Title: Travels with Elwyn
Post by: De Hill on June 07, 2014, 06:22:11 AM: Elwyn and I are in Dayton , Ohio getting ready to go to the Air Force museum. We drove up from Tulsa yesterday. Yes, the vacuum cleaner museum is still open in Rolla, Mo.

The trip was uneventful except for traffic jams just before and right after Indianapolis.

We got to the air force museum about 8:30 am. As we went down the entrance road, we saw an F-104 Starfighter mounted on a pylon at an upwards 45 degree angle with a live red tailed hawk sitting on the tip of the pitot tube. We looked at a few of the airplane exhibits at the outdoor air park, and then headed inside to start our tour of the museum. There were about 40 people already in line. The museum has free entry, but we had to walk through a metal detector to get in.

We went through the (in order) World War 2 gallery, the Early years gallery, Cold war gallery, the Southeast asia war gallery, the Korean war gallery, the Cold war gallery, and the Missile and space gallery.

3. The next picture is for Marvin Denny. He worked on B-36's while he was in the USAF.

4.Next picture is a Curtiss AT-9 twin engine trainer. We had two of them at Spartan School of Aeronautics that we used for line maintenance training. Spartan gave them to the museum in the late 1970's' and one was restored; it's the only complete AT-9 in the world.

5.The last picture is of a WW2 Schwitzer training glider, was restored by Spartan students in the late 1970's. The wings were all wood, and the students signed their names on each piece of woodwork on the glider. I signed off the major repair on it.

The Restoration tour is only on Fridays.
Upon exiting the museum, turn right, go through the overpass, hang another right and take the first gate on right to the Wright Brother's Museum. Before entering the Museum, walk across the parking lot to view the field the Wright Brothers flew from and the actual AFB.

The Cold War hanger is my favorite. The prettiest color scheme I've seen on their F-84, the F86D spy plane, the B36, the B58 that looks like a sci-fi movie prop. When you stand on the balcony and look over the B47, B38, B58, the U2, and the SR71, you are pretty proud of the USA.

Maybe Dan will have his GHQ running!

I can't count the number of times I have been there. Allways outstanding and to much to really cover in a day. Thanks for the pics.

Post by: De Hill on June 08, 2014, 05:06:12 PM: Yesterday, Elwyn and I spent 6 hours walking around the Air Force museum. We were sore, worn out, and and suffering sensory overload. We woke up this morning with sore legs.

We left Dayton at 7:15 am, and arrived at Waynesville, Pa. at 12:15. We saw 16 roadkilled deer this year. Our motel room was clean, and they checked us in right away. After unloading all our baggage, we drove to Carmichaels, and Brodak Field.

We saw Tom Martin, Bob Reeves Collen and Joe Gilbert, Sparky, Jerry and Merry Phelps, Mark Weiss, (one of the CD's) Bob Brookins, Lew Woolard, Ginger and Larry Scarinzi, John and Buzz Brodak, and a bunch of other guys whose names I don't remember. I'll have my clipboard out at the field tomorrow, and write some of their names down. My memory isn't like it was a few years ago.

Joe Gilbert was flying his profile T-6 Texan, and the outboard wing fell off in flight. The airplane has at least a thousand flights on it. I don't know if Joe will fix it or not.

We went and ate supper at the Brodak café with Ginger and Larry Scarinzi. It's always a lot of fun being with them.

That would kill alot of the structural integrity of the balsa.

Post by: De Hill on June 08, 2014, 07:45:27 PM: John Brodak showed me the new ARF Ringmaster prototype. He said that two minor errors have been corrected. The Ringmaster has an adjustable leadout guide and a weight box.

The new covering is superior to the old film coverings on the other ARFS. It is applied with more overlapping of the covering so that it will stay on a lot better.

The airplane will sell for about $100.00.

If it's any consolation, I can e-mail you the PDF file to get prints for building a replacement. I guess the old bird could only stand so many of those high G square corners. I am guessing about 35 per flight times 1000. Amazing it lasted that long.

