Hey! Add Linda Bob's and Ol' Dad's thanks to the Top Class Club, they put on a great contest! It's a wonder that there could even be a Topeka contest. When the club was having their annual contest three or four years ago, they were surprised to find a drilling rig taking core samples in their flying field....never a good sign. Their Control Line flying field at Gage Park (used steadily since its dedication in 1948 to the Veterans of WWII who made the ultimate sacrifice) was being taken over by a "Children's Discovery Center." Brenda Schuette (you may recall her name as the Contest Coordinator for the Nats ever since Bev Wisnewski passed away) and her hubby, Melvin, (MBS Model Supplies) fought the good fight to save Gage, but ultimately they lost the battle, but did manage a new flying sight on Urish and 21st Street which the Club has nurtured into a first class facility. As De Hill has mentioned, the Schuette clan supplied the feast at Snyder's Cabin enjoyed by all. Duane Robinson smoked pork and turkey into the late hours for the BBQ, the Top Class members of all ages laid out the victuals and cleaned up afterwards. Contestants were treated as guests....Top Class Guests, and we liked it!
Although windy on Saturday, the 20 gusting to 30mph didn't quite happen, and the Racing went well, all smooth flying, no mishaps. Jim Lee, CD, kept things organised and running smoothly. There was some outstanding Racing, and the relatively new Super Slow Rat was the most popular event. Times for 100 laps of 5:10, 5:21, 5:28, with three-up flying made for real excitement for pilots, pitcrews and spectators alike.
Pilots for Racing are getting a little difficult to find, as a matter-of-fact, two of them, disguised as white-haired old men, didn't fly Stunt next day, not because they were daunted by the 20-30mph wind (which DID materialize on Sunday), rather, their feet were sore and dirt got in their eyes. As I type this, my extended left arm is lifting slowly upward, my gaze is fixating on the floor out of the corner of my right eye..... I have it on high authority that if one does this, people will believe anything you say......
