Jim Pollock's Intrepid XL Information
« on: February 22, 2025, 07:46:10 AM »
I recently purchased an Intrepid XL with District 5, Huntsville Alabama, and Jim Pollock decals on the plane.  Also 2000 & 2003 AMA decals.  I acquired it through an estate auction in Greeneville TN without an engine and with the rear fuselage section of the rudder & elevator broken and repaired but not finished, new wood installed but not finished on the bottom of the fuselage from the landing gear rearward 16" long and a new cowl piece / engine cover 90% completed.  I think it might have had a rear exhaust engine but am not sure.  This is/was a very well finished airplane with a lot of cockpit & finish detail so I am trying to save it.  If this is possible, it will be by far the nicest plane I have every had and is well beyond my building and finishing skills.
The question I have is does anyone remember this plane and what engine was in it?  I have been unable to match the mounting pattern despite help from both Michael Jennings and Randy Smith.  The closest I have found is an O&S Max - 46FX.  Measuring the bolt pattern in the plane is a little sketchy but I think it is 18mm CL hole to CL hole on the mounting lug, 43.5mm CL to CL across the crankcase, and 51.29mm from the CL of the front hole to the front of the plane.  The inside dimension of the mounting beams has been widened to 35.6mm and the maximum engine width that will fit across the mounting lugs is 54mm.
Any help identifying what engine I need to buy to complete this restoration would be appreciated.  Thanks Jay

Jim was a charter member of our club here in Huntsville,  I don't remember that model..but try an ST .60.  Last I heard, Jim was living over in eastern AL.

The OS .40VF gets pretty close to those numbers.

Dave

The .40VF numbers are 17.5mm bolt spacing fore/aft; 44mm bolt spacing laterally; 35mm case width; 51.6mm front mtg hole to prop face; 51mm overall width. All according to the OS data sheet.

As I recall the history, it probably had Ted Fancher's former 46VF, which he sold to Jim after he switched (in the middle of the NATs) to the PA61. That particular engine was a Randy 46VF AAC and had won the 1995 NATs.

For clarity: the .40VF and .46VF have the same mounting dimensions. Not sure if the pipe or muffler dimensions would be the same.

From the initial post, the description almost sounds like whoever was doing the prior repairs might have been reconfiguring from a pipe to something else?

Everything is the same on the outside, except for the 40 or 46 on the casting. They actually run differently and not surprisingly, the 46 has a fair bit more power.  Stock, I preferred the 40, but you could run the 46 dropping into a 4-stroke with a *remarkably smooth* 4-2 break, like butter-smooth.  Ted and David ran the Randy AAC piston/liner to save weight, but I have no idea if there was anything else different about it.

I may have been the first, or at least, one of the first, to run the 46 in a stunt plane (testing it for Ted) but at the time I had no acceptable props for it. Ted solved that problem by going to a Bolly 12-4 depitched all the way down to 3.25, at astronomical RPM. Incredibly noisy and annoying but also very capable of running 5.5+ laps on some rather porky airplanes with the ultimate in airspeed regulation, it absolutely never did anything unexpected.

I appreciate everyone's input very much.  I have been able to find information on-line for the OS 46 FX which appears to side muffler and the same mounting dimensions as the OS 46 VF. I have not been able to find anything on-line for the OS 46 VF though, is this a rear pipe engine?
I will look around at the classified sites but if any of you know who might have a control line ready OS 46 FX for sale, I would be interested in buying it.
