Author Topic: Its official ! USA Nats 2014 I'm Coming.... (Read 4355 times)

Well guys,

Its now official, Rhiannon and I are heading over the pond to attend the 2014 US NATS.

We are getting married on April 6th and our Honeymoon is going to be a trip to USA.

Flights and accommodation are booked.

Starting in by flying into San Fransisco ,we will hire a Jeep Grand Cherokee take a Road trip down the coast ,meandering down toward Las Vegas to spend a few days ( 4th July weekend )

Then heading along the famed Route 66.

Toward New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, out toward Indiana for a little stopover to fly in Open - attempt to get into the Top 10, then head out to Dayton - spend a day going through the air base. Out to DC for a few more days, over to NYC for a few nights to fly out of JFK.

39 Days in total.

Not a bad way to spend a Honeymoon.

I'm bringing over 1 Hot Wife and 1 Bad ass plane.

See you there. It will be amazing to introduce her to all my friends in America, hopefully we will be able to stop off along the way and meet up with some during the trip. We cannot wait to attend, have some fun, share good times with everyone, celebrate ~~Winning open~~ our marriage, hopefully have a productive US Nationals campaign, see all the sights your great country has on offer.

This will be my third trip to USA, I've loved it each and every time. See you all in June / July.

We are flying Delta, they co-share with Virgin.

I'd like to fly Qantas but I wouldn't be able to afford to take a drive anywhere !!!!!

There is a lot of history on route 66, but it is fairly primitive. I'm not sure I would want to drive it. But, then again, I'm not on a honeymoon.

Good deal. You'll love the attractions on old Route 66. Just be sure to take photos while "standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona".

Well by default I need to get fly into USA and get to Indiana somehow, and driving was a great choice.

I have no doubt it will be a memorable adventure, what better way to it kick all off with a trip through the heartland.

I guess when your local ,you take things for granted, Its like I have no real interest in seeing Central Australia or Ayes Rock ( Ularu ) but I know many people do. - Hard to fly stunt out there also.. to dusty.

The San Francisco region is a hotbed for stunt and we have probably 20 quite active flyers in the area. As the date of your arrival draws closer you should post your itinerary or plans or something and you will have no shortage of people willing to pick you and new spouse up at the airport, make sure you are pointed in the right direction (Muncie that way, other way is Hawaii), help get you over the colossal jet lag, and what not.

The Itinerary, is pretty set in concrete at this stage. We needed to book the hotels along the way.

The main reason I fly into San Fran ,is I hear there is a very capable guy living in Napa, who has offered to let Rhiannon and I stay with him for a week give the Tiger / PA 75 combination a shake down and do some practice then send us on our way..

I'm not a name dropper...

But thanks to him and his family.

Itinerary is :

24 June Arrive in San Fran USA.
2 - 4th Pismo Beach
4 - 7th Las Vegas
9 - 10th Colorado Springs
11th Kansas
12th Saturday July : Muncie
21st - 22 Dayton
23 - 26th - Washington DC
27 - 30th NYC

That's a very optimistic itenerary my friend...better wear a lead shoe on your right foot and hope you stay out of jail...

Sorry you couldn't make it through Tucson AZ to fly with us for a day or so! We have a great flying area! That would be a long way out of the way for your route though.

Randy - Yeah.. those 2 days are a real Strain on the driving - but I know how far both are

... We needed to push some days forward to allow us more time in other parts.

I really wanted to push to get to Muncie on the Saturday.. If I need to rest so be it.. swings and round abouts.

If we need to just get out Sunday / Monday for the Nats and get a few feeling flights before "official" practice, then I'm prepared for that.

The biggest issue was - TIME, MONEY - and the lack of both. You simply cannot take enough time, or spend enough money to do it justice, somewhere along the line you have to do a 10 + hr stint in the car.. Afterall its a Road trip, not driving ms Daisy.

If you are like me, you will fall in love with the scenery going across Arizona and New Mexico. Usually spend nights in Tucumcari NM going and coming from Tuscon AZ. I don't think route 66 will bring you through Kansas City Missouri/Kansas area. But if you do get on I-70 wave as you go through. If you stay on 66 you will see a lot of Texas and Oklahoma. Don't forget Missouri as once you get to St Louis you will probably take 70 to Indianapolis and then turn north to Muncie. Hope you have your maps all hi-lited. Also have a safe and wonderful trip.

For a young pup like you, that trip will be easy! Besides, you will have a back up driver with you yo help.

Sounds like you will not be on 66 very long if you are going to Colorado Springs. That's quite away from 66!

Great news PJ! I wish Melissa was coming with me this year but she will be at home with the little boy and probably Layla. Layla has been begging me to go but I am not sure if I can keep up with a 6 year old and beat Paul at the same time.

Thanks everyone we all look forward to it.

From the research I've done, Route 66 is very touristy so we only wanted to do a small section of it, and then Create our own Route / Road trip experience.

To be honest one of the reasons we detoured toward Kansas is simply so we can say " Were' not in Kansas anymore... " ( it was on my bucket list.. )

I'm sure we will be excited once Muncie arrives. It will be our holiday destination and a welcomed break to see old friends, and make a few new ones.

Paul, I'm sure I will be tired, but not too tired to beat Derek...

Now why wouldn't the plane come first ? The point of going over is to fly a plane..
Image if she decided to go to Hawaii for a Honeymoon, would I take the plane and try to fly off the sand ?

No.. so that's why the plane come's first.

Someone asked "why would I visit USA ,when a honeymoon destination, like Paris or italy would be better ... (paraphrase )

My answer is simple...

For me none of those places hold any appeal.

I can visit anywhere I want to go, and we chose to fly in a US Nats.

That should indicate how special the event really can be, simply amazing for a true enthusiast.
