Elwyn and I departed Tulsa at 6 am and headed to Topeka, Kansas. We headed north on hwy 169, jogged west on KS 47, and then north on hwy 75 into Topeka. The small towns we passed through had decorated their cemetary's.
Memorial day is still observed in the heartland.
We stopped by the Forbes Field air combat museum, and went through it. They have a very nice selection of aircraft. There were a couple of very rare aircraft there, a North American O-47B observation airplane, and a Douglas F3D Skynight navy fighter. I found out that Forbes Field had been named in 1948 to honor Major Forbes who was killed in the crash of the jet powered version of the Northrop flying wing at Edwards AFB in 1947.
Next we found our motel, checked in, and went to the new Topclass flying field which is located in Family park on the west side of Topeka.

Just a couple of quick edited pics for now. More after dinner

Thanks for pic Elwyn. Really it wasn't that windy to me as I had no trouble holding the stop watch and lap counter.

Elwyn and I got to the new Topeka Controline association (Topclass) field in Family Park about 12 noon. The contest was well under way. I talked to Richard Oliver about Jim Tichy; he said that Jim was a consumate gentlemen. Jim had been the first customer for a ROJETT stunt engine from Richard. I counted 27 cars in the parking lot, and more showed up later. The Topclass club was running a raffle, but I didn't get the ticket seller's names. (I'll do that tommorrow)
Jim and Lova Kraft showed up for a visit. They had to leave later on saturday because they had a grand daughter getting married on sunday. It was good to see them again.

The Great feed in Gage Park at "Snyder's Cabin".
Gage Park is a large park in Topeka where the Topclass club flew from 1948 to 2010. The city took the field away from them, so that they could build a fun center for the children. At least they gave Topclass another flying field at Family Park.
Brenda Schuette's daughters, Angela Robinson and Michelle Parr ramrodded the great Topeka free feed. The meal consisted of a lot more things than I can remember, but it started with barbecue. The side dishes were 3 kinds of baked beans, veggies, potato chips, devilled eggs, and enough desserts to charm a person away from common sense. There was a Lila Lee sighting in Snyder's cabin; it was good to see her again.
Elwyn and I left early to finish our report. I'm done for tonight.
Elwyn is still talking nastily to his computer. It doesn't want to upload pictures.

Great pictures. Elwyn. Thanks.
A bit windy all day, but that didn't hamper the flying. A few wind-moments but all the pilots handled them well. Great racing all day long with some good times turned and good time had by all. If anybody left the feed at the club house, it's their OWN fault! Good food and fellowship.
