Tom Neibhur's Plans - JD Falcon

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone know what has happened to the designs that Tom Neibhur created before he passed away, and in particular the JD Falcon.

I vaguely recall they were picked up by Eric Rule, but I'm not sure what's going on there either.

Anyone have any ideas?

I would think plans for the JD Falcon could be found.  However Tom didn't design it- John D'Octavio (JD) did.  They were published in an old American Modeller or Model Airplane News,  can't remember which.

If memory serves the "Top Hat" was Tom's last major design.  I "inherited" a wing that he was working on when he passed through Mike Scott and it dimensionally matched the Top Hat.  I am pretty sure the JD Falcon was not his.

I just confirmed with Mike that the "Top Hat" was Tom's last plane, and this may have been his last wing which I used in Endgame I.  I took quite a few cosmetic liberties and changed the stab airfoil to my favorite, but this plane effectively is the last "Top Hat".

     As already posted, the plan is on the Outerzone site, and it also has the original M.A.N. article plus a review of Tom's Blue Sky Models kit that was published in Flying Models magazine. John D'Ottavio had already moved to Texas from New Jersey by that time I think and may have helped production of the kit along. There is a lot of lumber in that airplane, so wood selection is important I think.

One needs to simplify these types of models or they weigh a ton. Like Dan says this one is designed with a bunch of lumber . These old designs have too sharp of leading edges too, so round those leading edges off. It’s pretty small with a little tail so 40 oz is your goal.

Tom supplied the Falcon kit with superb contest-grade wood. IIRC, his plan included some changes for accuracy to the original design.
I have a kit available if anyone may be interested.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm aware that the Falcon was designed by John D'Ottavio - hence the JD.

Apparently Tom found a number of discrepancies with the MAN plan, and revised it as per John's original wing rib templates and dimensions taken off the the F86 (which is a Falcon in disguise).

I already have the plan for the MAN version, but I really don't see much point in building it if it's "wrong" - or more to the point not representative of JD's original.

   Hi Walt!! good to hear from you!! Thanks for checking in!! Can you shed any light on how close your plans were to the M.A.N. plan? I'm just curious and I'm sure others are. It wouldn't be the only airplane that the magazine draftsman made some changes on, sometimes just to get it all on one sheet and page in the magazine!

 I did not have anything to do with the making of Tom N's plans, so I am sorry I can not answer that other that to say like me, Tom was a stickler for accuracy that's one of the reasons I agreed to take them.
