Wow....that brings back good memories. Not the lead-out problems, but being in Seaside, Oregon. I was there in November 1989 for the very first World Cup for stunt kites. It was also my very first trip out of South Africa. I designed a stunt kite called the Windstunter and someone put in some good money to produce it. It is a smallish delta kite that has a clear plastic sail with the side view of an airplane on it, and you fly it with a single handle just like a C/L model. I was convinced that it would sell like hotcakes, and I even had an appointment with toy agents in Manhattan when I got over there. I figured that the World Cup would be a good opportunity to promote it, but the day that I arranged for a big demo where I would fly a pattern against some of the big delta stunt kites, the wind stopped dead! Either way, I had a ball and really enjoyed my time there watching the team kites flying to music. I still have a bunch of videotapes of the event.
At that stage, I was not flying C/L, as it was pretty much dead in my country, so I came back with a few big delta kites and started a team with two of my friends. The one youngster Loren Nell, was a teenager back then and during the 90's C/L was revived and he is still flying good stunt today, although he lives in New Zealand now. Some of the USA stunt team members will know Loren. Good times, and like I said, I really enjoyed my 10 days at Seaside Oregon. The people in general were so friendly wherever I went.
