Topclassical Contest Sunday, May 26
« on: May 26, 2013, 07:49:19 PM »
Elwyn and I arrived at the Topclass flying field (located in Family Park, 21st and Urish) around 9 am. We saw Darwin Ullendahl practice flying with a SIG Magnum. Jim Lee was there doing last minute preparations. Pete Lee was there with his 1966 chevelle two door 300 Deluxe sedan. It had 230 (six cylinder) badging on the front fenders, And a hotted up 400 cu. in. engine with a four speed tranny. It is a consumate sleeper with the painted steel rims and the dog dish hubcaps.

I talked to Jerry Higgins, a Colorado stunt flier and friend of the late Rusty Brown and his west highland terrier Sugar Babe.
We talked about Rusty for a while, and Jerry mentioned that The Denver and surrounding area fliers had started a new stunt club called the Colorado Controline Aerobatics club. One of their flying sites will be at the Arvada Association Modelers club.

It was then 9:30 am. and the CD, Jim Lee called a fliers meeting. The wind was starting to build and everyone got ready to fly. I counted 28 cars in the parking lot.

The Tabulators were Tiffany Lee, and Erika Hrenchir.
The scoresheet runners were Jackson Lee, and Dylan Prier.
The Old Time Stunt and Basic Flight Judges: Pete Lee, and Dale Hrenchir.
The Advanced/ Expert judges were Ginger Taylor and Jim Lee.

The winds increased as the day went on. The wind occasionally had some nasty swirls in it. By 11:30 am, flying was over.

The Topeka c/l association held a merchandise raffle on saturday and sunday. The tickets were sold by a lady and a young man whose names I did not write down. As soon as I get them, I'll post them here.

They did important work.

The ladies name was Maggie Bacon. I didn't get the young man's name.

Many times the raffle makes the difference between making a little or losing money at a contest.

Elwyn and I left the contest at 12:30 and headed back to Tulsa. On the way we passed through the town of Buffalo, Kansas. From the highway we could see the town cemetary. They had cleaned the graves, placed flowers on them, and had
about 50 american flags on poles placed all over the cemetary grounds. It was an inspiring view.

We got home about 4:30 pm.

Looking back to this weekend; Jim Lee and company put on a well run contest. I like their new flying field.

PS: No one flew electric airplanes. I guess it's not taking over as quickly as the adherents say it will.

Hey! Add Linda Bob's and Ol' Dad's thanks to the Top Class Club, they put on a great contest! It's a wonder that there could even be a Topeka contest. When the club was having their annual contest three or four years ago, they were surprised to find a drilling rig taking core samples in their flying field....never a good sign. Their Control Line flying field at Gage Park (used steadily since its dedication in 1948 to the Veterans of WWII who made the ultimate sacrifice) was being taken over by a "Children's Discovery Center."  Brenda Schuette (you may recall her name as the Contest Coordinator for the Nats ever since Bev Wisnewski passed away) and her hubby, Melvin, (MBS Model Supplies) fought the good fight to save Gage, but ultimately they lost the battle, but did manage a new flying sight on Urish and 21st Street which the Club has nurtured into a first class facility. As De Hill has mentioned, the Schuette clan supplied the feast at Snyder's Cabin enjoyed by all. Duane Robinson smoked pork and turkey into the late hours for the BBQ, the Top Class members of all ages  laid out the victuals and cleaned up afterwards.  Contestants were treated as guests....Top Class Guests, and we liked it!

Although windy on Saturday, the 20 gusting to 30mph didn't quite happen, and the Racing went well, all smooth flying, no mishaps. Jim Lee, CD, kept things organised and running smoothly. There was some outstanding Racing, and the relatively new Super Slow Rat was the most popular event. Times for 100 laps of 5:10, 5:21, 5:28, with three-up flying made for real excitement for pilots, pitcrews and spectators alike.

Pilots for Racing are getting a little difficult to find, as a matter-of-fact, two of them, disguised as white-haired old men, didn't fly Stunt next day, not because they were daunted by the 20-30mph wind (which DID materialize on Sunday), rather, their feet were sore and dirt got in their eyes.  As I type this, my extended left arm is lifting slowly upward, my gaze is fixating on the floor out of the corner of my right eye..... I have it on high authority that if one does this, people will believe anything you say......

dg  :)
Edit: The Top Class Club moved the Memorial Brass Plaque to its new Urish Street location, see the picture below....

Topclassical Contest Awards

The awards were a mix of surplus awards and new ones made by Melvin Schuette. The first place awards were made by Melvin, and were plastic squares that had the Topclass logo inscribed on them. They were coasters and had four round
feet which were stuck to the bottom of them. I may not have this exactly right, but the second place awards were also plastic made by Melvin and were smaller squares. The third place awards were also plastic squares.  the second and third place awards had engraved lettering.

If I got anything wrong, here, hopefully Jim will let me know and I'll fix it.

Thanks, Howard. I'll compile all the Topeka entries on this forum and send them to you. I'll also see if Elwyn will send me the pictures so I can email them to you. (or He can email them to you)

I've flown with the Topeka gang several times and always enjoyed myself. It's odd going that far north from me and seeing the Texas gang, but that's cool too! Wish I could have made it this year. And that plaque from the old site is far beyond cool. What a piece of history!

As an out of town TOPClass member, I too want to thank the club for putting up with this old man.   Can't thank Brenda and Melvin enough for the support they have given me thru the years.   I also want to thank the Old Time Judges for the Spirit of 52 award.   It will be placed with the other special awards in the shop.   Soon as I get to it I will take a pic and post it.   It is special to me.
