Serendipity twice on same model
« on: October 10, 2017, 12:41:59 PM »
Ever build a model from plans as no kit was available?  But building take place over a two year period?  I am in the process of finally finishing my 1962 Ares. I've built several of the Ambroid (58) version. a few 59's and a super Ares, USA-1 and a Geo XL.  The Juno is still in the box.  I like Billy's models.

When I did the turtle deck, some how it came out a tad low in front, so the Ares canopy just looked silly sitting at that angle. In desperation I looked through my canopy box and found a Super Chipmunk canopy that fit perfect. Wow, so now it has that canopy. It's still a 62 Ares, just looks, oh, different.  LL~
When I decided to use a grooved maple mount for the landing gear vs bolting it to the main spar, I was pleased with the result. Gear fit perfectly.  But 3 months later, I'm ready to paint and noticed the gear looked odd some how. Seems I really screwed up on this one. I placed the gear mount BEHIND the main spar, not in front. Thus any and all take offs would end up in the nose, forget any landings..
How in heck do I fix this???   Well, it's all or nothing. I cut away what I could, then took a duck bill pliers , grabbed the  mount and bent it back and forth and bingo,it popped off the spar. Did the same on both. Talk about lucky. Now the gear is mounted properly and it is sitting there in all over white base. Thus serendipity twice. Lets hope that's it.  H^^ y1 #^ Hey, no one's perfect.

Are we having a little brain fade in our later years?    Wait until you get ready to solder the tail wheel on a plane and discover you for got the tail wheel gear, no block or wire.

I spend as much or more time scouring these forums for info when I am on a project... you would think that I could avoid ALL the potential screw ups

No Not me..I can find ever more inventive ways to do something wrong.... I just recently covered an entire wing and was so proud I got the tips wrinkle free... then noticed the new pretty weight box sitting on the board... DOH!

Ha
Glad to know I’m not the only one who makes mistakes like this🤡
I’m a pretty fair builder and have been building for more than fourty years.
A couple of weeks ago, I was ready to paint my Top Flite Peacemaker.
I always paint my flaps and elevators separately so as to get proper coverage and make it easier to rub out after painting.
As I was making the final fits, it hit me like a brick to my head.
I HAD THE FLAPS BACKWARDS!!!
How lame. I made the inboard flap longer than the outboard flap
At least I can still fix it before painting
I suck

Larry, do you mean this model has a longer outboard panel than inboard panel? In which case the outboard flap would be longer? I bet you mean the other way around.

And, What B'sYU said, you do not suck.

No Mike, the inboard flap is longer than the outboard flap. Opposite of what we want in a stunt ship
How this got by me after all these years of building stunt ships is beyond me.
Maybe I should lay off the Jack Daniels while building😁.

Ty:

How about a picture?  It would be interesting  to see how that canopy changes its looks.

And next time, leave the gear like that.  Just add a nose wheel: an Ares with tricycle gear!  New and different!

From the side-view it's sorta like "if you stick a Chipmunk canopy on anything, it turns it into a Chipmunk."  Hmmmmm..... ???

Hmmm. Do you think maybe the Chipmunk was a normal winged  (non i-beam) Ares??

I don't know about that, but apparently the Chipmunk is highly contagious.  Almost like the Borg.  I think that your Ares has been assimilated!  ;D
