Well, we all about fell over when the Shultzinator showed up at the Narrows today with airplane, more or less ready to fly. First flight he had a problem with the muffler. it came apart and the part of it went into the prop. Prop and needle valve broke and Steve Helmick (sorry Steve) threw a rag into it to kill the engine. Seemed no harm, no foul. So, cleaned up and tried again. It was a little lean, but not bad (couldn't really adjust the needle now). Donnie gave it a try. That last outside loop was just a little low. Result was a broken stab and rudder, a bit of pavement rash and the desperate need for a new canopy. Sorry about that, Don. Certainly repairable. it only took us about a year to get Don out there. Hopefully, he'll fix it up and come out to play again. And let me tell you, guys; Don can still twist a handle.

Actually, it was me that threw the rag into the stubby prop...2nd try...sorry, Schultzie, I'm rusty. Haven't had to do that in about 3 decades, and I wasn't any good at it then. Don says the Chimpunk will be back with a new and much different cowl and canopy, with V-tail and sub-fin. It should look pretty cool! It will have a Randy Aero Tube Muffler and NV assy., and I'm pushin' for a trike gear. New lines and handle, too. Sort of a rebirth. I think that ST .46 will need a freshening up after the the shaft-run. Stunt engines don't like that nonsense.

Folks that say....you never FORGET how to ride a tricycle..or how fly a CLPA stunt pattern are full of S**T or at the very least...very sadly mistaken.

Speaking of YESTERDAYS MISTAKES....WOW! I RAN THE WHOLE NINE YARDS OF MISTAKES.

My makeshift fuel bulb leaked...(THANKS TO PETE FERGESON he had a spare syringe which he GAVE TO ME! WOW!!! That helped a bunch.
Next mistake
was quickly insert an untested sound plug into the front end of my beautiful flow through muffler that served me sooo well........ almost 3O some years ago.

After about 3 minutes of inflight time...that heavy weight, power robbing muffler plug insert popped off and blew foward into the prop, which resulted into a screaming shaft engine run..thus adding about 30 years of wear and tear...INSTANTLY to my beautiful Bob Wilder "tweaked" custom ST46.

(Hummm? Its hard to believe that this model lasted over 33 years and a life filled with sooo many patterns...MOSTLY WITHOUT DAMAGE...UNTIL YESTERDAY!!

If that wasn't enough...I decided to fly some pattern test flying with an OLD MODIFIED HOT ROCK HANDLE...that was out of adjustment. The result naturally made all my insides and corners turn faster and tighter than my outsides.
Instead of flying safely and conservative...KNOWING that the outsides NEED MORE HANDLE INPUT......I EXPERIENCED AN UNFORGIVING LAME BRAIN FARTOLDDO during the outside faze of the second horizonal 8....WHICH ENDED THE LIFE OF THIS TRUSTY OLD EZZZZ FLYING AND USUALLY FRIENDLY AND FORGIVING 34 YEAR OLD CHIPMUNK.....as it IMPACTED the tarmac in almost a FLAT INVERTED 3 FOOT UNDER THE DECK PULL OUT...IN A SHOWER OF PROP-CANOPY-RUDDER AND FLYING STAB AND ELEVATORS, that look more like AN AFTERMAT of a pillow fight from the pits of HELL!

Actually, it seemed that my flying buds were more concerned that I was...and I appreciate all their help and support...helping me clean up my TARMAC GARAGE SALE!
A HUGE VOTE OF THANKS to MIKE-PETE-N-REPETE..FOR THE FREEBEE'S...a borrowed handle run away strap, hotter plug and that great fuel syringe.
Also a huge thanks to Steve and Randy for Pit crew assistance and jump starting my flight to HELL IN A HANDBASKET!

I don't like shaft runs either and welcome to the wonderful world of stunt again. At our age it is sorta a pain to have all this stuff happen on the first day but it will get better. It seems when we get older some of our good sence seems to take a holiday. Go a little slower like Steve and thing will get better. Just get out there and do it. Welcome to the old folks world. Later that day...after the competition...BEING THE THRILL SEEKIN AIR JUNKIE in those days...I put a quick impromt' CHIPMUNK TEAM FLYING DEMO together with all three flyers.

Ben Madsen and I in the past used to fly our Shark 45's and Noblers (or Sting Rays) through a LEAD AND FOLLOW TEAM THANG' which was always a fun and rather EZ thing to do.

We would simply set our engines to run at about the same rpm. I flew with about 4 feet of longer lines that Ben. Naturally, my model with the longer line set would have to run a slightly faster enigine setting..... plus this seem to help the following stunt model flight to be less effected by ever present turbulance from the lead model. However!!!
HOWEVER...
When you ADD THE 3RD MODEL...this starts to make things interesting...UHHH? more risky and exciting.
(ESPECIALLY WITHOUT PREVIOUS PRACTICE SESSIONS.)

