Tom Niebuhr's kits & help
« on: May 08, 2020, 03:14:58 PM »
Hi Guys,

As most may know that before Tom Niebuhr passed Tom asked me to continue his kit line; in addition to his kit line I also want to make a
memorial page for Tom Niebuhr on my website, so I am asking anyone that knew Tom and would like to share a short stories of your
memories of Tom that will be published to that page.

Any and all pictures you have will also be accepted and added to the memorial page. Please send to: builtrightflyright@builtrightflyright.com

.
Thank you and God Bless
Walter

I only knew Tom from having met him in passing when I first got back into the Dallas club a few years back.  Through Mike Scott, I came into possession of the last Top Hat wing that Tom built but never finished.  I was going to build the full plane from plans I acquired but elected instead to modernize the design a bit.
Best flying plane I have ever flown but it was short lived.  It was vaporized when my house burned in January.  I plan to rebuild it when I get my shop back this fall.

Is the Top Hat one of the designs you are kitting?

I ran across one of Tom's published designs last night - the "Scorpion" (as I recall) for Combat.  I would not have associated Tom with Combat, it was an eye-opener.  Although I was tempted many times to purchase his "Wow" kit to remember a great friend and flying buddy from my high school days (who fortunately is still alive).

Do you offer the Wow Walter?

I hope you kit his Melton Roadrunner.  Tom’s kit design had a clever landing gear mounting scheme.   I hope you emulate the LG design

It appears that Tom's designs are in GOOD hands. Unfortunately, I have no stories to add, other than that I have his "Roadrunner" kit and enjoyed talking with him about planes and his business a couple times.

I'd like to see the Roadrunner kitted too.

Fellow's that have built the Roadrunner what engine would you use/recommend in it?  I built one from the M A N article in late '69 early '70 using a Nobler wing powered by a Fox 35, the lines were a full 60' and were too long, 58' would have been better..

Tom was never shy about talking on the phone, especially when there's plenty to talk about. And we talk many times.

I'm late in Posting because I was looking for Tom's great bi-plane stunter. It was a while ago and I cannot find the photo.

Interesting because I had the photo before Tom told me it was his design.

When I asked him about paint, obviously, he said no paint, it was all iron on. I have to say, from the photo you couldn't tell the difference. A shocker.

What I remember about Tom's bipe was the color combination, I believe white, green and yellow, really busy but it worked. wings were a tad thick for a bipe, but I know nothing about stunt bi-planes.

I'll still spend time looking for that photo. Possibly someone has it?

Tom was a great guy to talk to, he had a good understanding of just about everything involved with CL.

Hi guys,

Tom asked me back when I lived in Florida and he sent me the first of 3 of his models and while I didn't actually make but one
I have been offering the Roadrunner and Profile Roadrunner since then. I have offered the Hobo also but needed to convert
his files so I could use them. What I mean by that is he used Corel and I use AutoCAD, so that and us selling our home to get
ready for my move to Alabama was the main hold ups for me getting them ready, but now that I am working with Tom's daughter
Jennifer I have the rest of his files, so I should be able to make them.

You wanted pictures. She just told me, that you and her are already working on it. If you didn't know, Jennifer is also an accomplished artist. Tom's Son is also a really nice chap. He is an Ex CL stunt flyer by the way.

Yes she gave me her website for her artwork.
While I am by no means an art critic I was a professional art mover and packer back in my early days so I have seen a lot of mega $$ works of art and hers are very nice.

I agree about her brother's flying, if I remember correctly, he kicked my tail a few times back when I was flying Jr/Sr.