Post by: De Hill on June 09, 2014, 06:08:40 PM: I saw John Miller today, working on his American Eagle which is painted up like a Scarinzi Blue Angel. It was good to see and talk to him. I saw Lew Woolard, Doug Benedetti, Pete Hermans and Sleepy Dawson. Bob Krug was present, selling powermaster fuel. Also visited with Shirley and Jack Sheeks. They were selling off a bunch of modeling stuff for the widow of a departed modeler.

Elwyn's and my shelter is next to the one belonging to Bob Reeves and Tom Martin. Tom has two tables full of engines to sell at very cheap prices. Larry Scarinzi was heard to say that they were really cheap! Watching Tom and Larry negotiate on engine prices is really entertaining.

At three pm, Elwyn, Tom and I had a Main Coon cat viewing in John and Buzz's house. The two cats are brothers and are named Ben and Jerry. Ben's official color is Brown and High White Jerry's official color is Orange and High White. These are huge cats!

Bob Zambelli was displaying three engines that he restored belonging to John Brodak. They were a two cylinder Richter drone engine, A four cylinder McCollough Drone engine, and a four cylinder 54 horsepower Franklin. These engines were painted and detailed very well.

I saw Joe Gilbert's T-6 fly, and Joe said that it should be ok for profile stunt tomorrow.

The first day of the Brodak Fly-In is tomorrow. The events held will be:
Profile Stunt : 4 classes

Sportsman Foxberg Racing

Carrier Tuesday and Wednesday- .15 carrier-Profile carrier-Sportsman carrier- Carrier 1&2 combined.

Title: Tuesday, June 10, first day of the contest

I didn't feel like running around the field writing a whole bunch of stuff today, so I spent a lot of time helping Tom Martin sell engines. Tom is a fellow Gluedobber, and has designated me to help sell of his modeling stuff if and when he passes away. He and I repriced his engines.
We are selling engines cheap. If you are going to be out at Brodak's field tomorrow, come and look at Tom's engines. They are cheap. Even Larry Scarinzi said so!

We talked to Dan Banjock about how he built his twin cylinder Fox .70. The way he built the crankshaft and the backplate for the front Fox .35 was slick, and should last for a long time. Dan Banjock has fun. He showed us his old Cox TD-1 .0 49 arf. He built it out of parts, and it took him years to find them . Some of the parts he had to make himself.

Roy Decamera showed up! I hadn't seen him for 5 years.

Elwyn and I went over to the Navy carrier circle. While we were there a young fawn wandered across the circle. It was neat to see and Elwyn got a picture of it. Bob Reeves got his carrier birds working, but we didn't know how he came out.

Later, Larry Scarinzi called John Miske, and Jack Sheeks and I got to talk to him.

As the day was ending, we saw Lew Woolard flying his Smoothy. Big Art Adamissin was standing by the circle watching Lew and Grinning!

Elwyn and I left then and went to Hartley's restaurant to eat Larry and Ginger Scarinzi were there. We joined them and were entertained by Larry and the waitress.

We went back to the motel and called it a day.

I walked through the Beginner /Intermediate pits and looked at the different aircraft and saw the following:

Title: Day Two
Post by: De Hill on June 11, 2014, 04:46:17 PM: Elwyn and I got to Beodak's aroung 7 am, and found that the shelter being used by Bob Reeves and Tom Martin
resembled a spider that had been stepped on. It had rained heavily during the night; water was trapped on the fabric and crushed the shelter. Bob towed it off to a disposable area on the southeast side of the field. They moved everything (tables and engines)over to the shelter that Elwyn I were using, and everything was good.

I interviewed Canadian Len Bourel and asked him why Canadians wear rubber welly boots at Brodak's. He said it was to keep their feet dry. I had thought it might be a fashion statement or something.

Perky's were flying today. The Perky was designed by Matt Kania (of Ringmaster fame) back in the 1940's. It was designed to be powered by an Ohlsson and Rice .23. The guys here are using Rossi and Nelson .15's! They are loud and the Peky's run about 100 mph.

I am having computer problems so I will post this now.

Elwyn and I handed out a couple of awards that we made up.

The George Aldrich Award was given to David Felinczak for his splendid orange Gieske Nobler with Polish Air Foce markings.

The Allen Brickhaus Award was given to Tom Morris. He always gives more than he gets. A wonderful man.