Gary's son's model was faster than the rest of us (at first)...which made it interesting. Plus YOUNG KIDS have exceptional reflexes, about half way through the flight....suddenly Gary's model started speeding up...and unfortunately, my Chipmunk with the muffler pressure stayed about the same rpm. The 3rd flyer's Chimpmunk ran out of fuel...and thankfully had to drop out.
What started out as a pretty good LEAD AND FOLLOW Team demo, after a few minutes became more like a RAT RACE OR COMBAT EVENT.
Thankfully all three of our Chippy's survived that ordeal.
Hummm?
When I think back of all the weird stuff that I would try with that Chipmunk...which included attaching a LONG RAINBOW...Thin very thin gauge and light weight 40 foot streamer. First attaching it to the tail wheel stoogie hook...then later wing tip streamers. (I gave up that after the inside streamer got tangled in both the leadouts and so how ended up winding itself around the prop and spinner...which shut that OS 40 down instantly. Thank THE WIND GODS OF STUNT let me land this model on its wheels....INSTEAD OF THAT INVERTED BELOW GROUND LEVEL LANDING LIKE YESTERDAY.

When and IF I live long enought to put this old HUMPITY-DUMB-IT-TEEE CHIPEEE BACK TOGETHER AGAIN...
ANY ONE BRAVE (or dumbolddo enough) to REVIVE A MULTI MODEL STUNT DEMO TEAM FLYING PERFORMANCE?

HEY, WITH THE NEW ELECTRICS..WE COULD EVEN ADD MUSIC AND FLY A BALLET ROUTINE?
(Naturally....the Team members might be asked to wearing matching costumes...

Thats a pretty big vent hole in the canopy there my Man. I always liked those tinted canopy,s bet they do get a little brittle after mamannyyyyyy years. I think just polishing it is out of the question. Lesson no. 1 to retread. dont do stuff if thing ain't right. I dont see any tears but I bet it will be a long time before this happens again. I hane been known to do a few things like this from time to time. I have a few airpl;anes at home thad have shorter fins because of my skilful flyin...Or lack of... The trouble with retreads is we think we can jump start the old brain. In my case that is not a good thing. Get the epoxy out and put er back togather so you can have more fun. Oh and watch out for Steve throwing things at your plane. He's not very accurate an he probably has sore arm fom all this.

WING OVERS DOWN WIND??? WHAT WIND?

That always poses a problem...especially the WIND (what wind?) that morning was virtually DEAD CALM...and changed constantly from one direction or another.

BUTT HIND SIGHT and BOTTOM LINE:
I should have made adjustments to that flying handle BEFORE THAT LAST 2ND ATTEMPT....especially after that first flight attempt feeaaasssco' scene after my muffler cap popped foward and destroyed my needle valve extention and my beloved one of a kind 11-5 EW prop resulting in that horrific

ENGINE DAMAGING SHAFT RUN.

Now that I have had time to ponder all this...Humm? Sounds like it just might be past time time to dig out my sport kites again..before I can do further damage?

I was talking to Leo. Twice lately I've seen him start wingovers from the downwind side of the circle and crash. He gets away with that at Delta Park, because what's downwind on the ground is upwind above the trees.

I was thinking about a Brodak P-40 profile ARF. It's Pat Johnston designed and is a pretty good flier, all things considered. Pat has been flying one in profile class with an OS 46LA and it's a very nice plane to fly. I was thinking of something that would get you into the air quickly and give you something to fly while you considered the rebuild on the Chip or, Heaven forefend, you build a new plane.

Oh NO Mr. D..

Over the years of stunt flying and just looking at a whole lot of airplanes there are only three that have served as a constant inspiration. There was Jim Kostecky’s "Formula S" for its artistry and adventure; Windy’s "Red Baron", for its simple elegance and quality of finish and this Chip for its execution of your incredible artistry and craftsmanship. At first look you might think its just another red, white and blue Chipmunk stunt thingy. For me, it is the definitive study of individual artistic talent. In years past I attempted to copy some of its elements but I just couldn't execute well. For those who have seen the Chip up close and personal, especially it its prime you know what I'm talking about. I remember some of your other planes for individual notable details or styling but this is THE AIRPLANE that says, Don Shultz. It is the style, personality and artistry of the person, the man and my friend!!

OK, enough sappy stuff! We're all waiting to see you carve out its "Evolution"? Take your time and surprise us!

It's hard to believe its been almost 34 years...since we've cut holes in the sky together both at the Boeing Aerospace back parking lot...and hangin out at the ol' Carol and Donnies little crib starter house near Federal Way.
Yes...that old Chip really dates things and puts time into perspective...that hummin'beings really have so little time here on earth.
Thanks for always being there for Carol and I during those sometimes mean and lean years. You have soooooooooooooooooooooo many friends here in the NW that really miss your friend ship, humor and zest for life.

Naww they all came apart in OTS or PAMPA stunt competition. It was last years Roundup. The one black and yeller one(with no wings!) was Bill Wilson's that was a elevator horn seperated in flight. Twas straight -in concrete crash! UGLY!

Yours will be a piece of Cake to fix!
