Tom Dixon's kits
« on: June 29, 2012, 02:30:28 AM »
Hello Gentlemen,
A fellow modeler (who's not registered in this forum) is planning his next project.
He wants to build the "KA-10" (Anatoly Kolesnikov's design) from a kit and, as far as I know, Mr. Tom Dixon is the only one who is currently producing this (laser cut) kit.
Since he has to import the kit from the US to Argentina (which is a serious financial effort for us down here) he would like to have some info about the overall quality of the kit before purchasing.

Any info you guys can share concerning Mr. Dixon's kits, will be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Claudio.

Hi Claudio,

All the kits I have seen from Tom have been very good.  One comment on the KA 10.... I researched this model quite a bit last year.  In the original article Tom did for Model Aviation he called it the World Champion plane.  He was slightly off on that one.  The KA 8 won the WC.  It is a decent representation of the actual KA 10 and is an excellent flier.  I will be building one from a short kit I had cut by Lazer Works/Eddie Taylor.  He is listed in the Vendors Corner as Action Hobbies.  I was not aware of Tom's kit at the time.  I probably would have bought Tom's kit had I known of it.

Hi Claudio

I have some info on the KA8 and KA10 I will post here for you.  I also have the article that Tom Dixon wrote of Model Aviation on the KA10 if you would like that too.  I did a lot of research and wanted to Kit the KA8 but it just didn't work out.  Here is what I have on them.  The second attached file did not post a picture but it will if you will click on it.  Don't know why it didn't show up like the other two.

KA8 is the first picture

KA10 is second picture.   KA8 is the one I wanted to kit.

Hi Mike,

As you know, the KA 8 is the actual plane that Mr. Kolenekov won the World Championship with, not the KA 10 as the article says.  I have some plans from Russia which are of the KA 8, IIRC.  I am not going to modify what I have to make it a KA 8.  I'll just build it as Tom drew it (KA 10) which is a decent representation.

What fell through on the KA 8 kit?  I am pretty sure Mr. Kolesnekov is still alive and would probably be very ope To having it kitted.  I would love to see a true[/b] kit of either one made.

Turns out the Dixon kit up in the attic is a Gieske Nobler.
I had bought the KA-10 plan only from Dixon some time back and that is what I was thinking about.

Hello Bill,
Indeed, the KA-8 was the one which won the 1986 WC. In fact, I've been there as a team member.
The guy on the left you see in the pic, it's me (I have the sensation that the Earth was still hot back then... ;D!)
Thanks a bunch for your input!

Hi Mike,
Yes, please, send me the article from MA. It'll be very useful.
I will send to all this info to my friend.
Thanks a lot for your help.

PS: The second file you attached didn't show up because it's a .pdf file. Only with .jpeg files you'll see the thumbnails.

My KA 10 built from a Tom Dixon kit several years ago.  Good quality foam wing with cap strips to simulate ribs.  Light wood.  Flies very well with a PA61 SE.

Bill it is kind of a long story but I was communicating with a Russian who is a flying buddy of Kolesnekov who was translating and relaying messages for me and somehow == because of the language barrier things got miscommunicated and complicated and I just said the heck with it.  I did not want to kit the KA10, I wanted to kit the KA8...but now all i really want to do is just build one for myself but I cannot find plans anywhere for the KA8.
