Topeka Classic, Profile and Balloon contest
« on: August 25, 2013, 08:37:56 AM »
Today is this newer fall contest.  It's a bit windy at 8-10 but flyable.  The pilots meeting over I'll try a shot of each plane flying today.  Turnout is down a bit from last year- weather I guess but those here will have a great time.  Here is a shot of Bob Brookins pretty new Oriental/ B40.

Due in part to the wind,  most the flyers are going dual purpose for both stunt events today with their profiles.  Here's a shot of Docs twin Ringmaster hiding under the truck from the breeze.

Thanks for the pics Dave. I was going to make the trip, and pick up a kit from Doc, but got put on call at work for the weekend. Great bunch of people there, and I always have fun. Thought I might redeem myself for draggin the rudder on my Shark last year! I like Jim Kraft's Magician also. Good old fashioned C/L stunt!

Thanks for posting all the pictures Dave. We did have fun even though it was HOT. A fairly small contest but all that were there are a hoot to fly with. Did I mention it was HOT.

The tophy that Dave made has to be seen as it is just beautiful. I know Andrew was extremely happy to win it for the first year. I have been watching Andrew fly for several years and was not surprised at him winning both events today. He has really gotten polished lately, and put in some really nice flights.

Thanks to Jim Lee and Ginger Taylor for judging in the hot sun, and all those who helped. And a big thank you to Dave for the trophy and taking all the pictures.

Doc has to tell us more about his twin Ringmaster. Don't think I have heard of it before. Looks to me like there is a semi-scale Grumman Tigercat hiding in there somewhere!

Yes it was great seeing Andrew accept the traveling trophy that was just started.  Maybe he can post a picture of him with it.  I can remember him as the little snot nosed kid from way back.   He has improved quite a bit in his flying.   His Dad is quite a gentleman also and I am glad I know them both.

By the way the Ringmaster Twin is a Pat King design.   If you are a member of the "Brotherhood of the Ring" forum you can see someof his designs over their.   This is a laser cut kit from him with full size plans.   Calls for .15's, but at 50+ inch wingspan and being a cheap skate I went with LA .25's.   It will not or is not over powered with a stunt setting.   It does turn quick if you hit the handle.   Took me several laps to get over the first flight jitters.  Can't believe that I got  them after all these years.

Also the temp gauge the Ford company puts in the Explorer showed 94F degrees when I left the field.   Glad I have the old time air conditioning,  roll down the windows and drive fast.

The long range forecast looked really nice, low 80's with under 10mph winds.  As the day got closer the forecast high crept up to mid 90s and that 10mph wind prediction went up to around 15mph.  As it worked out, it didn't break 90* until after most of the flying was finished, and the wind wasn't terrible, so it almost was as nice as the forecast.  Thanks to the Topclass people that made the contest happen.  Especially the judges that spent the day in the heat running back and forth as the gusts changed directions.  It's always a fun contest to attend, and you couldn't ask for better people to spend the day with.

A week ago neither of my planes were working right due to engine issues.  The 35S ABC in the Nobler randomly would go rich and sometimes quit, and the 32F in the Primary Force hadn't been properly tuned.  Several days this week we got up early to get flights in before it got too hot or windy.  After changing a plug, cleaning a fuel filter, adjusting pipe length, and trimming/balancing a propeller, I was pretty sure they'd get through the pattern.  I have to thank my dad for putting up with me, getting up early and forever holding my planes in the heat, wind, and mosquitoes.  And also thanks to Jim Kraft for having a constant positive attitude, and giving encouragement.

The VERY NICE trophy made it back to Salina and is safely displayed on the mantel.  :)

Some more pics...  Some dupes, some not, oh well.
