Traveling field box-on the cheap!
« on: July 20, 2010, 09:06:30 PM »
Here are some pics of my "Pack along in the luggage" Field / Pit Kit.  The box is 6" X 9" X 4" deep. Smaller box was just a lucky find that fit.

A handle, several sets of lines, fuel syringe, glow driver, and a Leatherman multi-tool (both in belt holsters)  are all right there when you open the box. There is also a retractable razor knife, some ca, and a small tin of hardware/ glow plugs.

Smaller box under handle / syringe holds wrenches, multi bit screwdriver set, a torque screwdriver and bits for engine assembly and checking fasteners for security. A few misc tools, spare needle valve assy, alcohol wipes for cleaning lines, Ni-starter charger, etc fill the rest of it.

Takes up less room than a pair of jeans in a suitcase, weighs less than 5 lbs, and except for the Torque screw driver kit everything in it could be replaced for about $100.  If you have nicer equipment, and don't want to chance losing it in your luggage - you could ship it ahead, nothing in there is prohibited or Haz-mat to cause shipping issues.

Why would you carry empty line reels?

Good eye Garf!  I am going to make a couple more sets, I have 4 planes stashed around the places I go to work. So a deicated set for each one, and all the same size reel so they fit nice.

Scott - you know I wish I had a Rebel, with the current plan i'll be in N.M. a lot so I think I'll start building it here in the hotel. Oh yeah - don't forget to have Richard bring the Sunshine Special to the pick-nic. Get sombody to put it up for a flight or 2.   Make sure it gets a good low Oh Sh*t inverted pass / pull-out so you can all pretend I'm there.

Bill,
Where in New Mexico? If Albuquerque, we have a flying field and Jim Snelson's Control Line Central. I can also lend you a building board and any tool in my shop/garage. One word of caution, any thing you build has to be light, lots of wing area, and have an a-- kicker of an engine. Our field is asphalt at 5400 feet and the temp is in the 90 - 100 range this time of year. Even the birds sit around and say da-n its hot.
