Monokote Trim Iron
« on: September 29, 2023, 05:51:20 PM »
Does anybody know of a good alternative to the Hangar 9 trim iron?  I have had 3 and they all stopped working well almost immediately.  Similar with the Top Flight which I think is the same iron.
Don't need the big one, only the little one.

If it is not broke you are not trying hard enough.

I have never used one, as I fond them mostly useless. I think the best iron I ever used was the one from Black Baron what ever the other iron on film company was. Their iron was one that had special shaped nose on it for getting into tight places or fillets, and was Teflon treated I think. The Top Flite trim iron is only useful to cut the cord off so you can use the wire and/or plug on something else!
  Type at you later,

How about trying a Yihua 60w soldering station (unless a more reliable brand has been discovered) with digital temp control $40+/- as they are good from approx 200°F to 900°F and Moneykote wants in the vicinity of 300°F.

Maybe adapt one of your existing trim iron tips to the soldering iron for a bigger / cooler footprint.

50% of my method of covering is based on using the trim iron, this way the finished plane hardly show any sign of of the glue joints. i have 2 on use for ages, and i polish the shoe to avoid scratches.
