Title: Tongue muffler for K&B 40
Post by: Dennis Toth on April 21, 2014, 06:27:28 AM
Guys,
Am getting a ship ready to get in the air with a K&B 40 for power. I am looking for a tongue muffler that will fit it. The muffler bolts are 1 1/4" apart. Any suggestions for suppliers?

Might check the noted suppliers like MECOA  and RSM MFG.

Dennis,

The muffler mounting hole dimension is the same as a os 35 s.. I know Brodak has a nice tube muffler by big art, might have a tongue muffler too.

I flew a lot in the 90's with the k & b 40, great motor if set up right .

Which K&B 40 are you talking about 4011, 4050?

On my K&B I have found that an OS 20/25 FP or LA size muffler fits.  Can verify tonight.  If so I have some available.  Send me either a PM or email.

It is the 4011, I think the OS FP25 muffler fits. Should work better for now then the boat anchor that they came with. I'll check the outlet size and might have to adjust a bit.

I sawed the connector off a K&B muffler and intended to make a tongue muffler out of it.  I ended up running the stock muffler because I build tail heavy airplanes. D>K

The Hobby Fasteners tongue mufflers from RSM are the nicest, and lightest, you'll find. y1

Guys,
I flew the K&B 40 with the OS FP25 muffler today. Worked great. The motor was set up with a 0.275" venturi and K&B NVA (I found a few a years back, seem fine I use a piece of fuel tubing to seal the body to the spraybar), all else is stock 4011. Used 7% nitro, 26% oil 40/60 (C/S) fuel with an Enya #3 plug. Prop was a narrow blade 11x5, launched at around 9700 rpm. It was very strong, easy to start (pulled it through twice, 3 flips forward, 3 flips backward, attach battery spinner flip and go). The ship is a 42 1/2oz biplane about 600 sq in. Flew strong solid right on the 4-2 point and it stayed. Eric Rule is sending a tongue muffler that fits the OS FP25 with the 1 1/4" hole spacing, could save another 1 1/2oz. We'll see once it gets here.
