Need plane to match engine.

Looking for some help on selecting some planes to match some engines. Planes need to be period correct for engines.

1st engine is a Tom Lay supertigre 46.?

2nd is a stock K&B 45 green head. How about a Brodak/Palmer Thunderbird or Smoothie?

3rd is a Fox 59 short shaft. I have a Big Job for one but need another plane IE eaiser to build. Time is scarce.

How about putting the ST 46 in a Bob Whitely Derringer? That would be fun. I understand the original one had a ST 46 for power.

The ST .46 would be good in a T-Bird (either the Brodak upright early version or the '59 inverted version), or a Scarinzi "Blue Angel" (which was originally powered by a Fox .59), or the "United" (which can be converted into Champione's F-86 that won the NATS). Whitely's "Tempest" (RSM) and several other RSM kits are perfect for the .46.

The Humongus would be good with either the ST .46 or the Fox .59, another RSM kit.

For the K&B .45...you know it was the original power for the Shark 45. I wouldn't do that! I kinda hate to suggest a Jamison, lest Uncle Mikey jump my chit, but maybe another OTS model of about 550 sq. in. would be good. The Smoothie and "Original" Nobler fit that bill, and there's only a 5 point penalty now for the flaps.  Steve

Stiletto 660 builtup might be a good choice for the ST 46 (660 sq. in.)

The Fox 59 is a great engine for a Viking. I fly mine with an APC 13-4 wide blade, and it works great.

Hi Curtis,

The ST .46 will power any of the larger Classic planes quite nicely.  Many ships in the late '70s - early '80s were designed for the ST .46.

The K&B Torpedo (Green Head) .45 would be nice in a Rayette. (and the aforementioned Classic planes).  Exhaust stack coming out the "wrong side" and a suitable muffler will be a bit tougher than normal.

Fox .59 = Scarinzi Blue Angel.  That's what the original used or a Stunt Wagon 60 like Walter mentioned. (it's what Charlie Reeves has switched to in his Big Job, also)

I would recommend anyone considering a Torp K&B 45 green head to run it first on the test bench and note how much it shakes!  In that size, the OS 40 or 46 LA, would be a wiser choice.

3 Fox 59's - Big Job / Viking / Blue Angel

2 K&B 45's - Thunderbird upright / Smoothie ARC

2 Supertigre 46's - Derringer / Vector ARC

This ought to give me a taste of the good old days that I did not get to try. Cars, street racing and girls you know were more fun then. Most of my flying has been done with more modern engines and planes.

When these are done I will look at some of the other planes.

Oh Yeah Andy; The Fox 59's are kind of ear splitting, but they sound so sweet in the air. I have flown at some fields where there was a building near by, and when the plane goes by it, it makes a very loud crack noise. Kind of cool. Andersons are about the same. Super Cykes are the loudest of the three in my book, and if you run gasoline in them they are extra loud. Between the Harley with drag pipes, and all the models I have flown, it's no wonder I need a hearing aid. LOL. My Wife says I just have selective hearing.

I have noticed that when I hold for Jim Lee, the glow plug engine is much quieter than when he runs the ignition setup.  Yeah they say my hearing loss was from model engines.   I say it was the industrial plants I worked in.   Nothing like the sound of an injection molding machine or a printing press running full tilt.  Aint going to mention the open exhaust on race cars.

The Greenhead Torp would go well in a Musciano Stunt Rocket. Its a bit of a building job, but not hard and a lot of fun. It also looks great (IMHO), and it isn't a Jameson, Humongous, etc....

Wasn't that the K&B that had a disc behind the conrod to balance it?

The K&B .45 I have does have the balance disc.  You can tell by the rod that sticks out of the back plate,  It didn't take long for K&B to add that to the .45 since it shook so much.

Even the extra balance wheel didn't help much.  I even took mine apart several times because I thought something inside was broken!  It just vibrates, and nothing I know of can fix it. The K&B 45 is a strong engine, but be sure the front end of your plane is rigid!

The Sig Chipmunk and the Super Tigre 46 make a mighty fine conbination.  There are some people on this board who were very successful with this pair when they were somewhat younger, like juniors and seniors........won't mention any names.....they might chime in here with their experiences.
