Too much of a good thing?
« on: February 27, 2007, 03:35:07 AM »
I nearly added this to the A list topic, it was a natural progression to what was there. However, better start a new one!
Yes this is a great Forum, and I look every day. But how much time does one have for this sort of activity? I look at 3 c/l forums and e-b every day, and what with e-m's, I can easily spend over 2 hours daily on the computer. I really cannot justify more time than this. If another great c/l forum appears I am just going to have to ignore it. Same goes for mags. I now take only one English mag, and SN. I do belong to AMA and took Model Aviation for one year, but it was so thick and heavy with so much admin that I abandoned it, and am about to start Flying Models. This will cater for my all-round interest in modelling. There it has to stop, there ain't enough time available. Any one else have this problem?
Ian Russell.
[I can remember the schedule o.k., the problem is remembering what was the last manoeuvre I just flew!].

Because of the winter months not being able to fly (at least here) This forum was born. It was to give everyone fellowship and advice on building. The look a feel was designed to make you feel at home. I guess I have succeeded! This is good. The information you get here you will not find anywhere else. Any print type does not talk back, but here you have an interactive means to the end result. When you read an article in a magazine and you have a question what do you do? You will have to wait until an article comes out that answers your question. Here you just ask and within minutes you have an answer.

I watch these answers closely, I do not answer all questions as there is always more than one way to skin a cat. The moderators answer the questions.

I only look at four control line forums... and I read whatever I can get my hands on...  and search for hours on eBay.... but then again I'm having a break from employment at the moment so I do have pleanty of time on my hands.  Lately, I've been madly building and flying when I can, and then when I want a break I come inside make a cuppa and sit down at the PC for a while.

This forum is a great idea though, Robert is right, while I'm building or flying, something crops up that I need an answer to, and instead of getting on the phone and wasting time ringing around, I just post a message here and within minutes there is an answer. Like my Fox 35 NVA question today. It's good for me because I live remotely now to everyone else here and its great to be able to tap the knowledge of so many knowledgable people so easily.

I look at two C/L forums on a regular basis.  I have two other "Hobby Sites" I watch, also. (I am a Moderator on ones of those, also)

I very seldom cut off my computer, and I stay logged in here at night and while I am at work.  I finally found a way to log in here at work! **)

But my home computer being on almost 24/7/365 shows a LOT of looged in time for me, when I actually ain't here! **)

There used to be a time that I could play golf, play Baseball, Build and fly freeflight and controline, Play pool with a friend of mine and go fishing in the rockies. I worked between 45 and 55 hrs. a week and still had time for family. Now I am lucky if I can spend a couple of hr.s building and now my other pastime is looking at Forums. It would'nt be so bad but I am retired. Still having fun in a slow way.

Ian, and all others...

I usually troll across 6 or 7 sites, fairly often. One thing I find helpful is to look at the 'rooms' or 'forums' I'm interested in, and find the date of the most recent post(s). This is usually quite near the homepage, or one level deeper into the site.

Anything before I last checked, and I move on. I'd seen it.

Some times of year, or special events, bring a slew of new posts, and the subject matter generally calls for putting the extra minutes in.

I live on computers, write software to pay the bills. I check in 2 or 3 times a day to three CL forums and two tractor forums. Sometimes find myself browsing when I really should be doing something else but I do enjoy helping when I can and the help I receive.

Agreed to a point, The salvation for me is that you are able to simply check the new posts since last visit, and that saves tons of time for navigating to find pertinent stuff. And for me, in my development of building skills, the time I have spent on here has more than paid for itself in time saved building and figureing out howto do things. as far as print periodicals go, they get read in a different part of the house and use different time so no issue for me there.
In short, I am glad to spend the time here but Have learned to economize it effectivly, of course not many look to me for answers so that does make it easier
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!
