beep at the top of manuevers once in a while. Of course, dragging around a plane with less than 500 square inches that weighs less than 40 ounces is extremely easy for the engine and it is just loafing along. It also ran steady for the whole flight on uniflow without changing lap time at all that I could tell through the whole tank. I was running Sig 5% nitro 25% all castor fuel and stock compression. This is the first time I have run a Super Tigre 46 and I am impressed. I think a 1/2 ounce or so in the tail and I will be back in the game.

Sounds good Jim.  I loved the .46.  I used them box stock except did away with the sprinkler and put the spray bar at 1/2" off the mounts right through the center.  Actually Cochran stuck with the sprinkler and really hard to tell any difference. I thought the golden prop for the Tigre was the Rev Up 11 1/2 x 6.   I know you'll like its power and consistency.  After I couldn't get parts for them any more I went through quite a few other engines trying to find an equal replacement.  Can't say I ever did until I got to pipes.  I have found the .51 (which seem now impossible to get) to be quite like the old .46.  They have a little more power but don't like bigger props.  Have fun.

Very consistant running Dave. With the small venture the needle is very easy to set and is pretty broad. Andrew Hathaway was flying with me and I had him tell me where to set the needle as he has run them before. The old McCoy Red Heads have done well also and I now have two to run in my other Magician. One of them is getting a little tired after 15 years of running so the Tigre is a welcome change. Just need a little trimming and try some different props and I think it is going to be fun. The Tigre sure has a cool growl and really runs much like the McCoy's.

Jim I know somebody who I'm sure still has a stash of parts for it (and a few good engines). I'll needle Jimmy P. to turn loose.  Maybe we can keep em running awhile.  It's rings and bearings for these.  Nitro eats the brass bearing races in Tigers.  Talk soon.

I have 1 .46 "bones" engine I intend to recondition, I wasn't flying stunt in the ST's heyday, only heard of their prowess.

Hi Randy,

If you can, get an ABC set up from Brian G.  This does away, totally, with any ring problems!  He has a thread going on SSW.