Looks to be electric, and this rings a bell of someone mentioning this model on here some where along the line. The model in Blue Angles colors is John Miller's All American Eagle classic model. Elwyn is just AWESOME with that camera!

Elwyn and I awarded John Wright the Mirror Meet Award for his Box Car Chief. The Mirror Meet Award is a pith helmet painted white with the Mirror Meet logo on the front of the helmet.

I watched basic flight but forgot to write down names. I'll get it tomorrow.

I spent most of the day watching the flying and hanging out with Tom Martin, Bob Reeves, Larry Scarinzi and Elwyn.

It started raining about 2:45. We took down the shelter before it rained, but left our chairs out. They got wet!
About 4 it was still raining, so Elwyn and I decided to go to Hartley's restaurant to eat. When we got out of Hartley's the rain had stopped.

So, We missed the Brodak Big feed on Friday evening, and we didn't find out if the Junkyard Wars event was held.

The Old Farts and the Chick gave them a run for the money in my opinion. Danny even flew both planes for the closing of the event. I think the contestants and spectators had way too much fun. I know I am still laughing, oohing and aahing as I type this.

I believe that belonged to Dennis Adamisin, but he had to go to a back up ship when somebody purchased the Yak. I think it's the Sterling version with dihedral added and electric powered.

Hate to think how many rolls of film he used up before he got the digital stuff. He is a master at it. I tried with my little camera and never did get all of a plane. Most was just the pilot in the center.

Elwyn and I went up on the hill to watch scale for a while. We saw an Excellent OS .40 fp powered profile scale T-6 Texan fly. We also saw a 1/2a Beech Staggerwing fly.

While the tabulators were finishing up the scores, we saw two navy carrier airplanes flying combat. John Wright and Paul Smith were the pilots. We also saw Dan Banjock fly the Double sized Bislob.

They handed out the awards and We hit the road around 3 pm.

More later; the successful dodging of the dreaded orange cones in Indianapolis!

Hi Dennis
The Yak-9 is, or rather was, mine. It was actually the prototype for the electric conversion kit that I designed for the Brodak Yak-9 kit which is the same as the Sterling except it dispenses with the "log" wing structure. The conversion is actually two stages, first is to move the LG to the wing and build the wing with dihedral. This can be done with the IC powered kit. The second part is to convert the fuselage for electric power.

I airplane flies well. I was going to use it for Profile class. I had a helper who really liked the airplane, one thing led to another and I SOLD it to him, ended up flying the Cosmic Wind instead...

Post by: De Hill on June 19, 2014, 07:32:03 AM: We left Carmichaels around 3 pm on saturday. Seeking to dodge the dreaded orange barrels in Indianapolis, we took the southern route. We took I-70 east till We got to Columbus Ohio. Along I-70, we passed a house that had a lot of welded up metal fighter airplanes that had about 3 or 4 foot wingspans hanging from a tree in the front yard. There were many roadkilled deer on the highways.

We then took hwy 71 south to Cincinnati. The road was congested with traffic. I was in the fast lane and didn't seem to be making much time. The fast lane I was in was not passing the slow lane at any rate of speed. Elwyn said "what is the speed limit?" I said "70." Elwyn then said "how fast are you going?" I looked at the speedo and said "90"! We seemed to be going a lot slower. We got through Cincinnati pretty quick and headed down to Louisville, Kentucky. We went through Louisviile with no problems and headed west on Ohio hwy 64. We finally stopped at Croydon, Ohio at a scenic super 8 motel. We left about 7 am, and got in to Tulsa about 4 pm.

We did dodge the orange barrels!

Post by: john e. holliday on June 19, 2014, 11:48:46 AM: The wife and I left Waynesburg about 0900 their time. Did not take the bypass through Indy as there was very little traffic. In fact I seldom take the by pass in Indy except the northern route to Muncie. Our hold up was a couple of construction areas that cut us down to one lane in one and the other I think was the people gawking at what was going on. Got home about 1215 AM our time. Felt good driving with no rain and I told the wife I would keep driving until I got tired. Pulled on to Merriam Lane a couple of miles from the house and it hit me. Didn't even take time to unload the car and would have straight to bed if not for the dogs. Never seen them so excited. Anyway I hope every body made it home safe and sound. But, 854 miles is not the record for me thought with out stopping to take a nap.
