Almost......
« on: June 14, 2020, 06:13:29 PM »
On vacation in Seaside Oregon for most of a week.  When we packed up it became apparent that I had room to bring an airplane. Threw in the Ringmaster, some essential stuff, and threw it in the car.

Today is beautiful. 8-10 winds, sunny with a light high overcast. The old high school field is in good shape, can even launch from the track. Got everything out and getting set up and then I saw it. Or, rather, didn’t see it. The line clips that were supposed to be at the leadout end of the lines were not present.  Dug through the things I brought, had everything I needed, with this one exception. Need 4 of them, only had 2.

Oh well, not crushed about it. Would have been fun, but the whole trip has been fun, so I’m not really out anything.
Main reason was our 26th anniversary, so I guess I’ll just go back to focusing on that!

We've all done something like that.

* Loaded up the stuff and the wife and took off on a 1 hour drive to the daughter's, grand daughter, and "him". (Son-in-law  LL~ ) Got to the place we were going to fly, unloaded, started to roll out lines and the daughter asks... "where's the fuel?". DUH!

* Had everything loaded and drove 1 hr 45 min to Tulsa Gluedobbers to spend the day flying with the 'Dobbers. Got my stuff out... reached into the field box to retrieve a roll w/lines and... where's my lines???  Forgotten that I had taken them, and other stuff, out of the field box to clean it good, and apparently forgot to put the lines back in! DUH again!

SO... as you can see, you're not the only moron in C/L flying.  LL~

One guy left his lines and handle on the field after practice at an F2B Team Trials and couldn't fly with borrowed stuff. Another guy got dehydrated and left his model on the flying field. It was never seen again. Neither was me!  LL~ Steve

Yeah, the local General Store probably had some fishing tackle clips that would have worked ok. But Gary probably dodged the bullet on that, because decades from now, he'd still be hearing about it. Come to think of it, he'll still be hearing about this crass bit of bad judgement...  LL~ Trust me on that; I've been hitched for 53 years now...not all fun and games! Every now and again, I hear about something I did or said 40+ years ago. I don't remember what she did last week that I didn't like!   :P   Steve

Not the same situation here obviously, but in a reverse twisted kind of way......  A few years ago had a small linkage retaining clip come off from underneath my Kubota tractor.  The replacement part?  A large size Perfect brand line clip of course!

It's amazing what you can do with fence wire and a pair of pliers!  (It got me home once, when the silencer fell off an old motorcycle I used to have.  Chain-link fencing might just be thin enough to make emergency line connectors, maybe?  You'd only need a couple of inches, so there's a chance that nobody would notice.)

I have two fields I use at Seaside:  The high school and the baseball field near the hospital.   I leave a plane at the beach house and go flying by just bringing my field box with fuel and tools...

If it's windy, I fly the stunt kites on the beach.  If not windy, control-line flying.

Wow....that brings back good memories. Not the lead-out problems, but being in Seaside, Oregon. I was there in November 1989 for the very first World Cup for stunt kites. It was also my very first trip out of South Africa. I designed a stunt kite called the Windstunter and someone put in some good money to produce it. It is a smallish delta kite that has a clear plastic sail with the side view of an airplane on it, and you fly it with a single handle just like a C/L model. I was convinced that it would sell like hotcakes, and I even had an appointment with toy agents in Manhattan when I got over there. I figured that the World Cup would be a good opportunity to promote it, but the day that I arranged for a big demo where I would fly a pattern against some of the big delta stunt kites, the wind stopped dead! Either way, I had a ball and really enjoyed my time there watching the team kites flying to music. I still have a bunch of videotapes of the event.

At that stage, I was not flying C/L, as it was pretty much dead in my country, so I came back with a few big delta kites and started a team with two of my friends. The one youngster Loren Nell, was a teenager back then and during the 90's C/L was revived and he is still flying good stunt today, although he lives in New Zealand now. Some of the USA stunt team members will know Loren. Good times, and like I said, I really enjoyed my 10 days at Seaside Oregon. The people in general were so friendly wherever I went.

Pat, send me a PM and perhaps next time I’m in town we can go flying. I had no idea anyone there flew.

That is great about knowing people in an area you may vacation in or visit.  I know I've been to Dallas/Fort Worth many times but did not have time to get in touch with guys.   Did get to fly with John Bender at the Fort Worth field one year. D>K

Not being able to fly a Ringmaster because of line clips lost no disaster.  In fact, it is a blessing in disguise.
